First Daughters and the Law

Was Chelsea Clinton better behaved than the Bush girls, or was the press kinder to her? Were there any news accounts of Chelsea getting into trouble?

Probably a little of both.

Remember, Chelsea was around 12 or so when she and her parents moved into the White House. I'm sure her parents made it clear to her on a daily basis that the entire nation was watching her every move and that she was to be on her best behavior.

Unlike her father.

Also, if she's anything like her mother (and all indicators seem to suggest that she is), then she's a fanatical liberal who takes herself deathly seriously and thus doesn't have time for the silliness that accompanies most young women's first years or so of college.

I know of no news accounts of Chelsea getting into trouble. The only thing I remember that even comes close was a report that she had checked herself into the campus health center after she broke up with her boyfriend. She was probably just depressed, and the press largely left the story alone.

Bush Sr. - Son Neil ran into some trouble with his S&L
Reagan - Not really trouble but a personal choice, she posed for playboy. As I recall, not bad.
Carter - Late 70s, Chip had to be doing some stuff, but I was too young to remember.
Ford, Nixon, Johnson don't know
Kennedy - way to young to make trouble, well, important trouble.
Eisenhower, Truman, Roosevelt, etc. I don't know either, hey I'm only 26. Although it's also press, before Nixon family was basically left alone, and even after that it was unless major.

W. Bush is our first President ever arrested in his lifetime. Maybe his daughter will be the first first-daughter to have that distinction too?

Chelsea was a good girl, her first uncle however was not, didn't whatshisname get into trouble a couple of times? Roger Clinton.

According to the news this morning, Jenna was caught trying to buy beer with a fake ID.

Excuse me? You're the President's daughter and you try to use a FAKE ID?

I need not make any derogatory comments here. The action speaks for itself.

The news report said that the manager called 911 to report it. I don't consider a fake ID to be an emergency. It sounds like they were trying to make news.

Actually, it is a felony in the state of Texas to use a fake ID. Also, she just got busted for Minor in possesion just a few weeks back.

Anyone know the appropriate laws in Texas? The store owner, rather than over-reacting, may have been meeting the legal requirement to keep himself out of trouble.

I often dine at the restaurant the Bush girls were seen at. It's a great place and I heartily reccommend it.

Anyway, the restaurant is a popular spot for college kids, South Austin hippies, downtown business-people, politicians, and assorted other folks. Prominently displayed above the bar are signs indicating that they will, under no circumstances, serve alcohol to underaged patrons. They are quite clear without being rude.

In addition, Austin police and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) have been seriously cracking down on underage drinking in Austin. They go after the drinkers themselves and the BAR OWNERS. While calling 911 may have been extreme, the bar owner may have been simply trying to impress law enforcement that he will follow the law. The use of a fake ID aggrevates the situation. Attempting to use someone else's Texas ID card (or driver liscense) for fraudulent purposes is a crime in Texas. The mere possession of an altered Texas ID is, I believe, a class B misdemeanor.

Personally, I don't think the restaurant was only trying to make news (though it clearly did). They were trying to demonstrate that they would follow the law regardless of who comes in the bar.

As far as a celebrity using a fake ID -- I can't imagine what she was thinking. Duh. Since the girls have armed (and heavily armed, at that) escorts, maybe the can't slip down to Mexico like every other underaged college kid in Texas.

Jenna was already on probation and ordered to alcohol counseling and community service for her previous nolo condere plea for MIP.

In re-reading my post, I wanted to make clear that I am not, in any way, criticizing our southern neighbors. I simply know that many college students go to Mexico for drinking purposes. I have gone to Mexico myself many times (for other-than-partying reasons) and have enjoyed the visits. The border region has many attractions for American visitors.

Thats exactly what they were doing. Texas has some very strict laws, and the bar I worked in we absolutely called the cops anytime someone used a fake ID. We even detained them, and handcuffed them if neccesary.

I haven't seen this news reported on TV (maybe Fox News or CNN has more info than I have read on the net) but my impression was that Jenna was at a table with someone who used a fake ID to try to buy alcohol - maybe for her too - then everyone at the table was ticketed. I don't think she had a fake ID herself. Can anyone clarify that? Still, something doesn't quite make sense...

I THINK, but I'm not sure if I remember this right, that Amy Carter spent a night in jail for a protest of some sort or another. It wasn't a big deal thing-a peaceful sitin or such.

IIRC, Amy Carter's night in jail was in college...after Jimmy-Dad was no longer Prez. Not quite the same as underage drinking, IMO.

The question is...is she just stupid, considering the events from a few weeks ago (not to mention the boyfriend picked up for public intoxication who was bailed out by the Secret Service) or is she a spoiled rich bitch who thinks she can get away with a slap on the wrist?

I heard that it was a margarita, not beer, that she was attempting to buy via the false ID.

I'm listening to the Diane Reem show on NPR and this is one of their topics even as I write this. They said that there are witnessed accounts of Chelsea Clinton smoking cigarettes a time or two. Now, while not illegal, it didn't look good when her mom is leading a huge anti-smoking campaign. Personally, this was the first I'd heard of this.

So far as the Bush girls go, I think that they are behaving like most college freshmen I knew. I was good and didn't start drinking till I was 23, but I knew plenty (probably the majority) of people who started drinking in HS and once they were in college and away from their parents, they started drinking with a vengance. Should they realize there will be increased scrutiny on them since they are W's daughters? Sure. But, if they were just Jo Blow's kids, no one would even bat an eye.

I would not give them any grief over the drinking; that's between them and the State of Texas and their parents.

I would certainly make the observation that Jenna seems to be a few greens short of a salad, however. After making numerous public appearnces with her father, last summer, she gets her face plastered all over the TV when she had the Secret Service spring her boyfriend from jail. Within weeks, she has her face splashed all over the TV again, for her own drinking foibles divided between the day she was caught and the day she was sentenced.
Now she walks into a place in the state where her father was governor and tries to get alcohol illegally?

Exactly. It has nothing to do with slamming a person for trying to buy beer -- or margaritas as the case may be -- per se. Don't most people try it (or look on while others try it) at some point when they are underage? The point is the unbelievable stupidity of using a FAKE ID in a nation where her father is president, a state where her father was governor, and after she has been subjected to national television media scrutiny for illegal activities relating to alchohol.
