Warning: the following is written in a sleep-deprived and inebriated state. If it fails to make sense then feel free to make up your own interpetation and call it avant garde poetry.

Just want to share with you all the joy that I (and a couple of hundred thousand other Brisbanites*) experienced over the weekend. What momentous occasion is this you ask? Well on Saturday the Brisbane Lions won the 2001 Australian Rules Premiership.

What's special about this is the fact that 10 years ago (heck even fie years ago) Aussie Rules was almost a joke in this state which was dominated by the two rugby codes during the winter football season.

In US terms it'd be like a franchise team from a state that barely played the sport, let alone well historically, winning the Superbowl.

But the 2001 Lions are a great side. They withstood and then over-ran an Essendon side widely-touted in Melbourne as one of the best teams ever (when you think Essendon, think of baseball's New York Yankees - rich, succesful, arrogant and you either love them or hate them). The Lions came back from a 20 point deficit just before half-time and in the end almost casually held off the Essendon side who threw several display rooms of kitchen sinks at the Queensland team.

Go you good things!!!!!!

Ack! It's 9am here and I've just stumbled home. Work in a few hours? *sigh*

Very happy for you dpr!

As a footie-blind person myself I was touched by the Lions' determination to honour their Fitzroy origins, and the celebration at the old, wistful, slightly run-down oval in the Edinburgh Gardens.

Somehow I doubt that the Sydney Swans would be popping down to South Melbourne if they ever won.

Congratulations, you drunken yobbo, you!

Well, I still don't quite get the difference between Australian Rules and Rugby, but it sounds good nonetheless.

Now go get some sleep, dpr.

Gah! See what happens when I get caught up in my own petty stuff? Missed this thread by a mile.

As a hoodie-wearing American, I have only one thing to say:

It's all thanks to Alistair.

Jesus crack-smokin' carpenter christ. Even I'm not so depressed I can't lust after the perfection that is Alistair Lynch.

In a thread long, long ago on these boards, I unofficially tipped Brisbane to win the Grand Final this year. I'm glad someone's knocked Essendon off ... but why couldn't it have been Collingwood?

Ah well. Next year, the Premiership's ours.

Ours!

mwahahahahahahaha

Unfortunately you are wrong. For you see next year is the year of the Swan. Mark (pun not intended) my words!

thinksnow, it's pretty simple. Just look at the goals; four upright sticks, Australian Rules. Two upright sticks with a crossbar, either Rugby Union or Rugby League.

To further differentiate, Australian Rules is a uniquely Australian game, played at high speed by over-muscled track athletes, whereas Rubgy Union is English and is played by reasonably fast-moving, reasonably-skilled athletes. Rugby League is a direct descendant of Rugby Union and is played by gorillas

Take that last one as a good-natured jibe; I grew up in league turf, and am still mourning the loss suffered by my beloved Sharkies

Oh, and Kayeby? No chance.
