While reading the April 19, 1996 column, I noticed that Cecil didn't mention one of the main reasons why premarital blood testing is still required. As a bride-to-be several years ago in Nebraska, I had to take a premarital blood test to determine that I had an immunity to rubella (German measles). Even though I had my immunization (and the records to prove it!) I still had to do this! Apparently if you catch rubella while pregnant it can seriously harm the fetus. Men (in this state, anyway) don't have to be tested for anything, which strikes me as somewhat unfair.
