Steam 5 day black friday sale

This isn't as big as the Christmas sale will be, but it's big enough to warrant its own thread, especially since the unusual format this year will probably allow us to do a few group buys and we can use this thread to coordinate it.

Steam is having what they're calling the "give and get" sale. The "get" part is that 30 accounts per day get the top 5 games on their wishlist randomly. The "gift" part is that they're selling "gift packs" for games where you can pick up 5-10 copies of a game for cheap and then gift them to your friends. This is alongside lots of different daily sales every day, although they aren't discounting the entire catalog like they typically do at Christmas.

Today's (Wednesday) daily sales:

Borderlands $10
Deus Ex Collection $5
Prototype $15
Alpha Protocol $7.50
Sam & Max: The Devils Playhouse (5 episodes) $10.50
Indie Energy Pack (Quantz, Galcon Fusion, Protogalaxy, Brainpipe: A Plunge to Unhumanity, Gridrunner revolution) $5
R.U.S.E. $33.50
Counter-Strike: Source $5
Shank $10

And the gift pack deals:

Deus Ex: Game of the Year, 8 copies for $12 ($1.50 each, 83% off)
Borderlands: 6 copies for $40 ($6.60 each, 66% off)
Half-life 2: 10 games for $20 ($2 each, 77% off)
R.U.S.E.: $150 for 6 games ($25 each, 50% off)

We can coordinate group buys if there's interest - one person buys the game, gifts it to everyone else, and they send their share in via paypal to the purchaser. I already have the first 3 games and I won't be buying RUSE at a high price so I won't be coordinating any of these games for a group buy, but someone else can if they want. I'll see what tomorrow brings.

Thought I'd mention too that impulse is having a sale for thanksgiving too. Most notably dragon age ultimate edition for $25 is a good deal (game, expansion, all DLC).

Works fine for me. The only time the website gets really bogged down is when they announce the new deals (10am pacific) and 5-10 million people are all hammering away trying to get them at the earliest possible time.

Heh I started to copy the day 2 sale but realised everything would be in pounds which wouldn't mean much to most dopers.

If you don't have Defense Grid buy it (unless you hate tower defense or fun for a great price). Also the Indie Pack looks really good.

I'm always tempted by Left for Dead 2 but I don't think I'd play it much considering how little I play against/with other people online. Plus I doubt 5 other people would go in on it.

The Indie pack for $5 includes Recettear, which is worth the $20 price tag it normally carries all by itself. I hear Gish is pretty fun, too.

Day 2

Eve Online: Tyrannis $5
Defense Grid: The Awakening $2.50
Cities XL 2011 $30
Deathspank $10
Indie Story Pack (And Yet It Moves, Gish, Jolly Rover, Puzzle Agent, Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale) $5
Audiosurf $2.50
Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY $10
Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days $5

and the gift pack deals
Defense Grid 10 pack for $15 ($1.50 each)
Audiosurf 12 pack for $20 ($1.66 each)
L4D2 6 pack for $25 ($4.16 per game)
Puzzle Quest 2 10 pack for $35 ($3.50 per game)

I won't be organizing any gift pack deals since I have everything, but if 6 of you want to get together to snag l4d2 for a crazy low price, go nuts. Just have one guy buy them and everyone else paypal him back their share.

Defense Grid is very fun, definitely worth $2.50. Same with audiosurf. I'll probably grab Batman at $10, people tell me it's great. At $1 a game, I'm probably gonna grab all these indie packs.

I found a leaked list of what gift packs and what indie packs will become available. I wasn't sure if it was a hoax until today, when it correctly predicted the deals.

Putting it in a spoiler box in case, like me, steam sales are your Christmas morning and you don't want to know all in advance :P (It doesn't list the single game daily deals - just gift packs and indie bundles)

SPOILER:

Aliens vs Predator (2010) 6-pack
- Audiosurf 12-pack
- Braid 10-pack
- Counter-Strike: Source 6-pack
- Defense Grid: The Awakening 10-pack
- Empire: Total War 6-pack
- Freedom Force 10-pack
- Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City 6-pack
- Just Cause 2 8-pack
- Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West 10-pack
- Left 4 Dead 2 6-pack
- Mount & Blade: Warband 6-pack
- Nyxquest: Kindred Spirits 10-pack
- Osmos 12-pack
- Portal 6-pack
- Puzzle Quest 2 10-pack
- Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale 8 pack
- Red Faction: Guerrilla 8-pack
- Splinter Cell: Conviction 6-pack
- Trine 8-pack
- Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising 8-pack
- World of Goo 12-pack

Also, there will be more packs of indie games similar to today's Indie Energy Pack. 5 game per pack, on massive discount, one day only. Again, I don't know the daily order these will come in, or exactly what the discount will be, but, here's what the names and contents of the packs will be:

- Indie Air Pack: Altitude, DogFighter, Flotilla, Gratuitous Space Battles, Plain Sight
- Indie Clever Pack: Doc Clock: The Toasted Sandwich of Time, Eufloria, Iron Grip: Warlord, VVVVVV, World of Goo
- Indie Pulse Pack: Audiosurf, Beat Hazard, Bit Trip Beat, The Polynomial, Rhythm Zone
- Indie Puzzle Pack: Cogs, Droplitz, Puzzle Dimension, Shatter, Tidalis
- Indie Story Pack: And Yet It Moves, Gish, Puzzle Agent, Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale, Jolly Rover

All of the indie packs are great deals, some of them incredible.

I may also, depending on price, be organizing group buys for Empire: Total War, Just Cause 2, and Mount & Blade: Warband. Tell me if you're interested, and feel free to organize your own.

Wow, usually during these sales since there are millions of people downloading their huge new games, the downloads slow down well below typical speed. But Steam is sending me Batman AA (which Kinthalis gifted to me because he is awesome) at 2.4MB/s.

I loved the idea of Recettear but the game is way too simple. It's a weak trading game melded with a weak action RPG. I really wish that the economy side of it was ten times more complex and the action part of it was cut.

I could do with less anime humour as well but that might be a big plus to people if they enjoy it. On sale it's more then worth $1 but I wouldn't pay more then $5 for it.

Well if we're starting wishlists I would go out for anyone buying the Left 4 Dead 2 pack. If 3 other people go for it I'd be willing to suck up the balance. The costs would be £2.49 per game which with the exchange rate might even be less than the US sale.

Just Cause 2 if it comes under £5 I might go for though I wouldn't be willing to be the primary buyer.

Turns out the Batman game is pretty awesome so far. I don't normally like that style of melee combat but the game makes it fun. Good blend of stealth/action/minor puzzles so far, good production values. If you like that sort of game I definitely recommend it at $10.

I also grabbed Kane & Lynch 2. It's probably crap, with a bad meta rating, but the most common complaint seemed to be the lack of content - which, in a $50 game, sucks, but for $5 what the hell. It looks like it might satisfy the mindless shoot em in the face urge that Soldier of Fortune used to. It has multiplayer coop so it can't be all bad.

Also though it is pasted all over the Steam store if people aren't looking they have a giveaway.

Anyone with 10+ games on their wishlist will be entered into a drawing where they win the top 5 games. So make sure to fill out your wishlist.

I didn't fully read the rules so I only had 5 games for the first drawing.

Please post if you're interested in the Left 4 Dead 2 pack. I'm still hoping for 3 takers (at least).

Burnout Paradise: Ultimate Box $15
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II Gold (game + expansion) $13.60
Machinarium $5
Tropical 3 Gold $7.50
Torchlight $5
Empire Total War: $15
Arma II: Operation Arrowhead $20
Blur $15
Indie Clever Pack (Doc Clock: The Toasted Sandwich of Time, Eufloria, Iron Grip: Warlord, VVVVVV, World of Goo) $5

Ultimate Box was on sale for half that price a few month ago when I got it, so that's dissapointing. Torchlight is definitely worth $5 if you like action RPGs. I was hoping Blur and Empire TW would be about half of what they are now. Machinarium is an interesting indie game. The Indie Clever pack is definitely worth it - World of Goo is worth the $5 alone.

Gift packs:
Freedom Force 10 pack $7.50 ($0.75 per game)
Portal 6 pack for $15 ($2.50 per game)
Warhammer 40K DOW2: Chaos Rising 8 pack for $40 ($5 per game)
Empire Total War 6 pack for $60 ($10 per game)

I got Warhammer. I've been considering it for a while, and the price looks good.

I'll probably get around to playing it as soon as I'm done with Fallout NV.

A qestion about Warhammer: should I install both the game and the expansion at the same time, or should I play one and then the other?

If it's like COH (also done by relic) then go ahead and install both. The new campaigns will be listed seperately and you'll have more races to use in multiplayer. They probably use the same game executable for both, just adding content if you own the expansion, so there's nothing to lose.

I've got it for PS3, but yes, it's a pretty excellent game. One of those rare license successes you hear about.

DOWII annoys me, because I have the base game but not the expansion - I think i'll wait and see if they have the expansion for less over christmas, since i'm not all that bothered about it and there's plenty of other interesting stuff at the moment.

Anyone know anyone who's won their top 5 wishlist yet?

It hardly needs to be said, but Torchlight for 5$ is the most ridiculous awesomeness. You really have no excuse if you haven't gotten it already.

How does Batman play on a keyboard/mouse? I don't have a gamepad for my PC. I really loved the game when I had my PS3, but I don't know if it would translate well to a different control system.

Batman works amazingly with the mouse and keyboard. The design team did a really good job utilizing the strengths of those controls.

It's much easier and quicker to look around, and accurately aim at various enemies. I can go from one bad guy to the next to the next and so on with a quick flick of the wrist and a mouse press.

WAY better than using the clumsy controller, IMHO, and I tried both setups.

L4D2 obviously if you haven't gotten it by now is worth $5. It's also our most regularly played game on the SDMB Steam Community.

COD4 is the last good COD game and probably still has an active multiplayer community since lots of people reject the ass that is subsequent CODs.

The Lara Croft game looks to be a puzzle-oriented action RPG... with coop modes I might just grab it.

And the Indie Pulse Pack, like all those packs, is a great deal. Audiosurf is worth the $5 alone and Beat Hazard is pretty decent.... I haven't tried the other 3 but all beat.trip look interesting.

King's Bounty is a great game if you like tactical, turn-based fantasy wargaming. I think I have close to 130 hours played between KB: The Legend and KB: Armored Princess.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a fun, but I wouldn't recommend it as a single player game. The co-op adds a lot of depth to the game that the single player lacks. There's a lot of fun puzzles that you have to figure out together that are nerfed in single player so that you could complete them by yourself.

The game looks good with lots nice little details and runs smoothly. The combat, while simple, is lots of fun. Combat is another part where it's more fun in co-op. There are spots where one player has to keep the enemies occupied and lead them to traps that the other player then has to activate. There's a boss battle that requires cooperation to defeat that's very intense. Speaking of intense, there are a few trap rooms where you have to think quickly or you die that are really well made.

The game uses a isometric viewpoint and you can't control the camera. Your view is never blocked though. I'd recommend using a game pad as the analogue sticks gives you 360 degree movement that'll make the platforming more precise. The game's not bad with the mouse and keyboard either, but I preferred the game pad.

The game supports both online and local co-op. Haven't played online so I can't say how well it's implemented.

A really fun game and the best Lara Croft game in years. I'll give it 9 out of 10 in co-op. 8 out of 10 in single player.

They haven't released names (and they'd be pretty much random to us anyway) but they do list which games have been awarded on this page.

If you're getting King's Bounty and the expansion, consider getting Crossworlds as well. It's a rewrite/reimagining of Armored Princess with a lot of extra stash.

And that game is the true HOMMV, IMHO.

I always played it with my 360 controller. Didn't think much of it, just assumed the mouse and keyboard wouldn't be all that great for that style of game.

I think I'm going to stay with the controller though. I don't need any twitch aiming and it's easier on my wrist.

I'm actually pretty impressed with this Rhythm Zone game in the indie pulse pack. It's a guitar hero style game where you press the notes at the right time, but it takes any song you have and creates an easy/medium/hard/expert note chart based on it. I've only done a few songs but it has done a very good job of getting it right so far - the timing is perfect and what it chose to make as notes has been very good. It can't exactly follow one instrument like in guitar hero, but it does a good job of figuring out what the most prominent instrument is at that moment and charting it. So it just has a really good feel for the flow of the song. And it has per-song leaderboards like audiosurf.

With audiosurf and beat hazard being pretty good (haven't played the other two yet) I can definitely recommend the pack for $5. I mean, $1 per game people.

Yeah, I was able to configure my guitar hero guitar to play the game too, so it's basically like guitar hero except you can play any music file on your computer. The differences are that it maps whatever instrument is prominent, so not strictly a guitar/bass track, there are only 4 notes/keys on all difficulties, it doesn't go to 5 on hard+ like GH, and there's no strum function - you tap out the notes at the right time, like doing hammer ons on GH. I wonder if there's a mod somewhere to add strum functionality.

Still, very cool, and I can play some music that would never be on GH.

I'll go in on Just Cause 2, but considering how little interest there is in this thread I don't think we'll get enough people.

Ok, games today:

Indie Puzzle Pack (Cogs, Droplitz, Puzzle Dimension, Shatter, Tidalis) $5
Splinter Cell Conviction $20
World of Goo $2.50
Patrician 4 $10
Mount and Blade Complete (M&B, M&B Warband) $10
Bit.Trip Beat $5
The Ball $10
The Orange Box $7.50
Street Fighter 4 $10

Give packs/packages

Mount & Blade Warband 6 pack $35 ($5.83 per game)
Splinte Cell Conviction 6 pack $90 $15 per game
Just Cause 2 8 pack $60 ($7.50 per)
Osmos 12 pack for $20 ($1.66 per game)

You should've gotten World of Goo as part of one of the indie packs along with Bit.Trip. If you didn't, world of goo is definitely worth $2.50. Orange Box, if you somehow don't own those games by now, is one of the best deals ever. I recommend all the indie puzzle packs - at $1/game, you don't need to get much out of it and you're supporting Indie developers.

We're at about 4 people for the Warband and Just Cause 2 packs, by the way. I'm not sure when/if we'll fill up. If you don't want to wait, you can buy an individual copy of mount & blade warband for $7.50 - really, the savings of about $2 is barely worth the coordination of a group buy, or you can get the original M&B + warband for $10, which is probably the best deal. Really it's Just Cause 2 we should be focusing on, since it's not available in a single pack. But I'll still do the M&B warband pack if we get the people.

I should mention that Just Cause 2 is DX10, which means Vista/Win7 only. Does that work for you Darkhold?

I'm not too worried about getting the warband group buy - it's $7.50 alone or $5.81 as a group so it's only a $1.70 savings per game. Not bad but maybe not worth the minor paypal hassle. Plus for $2.50 more, you can get M&B and M&B: Warband, which is a better deal for people who have neither

JC2, on the other hand, isn't on individual sale so a group buy is the only option. I have 5 takers so far, we need 3 more.

No it isn't. If you have neither, just get Warband. The only thing you get with the original that you don't get with Warband is the vanilla version's campaign map (which wouldn't be on my radar of things worth paying for); Warband adds a new faction, redraws the map, and adds a few other new features. The only possible reason you'd want the vanilla version in addition to Warband is if you really hate some of the new features they added.

I'll give my endorsement for Warband. IMO $7.50 is a good deal (Steam says I've logged 78 hours of play between the two versions). Skip the original, though; it's just a slightly less complete version of Warband.

We ended up getting a group buy of warband done. We're still sitting at 5/8 for just cause 2, if you're still interested contact me. If it doesn't happen, it'll probably be on a significant sale for Christmas anyway.

A warning for warband, it seems that steam ran out of keys (or something....) so you can only play the trial for now even if you buy it.

Fortunately the trial lets you play to level 7 which is a pretty long time, and it will hopefully be resolved before anyone gets that far.

Seems like a really fun game so far, though. I suggest you check the difficulty in the options and maybe bump it up a little - it defaults to really, really easy settings and never mentions you can (and probably should) change that.

Ok, last day of sales I think

Metro 2033 $10
Indie Air Pack (altitude, dogfighter, flotilla, gratuitous space battles, plain sight) $5
Monkey Island 2 Special Edition $2.50
Peggle Deluxe $5
Star Wars KOTOR $2.50
Dirt 2 $5
Aliens vs Predator $6.80
Mafia 2 $37.50
Beat Hazard $2.50

Gift packs
Trine 8 pack $20 ($2.50 per)
AVP 6 pack $30 ($5 per)
World of Goo 12 pack $20 ($1.66 per)
Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West 10 pack $20 ($2 per)

Lots of good stuff today. You filthy bastards who don't have dirt 2 by now should get it for $5. Most fun racing game ever and we just started having regular SDMB games again. I get a lot of "blah racing games" from people but I wasn't that into racing games either before I got dirt 2 and had a blast anyway. We play with a few people who are all "bah humbug!" towards racing games and play dirt 2 anyway. As long as you have some sort of analog controller - gamepad, wheel, joystick, whammy bar on a guitar hero controller! something! you'll probably have fun with it. You could play with the keyboard of course but... blah. Anyway, we've been getting a weekly game together and having fun with it, so join us.

That indie pack is a great deal, with at least 3 of those games (altitude, dogfighter, GSB) being worth the $5 by themselves.

KOTOR I haven't gotten around to playing yet but people seem to love it. The monkey island game is one of the remakes telltale did and is priced well there.

I'll do a 6 pack of AVP if people are interested - we'd only be saving $1.80 per person but if we're all gonna get it anyway we might as well save. I'll be gone until later but contact me if you're interested.

I forgot the package deals. I like Lead and Gold a lot, it's a lot of fun - if you can somehow organize 10 people, it's easily worth $2 per - or just splurge and gift it around to random people if you want, that's what I did with an osmos pack yesterday.

Same for Trine and World of Goo - all of those games are good - grab a pack for $20 and pass them around to your friends. It's a pretty cost effective way to make people happy.

I ended up grabbing Dirt 2 after all; couldn't say no to it at that price.

KOTOR is pretty good. I've already got it, but I'd recommend it for anyone who likes a good (fairly railroaded) RPG.
