Ditto. I still get carded, and one friend still says I have a baby-face, while a client of mine was astonished that I wasn't in my mid-30s (hopefully because of my demeanor and professionalism, and not my appearance.)
Nothing wrong with being mid-30s, I just want to look my age ;D |

I am 20. I'm surprised how few people are in my age group. I started lurking on the board the summer before I started high school, so I guess I was 14, but I didn't sign up until the board went free to post. I'm kind of amazed that I've been reading the SDMB for six years.

I had no idea that 41-50 would be in the majority. I'm used to board with a younger demographic.
That said, I'm in my twenties...23 to be exact. |

No, a majority would be more than 50%. When it's more than the others but less than 50%, that's called a "plurality."

I guess technically the poll doesn't automatically mean there are more people of a certain age group anyway.

I'm 40 years, 5 months. I was born at the end of December. My father, being a CPA, was joked about at the office saying that he induced labor to deduct me.

So the poll shows that most of us Dopers (who take polls!) are between the ages of 30 and 50. That is not old no matter how you slice and dice it. We are a mature group, I suppose, but not old!

Back in the middle of the last century I would have thought it was old: but now, about 60 years later, my opinions have mellowed a bit.

I'm probably going to get jumped on, but I would guess that the largest age bracket for a general topic inernet forum is not normally the 40-50 age bracket. No, I don't have a cite onhand.

You know, I was going to say something about all the youngins who've spent a quarter of their lives here, and then I did the math. I've been here for about 22% of my life.
![]() So far the poll skews as I expected, though -- mostly 30s and 40s. (I am 30-something.) |

That's why I said we're mature, but 40 or 50 is not old, I'm sorry to say. It's just middle-aged.

Back at post #17, jjimm speculated that dopers would be a year older than they were in my poll of a year ago. With 280 votes in this poll (and 600 from last year), the mean has in fact dropped: about 40.5 years last year, and 39.8 years this year. I don't know how to check if that's significant statistically, but it does suggest that young people are joining faster than old people are dropping out.

51. But it sounds better in Italian: cinquantuno. Heck, everything sounds better in Italian.
I've spent about 22.3% of my life as a Doper. So anyway what do you suppose is the reason for 30- and 40-somethings to dominate so preponderantly? |

My dad, being a CPA, always made the exact same joke about my sister, also born at the end of December. As a matter of fact, she was induced. But I'm pretty sure that the reason for it being a tax deduction was a joke.

Right. So like he said...old.
You old timers may be amused that this summer's hit dance, the Shuffle (Youtube), is basically a Charleston. You not-so-old timers may be amused that the other half of the dance is just a Running Man. You really-not-so-old timers will recognize it as a modern version of the Melbourne Shuffle. I giggle at the thought of the young side of this poll dancing off against the "more experienced" side of it and getting crushed. |

Mature is just a synonym for old! When I first joined, I would've thought being between 30 and 50 was ancient. Now I am (barely) between 30 and 50. I'll be 32 and 1/2 later this month, 33 before Xmas.
