i think asynchronous games are the easiest time sinks to manage as far as games go, any other type of games would require greater time commitments. there is no time limit and you take your turn only when you want to. there isn't anyone standing around waiting for you so that the raid can begin. the impatient can simply start more games and the busy can take however long they want to take their turn.

I had Katniss and drew a mockingjay pin (from a model; I certainly didn't do it from memory) and they got it - it was one of my finer hours.

ETA - and as for "how they draw it", everybody draws a sailboat the same. Trust me.

bumping this as a heads-up that some of you who've posted your usernames here will be getting a new game from MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!

ETA: I kept hitting "send" without adding a message, accidentally. Normally I try to introduce myself, or at least ID myself as a Doper.

One thing I'm really enjoying is that my drawing skills actually seem to be improving. I'm falling back on stick figures less and less. I drew a pretty badass parrot for Mahaloth, and I just did a solidish caveman for someone.

My drawing skills seem to be getting slightly better, mostly by being exposed to better artists! Meeplet is amazing; I wish I could do so well. They REALLY need more words though...I find myself identifying the word just by the available letters, before the drawing is barely started. And I am so tired of drawing the same easy and medium ones that I stretch for the hard ones, often with poor results.... I will send you one, Purple, and if it goes through, will note that I am a Doper (not this username).

If you are reading this, Labtrash, sorry if Password was a little obscure. I've drawn it so much in a more conventional way that I was indulging myself with that one.

Does anyone have the paid version? Supposedly it has more words. I considered buying it, but the reviews were so poor on the latest edition...apparently, the game will post about every move you make on Facebook without asking permission each time (thus spamming your friends' news feeds with posts about games they don't care about). I find that potentially very annoying, so I've held off on ponying up the buck so far.

I have the paid version, and it never posts anything to Facebook. I probably forbade it from doing so when I set it up. I hate it when things do that.

sorry, your picture was so O-some i was kinda holding on to it so i can show it to the kids. i think i've sparked enough interest in one to spend more effort drawing than just to farm coins.

I've been trying to mix things up too and draw things more creatively, but since my drawing ability remains at the first grade level I think I just end up confusing people.

So, you can log in with your Facebook account but still forbid the game from making a bunch of junk posts on your behalf? That's good to hear, because that's not what the poor reviews are saying. I'd like to be able to have Facebook friends find me if they want to play, but I don't want to completely spam my friends' feeds like Farmville does (and since Draw Something is now owned by Zynga, that is a distinct possibility.)

I just downloaded the new update for the free game, and you can now add comments and save your drawings. Apparently, there are more words as well.

Actually, I don't log in with my Facebook info. I try never to log into anything but Facebook with my Facebook info, since I don't like my real name getting out into the wild.

Wow, turn 100! And a few words that I have not seen before.

When I played Farmville briefly, I did NOT want all those posts going to my wall, and also I made Farmville "friends" that I had never met, since you need them to do stuff. So I created a fictional Facebook account just for Farmville stuff. I don't play any more, but I find that account useful for all Facebook things I don't want to pepper my real friends with, including liking things. Profile picture is our rooster, name is made up, all emails from Facebook go to an account I rarely check. (Not using it for Draw Something, though, I just used a seldom-checked email account to log in and set up a username.)

Mine may be ok for a while since it was active with Farmville and I'm sure posts from "friends" continue to show up, but thanks for the heads-up. I find that I stay signed in to the fake one more than the real one (I'm not really a "status"-logging person), so my liking things as that fake person probably makes me appear fairly active. I agree that it might not be right to have more than one account, but that wouldn't happen if they would back off a tad... Also, I think people have put up pages for their dogs. Hmmm, better check that email account to see if I'm in trouble...

I tried this game once and I don't see the reason for its popularity.

I downloaded it, signed up, then fumbled around since instructions were nowhere to be found. It told me I could draw one of three things, so I chose "tongue" (the second hardest). I drew a tongue to the best of my ability, then waited for a response from the other player, but never got one. Haven't picked it up since.

Why are people so wild over this idiotic game? Am I missing something?

I didn't have much fun with it when I had random opponents, either. They didn't respond and on the rare occasions that they did, they usually just wrote out the word (which I find to be kind of insulting--at least try to draw, even if you just pick the easiest choice). But once I got a couple of RL friends and several Dopers on my game list, it got a lot more fun.

I'm Meeplet in the game, btw--if you want to add me, I promise to respond (though it might take me as long as a day).

Thanks, but I just uninstalled it after giving it a second chance. Any game where you need to wait a day for an opponent to make his move is not very fun in my opinion (not saying anything about you... just the nature of the game in general).

Yeah, I hear you. I have a bunch of people I play with, and I fit responses in between work and other stuff, so I can't always get to them right away. I actually like the way it works--you can get to it when you get to it, and as long as you don't take *too* long, everything's good. As always, YMMV.

if that is the reason then you've not given the game a fair shake.

Asynchronous multiplayer games should be approached with a different mindset from other games. you don't play a single game and wait days for the next turn, you start as many concurrent games as your time and patience dictates.

feel like playing for half an hour? then start games and draw away while taking your turns in existing games during that time, and stop when you want to. once you have enough games going on, you'll have a daisy chain of games ready to play at your own pace without needing to start more. only have 5 minutes to draw while waiting in line? this game is perfect for that.

the thing is, unlike other multiplayer games, this format places no onus on you to schedule a time to play. you play for as long as you wish and only when you want to, with no waiting time.

I'm currently running 25 sessions, and usually don't have more than 8 or so sessions waiting for my turn when I pick up the ipad in the evenings. It takes about 30 minutes to run through those (more if I'm feeling "artistic"), and I'm done. On weekends I might play a bit more.

And today I finally got "hobo" as a choice, but didn't play it. What usually works for that one? A guy with a bindle (bag on a stick)??

That's what I always do. A cheerful guy in ragged clothes with a bindle, walking down railroad tracks.

What's your game name? I want to add you. (I'm Meeplet).

BTW, for all those I play with: I apologize if my responses are slow on the weekends. I do most of my drawings during work breaks during the week, or in the evenings while watching TV, neither of which I do on the weekends.

That happened to me once, but I think it was because the iPad picked up that I'd gotten my wrist too close to the screen while reaching for something past it.

I'm playing it, but what annoys me is what annoys me about all Zynga games: good idea, poor implementation.

I've played for about five days so far and here are things I've noticed

1) Can't purchase new colors except in game
2) Can't get back to main menu once you're inside a game unless you complete your turn. This means watching someone guess your picture, THEN guessing their picture, THEN drawing your own new picture before you're allowed access to the main menu again
3) Can't turn the screen sideways to do a landscape picture
4) No timeline as far as # of hours or # of days since player X's last turn
5) When choosing new opponents, no indication on when they last played a turn
6) No going back during your opponent's drawing turn to watch the drawing being done again.
7) No option to rewatch or save any drawings at a later point (except on a screen grab but that's not in-game functionality).

2 is the worst - when I get stuck on someone's image and want to move onto someone else's and come back to it, I have to manually close the app (so it forgets where it was in the app), re-open it... usually twice because it often crashes the first time, then pick something else. That's part of the reason I'm not getting my turns all that often, when I get stuck it's a hassle to move on.
