4509 rounds the corner shotgun-first, the firearm's muzzle equipped with a black sound suppressor. He seems ready to fire but at the last moment decides these men aren't worth the ammunition. He tosses the weapon down and surges towards the nearest target as a set retractable chromed blades extend from his forearms.

Nail puts out his cigarette and steps forward. "I can answer your questions. Whether you are satisfied with the answers is up to you. It's a good-news bad-news situation, you see." Nail stretches while saying the last part, trying to stay oblivious of the fact that the bad news part might go over like a lead balloon.

"You'll probably want the good news first. We have Chaggo with us. We got him just as you said. Only problem is, when we found Chaggo, Arry wasn't with him. Well, we gave Chaggo a one-over until we found out Arry's location, but the orc was tougher than he smelled." Here Nail pauses, letting the half-truths sink in.

Nail continues on, his voice rising in tension like a storyteller. "The damn pig lied to us. We found out that after he defected from you guys, he went to work for UO. He knew about the upcoming attack on Vayne, and the only lead we thought we got from torturing him was to head to the Dog Track. He played us for a buncha chumps." Nail's voice drops, channeling his shame from this whole mess with Chaggo and Donovan into his monologue.

"After that, I can't tell you too much, to be honest. The attack happened in a flash, and between our mage and Vayne, we were hit with a powerful confusion spell. When we came out of it, Vayne was an ex-mage and the club was deserted. We were on our way back to continue to see what we could get from Chaggo when you called." Nail lets out a small sigh.

"We knew you would be less than thrilled with the situation, but just because we're Runners doesn't mean we are going to disappear into the woodwork like so many roaches. We came, and now you have your answers."

Nail takes advantage of the natural ensuing awkward pause to light another cigarette. "Well, how do they strike you?"

While taking a puff of his cig, Nail thinks to himself: Huh, wonder if he'll buy it. Only one or two things were blatantly false. The rest were completely true, from a certain point of view.

Nail will use a point of edge for this exchange.

Nail has attempted to deceive Sasheille. Unfortunately for the crew, the elf is expertly able to mask his reactions. It would be nearly impossible to read his expression.

Nail now has one spent Edge.

"Very well," the elf says in response to Nail. "I want to go over the events of the previous days with you more thoroughly. Unfortunately, now is not the time.

A Synthcorp rival is planning to assault this building, and we believe the attack is imminent. We are willing to overlook your utter failure to complete any of the tasks in your contract, in exchange for your support during the attack. Refusal is not an option."

Sasheille turns toward Donovan, clearly displeased with his employee. "You've bled with these people," he says to Donovan. "Now you'll have the chance to bleed with them some more. You'll stay with them until we defeat the attack, and then your employment here with be reevaluated." Donovan has no response.

The elf then speaks to a third party via comlink. "Dex, you may enter now." Moments later, five men come into the room. They are Synthcorp veterans, part of the core of the corporation's security team. One man in particular stands out among the others, a cyborg with obvious torso and arm replacements. Goethe casually sizes the man up and decides he is probably extremely dangerous in battle. "These men are to be escorted to the armory," Sasheille commands the cyborg. "Make sure they don't wander." The elf then leaves the room.

"This way," the man called Dex says, and the group begins walking.

Donovan glances at Goethe with an urgent expression. It's clear to Goethe that Donovan does not want to go with this cyborg. Donovan has indicated he wants to make a move against the security team before the group gets to the armory, but he will wait for someone in the group to take the lead.

If someone in the group decides to attack the security team escorting them, it will be possible to "surprise" some (or possibly even all) of the security agents. Alternatively, you may allow the security team to finish the escort to the armory, against Donovan's judgment.

The results of 4509's surprise attack will be posted soon. Feel free to post what your characters inside the Synthcorp building are doing in the meantime!

Seeing Donovan's expression, Goethe makes a slight nod to indicate his understanding. When he gets a chance (i.e. most likely after leaving Sasheille's presence), he will gesture at his eyes and then point to himself, hoping that Donovan understands that Goethe wants him to wait until he gives the signal.

Goethe will also wordlessly pass the message on to Nail.

I'm assuming that since Goethe and Nail have run enough together in the past, they have an fairly extensive battlefield communication scheme worked out, enough to indicate pretty common occurrences such as "let's not let these guys get to their destination" and "follow my lead" all without saying a word.

Assuming Nail's on board, Goethe will then try to signal to Seneth the intent. However, realizing that Seneth has only been running with Goethe since the beginning of the Synthcorp mission, Goethe won't be surprised if Seneth doesn't get it. He will, however, put his fingers to his lips when he first gets Seneth's attention, hoping that the warlock at least understands not to vocally speak any confusion he might have.

Goethe will also try to indicate that he'll hit Dex and the others can choose other targets for the start.

Then waiting until they're at a fairly isolated portion of the journey, Goethe will position himself behind Dex, signal Donovan and Nail (and Seneth, if he actually figured the signals out) and slip his silenced pistol out its arm slide putting a slug point blank in the back of Dex's head. If the targeted shot alone doesn't take him out, he'll put a second one in.

4509 has extended his retractable cybernetic arm blades, and rounds the corner to leap at the man on the left. As soon as 4509 is in action, the Universal Omnitech squad veteran springs into action, drawing a long dagger from a sheath on his thigh.

Start Round 1

The maintenance workmen are completely taken by surprise, and helpless against the two seasoned warriors. 4509 slashes a large gash across the left man's back, and knocks him to the ground, immediately diving upon him like a bird of prey. The man isn't dead, but he has a foot in the grave and will not be able to put up much resistance to the cyborg's next attack.

The second man turns just in time to see the UO agent drive his dagger into the left side of his chest. The blade slides between his ribs, but not at a perfect angle to immediately incapacitate the man. He pushes off the UO agent and stumbles backward. Impressively, he brings his fists up in a feeble attempt to fight back.

Initiative pass 2

The UO agent wastes no time in finishing the kill. The agent advances on his target, pining him against the wall with his left hand, as his right uses the dagger to finish the job. The man falls, critically wounded and unconscious into a heap on the floor without even having the chance to fight back.

End round 1.

Begin round 2

The man beneath 4509 tries to shout in fear, but the cyborg's left hand covers his mouth before the sound can escape. With one more careful, deliberate strike, he kills the maintenance man with the cybernetic blade on his right arm. The rest of the UO commando crew rounds the corner, and together the group continues to their destination...

Meanwhile, Goethe is preparing to give an attack signal to the rest of the crew. The cyborg named Dex stops suddenly in his tracks as a transmission is broadcast to him. Your crew can not hear what is being broadcast.

"Did you catch that?" Dex says to his crew.

"Yes sir," one man confirms. "Looks like it's starting."

Dex begins issuing orders. "Fallon, with me. They're in the drain system. The rest of you, double-time to the armory. Get these mutts armed, and to the surveillance office."

Goethe may give his signal now, and attack the entire Synthcorp squad, or wait for Dex to depart along with the agent named Fallon before giving his signal.

At seeing Goethe's signals, Nail wil initially express surprise, then doubt and reluctance, but a few seconds later he will comply. He's been on too many runs with Goethe to second-guess him now, especially seeing how anxious Donovan looks. When the attack goes down, Nail will throw his jacket at the nearest two goons while loudly saying, "hold my coat!" Immediately after he will execute a brutal jump kick on the guards.

Wait, we were supposed to help fight on an expected attack against Synthcorp, but now we are fighting the "crew" that was going to fight along side us? .....becuase we don't want to or something? Before Seneth does/doesn't receive his signal of what is going on, I'd like to make sure I understand what is going on.

Why would we do this(if I'm understanding this correctly)?

Synthcorp still thinks you're on their side. It's the whole reason you're able to infiltrate their headquarters to begin with.

Synthcorp is the enemy. We've seen evidence of what they do to successful runner teams they hire. We were sent on a mission the real purpose of which was to recover sensitive information extremely damaging to them. We failed on that mission. If they kill successful teams, they certainly have good reason to kill the failed ones. Especially because they can't risk us knowing what's in that information. It is unlikely that we will get out of this building alive working with them. Seneth has been filled in on all that. Right now, Synthcorp apparently still believes we and Donovan want to work for them. But we have been hired for far more money to sabotage them instead by UO, who are currently trying to invade Synthcorp. And UO is unlikely to kill us. Their motives are profit-driven. Synthcorp's motives are cover-your-ass. People in CYA mode are more unpredictable.

So our team will get paid more and stand a considerable higher chance of being able to spend that money by betraying Synthcorp.

Upon realizing that Dex is about to take off, Geothe thinks quickly:

You got two choices here. Let Dex go, and then you and your party can easily jump the rest, or take Dex out now, which will prove considerably more difficult. Dex alone would pose a significant difficulty to the party as it stands, and he's got backup. Fortuntely, you have the advantage of surprise. And you and Nail are quick. You'll be able to get multiple shots at point blank to Dex's head before he can so much as flinch. You take him out, and this fight is easily winnable. Plus, if you let him go, who knows what he's got planned for the UO infiltration teams. Not to mention that he might just double back and take you out anyway. Better the Devil you know than the one you don't. Just don't fuck up.

Geothe will give the signal to the group, and loosing his pistol will fire a silenced slug into the base of Dex's skull at point blank range. (I.e. called shot to do maximum damage), assuming Dex doesn't die from that, he'll sink another one in for this initiative pass in the surprise round.

Nice summary Hoopy.

Oh, and in case it matters in terms of the action economy, before Nail tells the guards to hold his coat and throws it at them in response to Goethe's attack on Dex, Nail will have taken it off first on the guise of being warm.

Seneth isn't particularly looking for any signals from anybody, but he's also not particularly caught up in thought.

If he perceives anything from any team member, he will go along fully.

Goethe and Nail act nearly simultaneously, ambushing the Synthcorp crew. The four standard security agents are taken by surprise, but the cyborg Dex is too professional for the ruse to work on him.

Goethe's hidden pistol slides into his hand as he makes a called shot at Dex's head.

A called shot suffers an attack penalty, simulating the difficulty of hitting a particular vulnerable area. The benefit is that if the shot hits, only armor which is worn on the area targeted will apply against the shot. In this case, Dex has significant armor due to his cybernetic body replacements, but his skull has not been artificially replaced. Also, Dex's armor vest will not help him so Dex will receive no armor benefit for this attack. Calling a shot costs a free action. Unfortunately, Goethe has already used a free action this round to quick-draw his pistol, so this called shot will cost a simple action instead.

Begin Surprise round -

Goethe slides the pistol up to Dex's head and pulls the trigger, but something in the cyborg tingles with a sixth sense of danger. Dex turns to face Goethe a split second before the bullet fires. He's not fast enough to get out of the way, but its just enough to prevent certain death. The bullet pierces through the right side of Dex's jaw at an upward angle. The damage is spectacular, shattering the bones and joints in the area of impact, but is not fatal.

Without hesitating, Dex draws his own pistol, and fires back at Goethe as he leaps behind a large decorative planter. His aim is hasty and rushed, but still accurate. Goethe feels the familiar searing sting of a bullet wound, hitting him in the left calf. Luckily, it seems like no serious damage has occurred, and Goethe will be able to fight on without penalty.

Goethe has done 5 damage to Dex, and Dex has returned 2 physical damage to Goethe. Dex is now protected by partial cover, which will make it slightly harder to hit him. Goethe's actions were free-quick draw,simple-call shot, simple-fire pistol. Dex's actions were the following: free-leap to cover, simple-standard draw pistol, simple-fire pistol. Goethe may use a free action to call a shot next initiative pass, as long as he does not take another different free action!

Meanwhile, Nail has thrown his coat toward the nearest Synthcorp agent, and engaged the next closest agent in melee. He leaps at the agent, delivering a crushing kick to the man's ribs. The man gasps in surprise, and Nail follows up with a powerful uppercut punch to the man's chin. The man reels, but doesn't fall.

Nail has done 5 stun damage to a Synthcorp agent, who was not able to defend himself due to surprise. Nail's actions were the following; free-throw coat, complex-melee attack. One agent must spend a simple action next round disentangling from Nail's coat.

Donovan was also astute enough to catch Goethe's signal. He roars with surprising fury as he charges at a Synthcorp agent. Seneth sees a flash of magic as Donovan's fist impacts a Synthcorp agent's jaw.

He's an adept! Seneth realizes with sudden delight. Now, it seems so obvious to the warlock. His ring is a weapon focus! Seneth flashes back to the first battle he had with the crew, where Donovan knocked a giant troll unconscious with a single blow at Fortnight's hideout. Now, Seneth is forced to view Donovan with a new found respect.

The Synthcorp agent Donovan struck stumbles backward two steps, and falls to the ground. Seneth can't tell for sure, but it looks like the man is not breathing.

Next round will be a full combat round (not surprise) which all characters may participate in. Seneth was not able to participate in the surprise round, but he may take his first initiative pass as normal in round one of the standard combat phase.

End Surprise Combat Round

Meanwhile, the cyborg 4509 receives a transmission from Walken via comlink.

"Synthcorp has been alerted to your presence. Your group is to stand down, in order to give Goethe's crew time to upload the virus. Otherwise, the Synthcorp security drones will be unhindered and able to thwart you. Wait until we have confirmation that the virus has taken effect. Please acknowledge receipt of this transmission."

"Impressive, my child!" Seneth yells at Donovan. "But not as impressive as this."

Seneth casts Manabolt at the nearest Synthcorp agent he sees.

Nail will continue fighting melee and making wisecracks as appropriate. If it looks like he will be fired upon, he will dodge or use the nearest guard as a shield.

So he was expecting it. It appears this guy's as paranoid as you are. Well, at least you got him worse than he got you. However, you need this over quick. After all, the team has a lot to do and spending time here isn't getting any of it done. Besides, you don't want to give a chance for backup to come, and if Synthcorp is on to the attack, the assault groups are likely to be waiting on your team to finish its goal.

BTW, it appears you've been underestimating Donovan all this time.

Goethe will make another called shot to Dex's head. He will aim first and add an edge pool to the attack roll.

Nail moves to attack the agent he has already hurt, looking to finish him off.

"You've got something on your nose!" Nail says, as his left hand lashes out to hit the man's face. The agent blocks the attack, but Nail follows up with a right hook that weaves through the agent's defense and hits him in the face. In a desperate gamble, the man reaches out with both hands and attempts to tackle Nail, who casually sidesteps out of reach. "Tag! You're it!" Nail taunts.

Nail has done 3 stun damage to the previously injured Synthcorp agent. The agent doesn't have much fight left in him, but he's not out yet. Donovan has taken out 1 agent in the surprise round, and another is disentangling from Nail's coat. There is 1 more agent not accounted for yet this round.

The Synthcorp agent with Nail's coat angrily tosses it aside, and draws his pistol. "You're dead, slim!" The agent shouts at Nail, as Donovan charges him. He barely has time to react as Donovan throws a savage haymaker punch at his head. The man ducks just in time, and blocks Donovan's left hand followup, but he doesn't completely avoid Donovan's third swing. The man flinches away from the blow instinctively, causing it to glance off his ribs. Even so, there's a loud "crack!" of breaking ribs, that Nail can hear even above the sound of Goethe and Dex's pistol shots. The agent shoves off Donovan and staggers backward.

The agent Donovan injured will participate in the next initiative pass. He used a free action to speak a phrase to Nail, a simple action to disentangle from the coat, and a simple action to draw his pistol. Donovan used a free action to close distance, and a complex action to engage in melee.

Nail hears an ominous "click" as the safety is disengaged from a firearm behind him. He turns to see the uninjured agent pointing a burst-fire rifle at him.

"Game over," the agent says, and pulls the trigger.

Nail attempts to leap out of the way, but the agent tracks him with the rifle as he fires. A short burst of pure hell leaps from the barrel of the rifle, and Nail feels at least one of the bullets shredding through the flesh of his abdomen in mid-air. He lands with a "thud" on the ground, in immediate agony.

Nail has taken 4 physical damage from an assault rifle. Nail's defense pool was reduced for this attack, as it was the 2nd incoming attack he rolled against this round (the first was the agent attempting to tackle him). Attacks incoming from multiple sources are quite dangerous! The agent used a free action to speak to Nail, a simple action to ready (draw) his weapon, and a simple action to fire.

The agent stands over Nail, with a smug, gloating expression, as he is suddenly hurled backward against the wall by a powerful force. "Impressive, my child!" Seneth yells at Donovan. "But not as impressive as this." Seneth's manabolt spell crackles with energy that seems to dance across the man's body for a few moments after impact.

Seneth has caused 8 points of physical damage with his manabolt spell. It's nearly enough to knock the agent unconscious, but the man is heroically still trying to fight, and will participate in the next initiative pass. Seneth has suffered 1 point of drain by casting this spell.

Dex and Goethe are in something of a standoff. Dex has nowhere to go, but Goethe is waiting for the precise moment when Dex exits cover to blow his head off.

"You can't win!" Dex says. "No matter what happens to me, you won't walk out of this building!" The words are still intelligible, although garbled due to the damage to his jaw.

Goethe remains silent.

With a sudden flurry of motion, Dex leaps sideways through the air from behind his cover and brings his pistol to bear against Goethe. His finger tightens around the trigger as he lines up the perfect shot against the ork, but he never gets to take it. His lifeless body falls to the ground, dead before his feet even touch the floor, a single bullet hole in his forehead.

Goethe has killed the cyborg Dex, spending a point of Edge to do so.

End First Initiative Pass

Time is running short! Donovan can direct you crew to the Security mainframe, but the longer it takes, the more preparation Synthcorp has against Chaggo's awakened warriors, and 4509's commando squad. Three Synthcorp agents are still fighting, but all of them are injured and can only put up a small resistance.

Begin Second Initiative Pass

Donovan rushes to Nail and helps him to his feet. "Follow me! There's no time!" he shouts to Nail, and rushes down the hallway, away from the fight.

Donovan has spent his 2nd initiative pass helping Nail to his feet, speaking a simple phrase to him, and running, presumably toward the Security mainframe. Nail may follow him, or stay and finish the fight.

Goethe will participate in the 2nd initiative pass, but Seneth may only participate by spending a point of Edge.

Seeing the interaction between Donovan and Nail, Goethe as a free action will say to them:

"Go! I've got this part covered!"

He will then shoot his pistol at the agent with the rifle. If that doesn't finish him off, he'll fire again, otherwise, he'll fire his second action at the one that Donovan injured.

If it is a free action, Seneth will leave the battle and follow to the security main frame.

To Goethe:

"Owl will help you, my child, but I can not continue to fight for now. These children are quite weak now and will be dead soon. If you wish, leave them on the ground and come with us!"

"Game Over, eh?" Nail manages to whince out while rising agonizingly to his feet. "Sorry chump, looks like I have another Continue."

Nail then proceeds to use his attribute boost, his body surging with a new-found boost of energy. Taking advantage of this window, Nail will grab his coat ("Aw, you dropped my coat") and then run as best he can to follow Donovan.

Goethe quickly dispatches the two armed Synthcorp agents, while Nail and Donovan sprint toward the Security mainframe, with Seneth a few steps behind.

The surviving Synthcorp agent flees the scene, and Goethe can hear him making a transmission into his comlink as he runs.

Gig's up, Goethe realizes. We're marked now for sure.

Goethe had enough of a dice pool advantage to guarantee success over the two targets, due to their previous injuries. No rolls were necessary. Goethe may now recover 3 clips of ammo for his assault rifle, if he wants to spend the time to do so.

Donovan leads Seneth and Nail through winding corridors in the Synthcorp building. Luckily, the Synthcorp Security forces are being mobilized toward entry points in preparation for the UO assault, and the group doesn't run into any resistance.

Donovan finally stops at a secured doorway with a fingerprint access panel.

"Synthcorp has been developing military-grade combat drones. This attack has zero chance to succeed until we upload the virus." Donovan types a numerical code into the keypad and places his index finger on the pad. The door opens before him, and Donovan urges Nail and Seneth through. "The virus won't shut them down completely, but it'll knock out the advanced algorithms controlling them. They'll be dumber and slower, hopefully enough to take them out manually."

Inside the room is a huge array of machinery. "This network is protected by the strongest ICe Synthcorp knows to exist. Fortunately, the chip you're holding has a sprite strong enough to defeat it. Leave it here, and give it time. The worm will unravel the Synthcorp ICe, but it will take awhile. We can either stay here and guard it, or hide it close by and hope nobody finds it, so we can meet up with the commando team. What's your call?

Seneth's eyes glaze over for the first part of Donovan's talking, but he focuses in on the last.

"My child, you speak nonsense most of the time, but I believe I understand your main point. If we stay here and guard this metal machine device, what kind of forces can we expect to face? If it is insurmountable, I suggest we hide our wormy thing and just leave."

Also, if Seneth believes that he can avoid further drain, he will cast Detect Magic on the room, especially on the area/machine-part that the team is to put the virus thingy on.

Nail holds his stomach and winces in pain. "Oof. Neither of those options sound so great right about now. But, I know one thing, we go meet up with our friend the terminator now he's just as likely to take us out as the enemy." He holds the chip up and examines it. "That and our main goal here is to make sure this virus or w/e does its job."

Nail takes advantage of the downtime to light a cig. "I guess that's two things," he quips out of the corner of his mouth.

Goethe puts his pistol back into the slide and grabs the clips off of the fallen, putting one of them into his AK. He briefly revels in the knowledge that he once again has a full complement of weaponry.

He then reports over the commlink:

"Guys, one of the agents escaped and has reported in. Needless to say, we're all marked. If anyone suspects what Donovan is doing, they'll be coming after you. If they have a way to track his position, there are probably already people on their way. I'm going to make my way toward you while trying to avoid any unnecessary confrontations. Keep me appraised if anything happens, and I'll do the same."

Goethe will then make his way toward the room the others are in using door frames and unlocked rooms to try to stay out of sight.

I assume either Nail can guide me over the commlink or the commlinks since they operate on the same encrypted channel probably can home in on each other.

4509 receives another message from Walken via comlink. "The virus has uploaded into the Security mainframe. Make entry into the facility now. Redundancy programs will keep the security drones online, but they will be much less dangerous while the server is under attack. Prioritize the elimination of humanoid hostiles over drones."

The lead commando agent nods at 4509 to get his attention. "On the other side of this wall is a Synthcorp maintenance warehouse in basement level 3. That'll get us in on the lowest level, and it'll be unlikely we'll meet heavy resistance there. Up ahead, the drain system slopes upward toward the Synthcorp research labs on basement level 2. If we blow the wall there, you can be sure we'll meet heavy resistance, but we'll be closer to your crew in case they need help. It's up to you."

Meanwhile, Nail and Seneth are preparing to defend the Security mainframe server.

"It won't take long for Synthcorp to realize their server is under attack," Donovan says. "Be ready."

Seneth casts detect magic on the area, and finds no evidence of Synthcorp using magic.

"I know what you're thinking," Donovan says as he sees Seneth analyzing the machinery, "but we can't just destroy it. At least, not until Chaggo's crew seizes the Surveillance room. The virus will trick the system into giving his crew access to the building. After that, this whole place can blow up for all I care."

Donovan sees Nail nursing the bleeding injury to his abdomen. "Can you help him?" Donovan asks Seneth. "I have a feeling we're going to need every edge we can get soon."

Finally, Donovan speaks to Nail. "Just in case we don't make it, you should hide the chip. At least if they kill us, we'll make it harder on them to ruin the mission."

Goethe is enroute to meet with Nail and Seneth, but finds a Synthcorp security group of 4 agents blocking the most direct route. Goethe can attempt to ambush the group, in which case a successful infiltration+agility roll will give him a surprise round of combat. Alternatively, he can take a less direct route which will take more time to rendezvous with the rest of his crew.

Upon hearing Donovan mention Nail's injury to Seneth, Nail tries to act nonchalant. "It's only a flesh wound...Ungh." The groan betrays him instantly. "But, a little healin' or somethin' would be nice."

Nail later responds to Donovan concerning hiding the chip: "Sure thing. When you put it like that, how can I refuse?" While searching for a good spot, he says, "By the way, got any ammo that would work in my gun? I'm a bit short."

While his usual rogue-ish and optimistic self on the outside, Nail can't help but think to himself, "Hope it doesn't have to come to that, but things are looking bad..."

"I can help this child if I wish...."

Seneth pauses and looks around.

"....and.....I do."

Seneth casts Heal on Nail.

If battle has not begun and Seneth is feeling reasonably strong, he will cast Armor on himself as well.

He's clutching a pair of grenades by their pins with his teeth, ready to be pulled and tossed: One a flashbang and the other a high explosive. He's got another of each in the webbing of his heavy camo gear. He crouches near the entry point, pulling his shotgun against his shoulder. With a thought he triggers the explosive. If he sees or hears any movement in any of his vision modes or detects movement on the other side with his ultrasound device in the second or two after the explosion he'll toss a flashbang through the breach point before moving in ahead of the commandos, indifferent to incoming gunfire.

Goethe makes his way toward the rest of the party until he comes upon the four agents.

"Shit!" Goethe interjects across the commlink. "Four agents in my path. I should be able to get the jump on them, but four against one, even with someone of my talents, is not an odds game I want to play. Besides, Dex already took a small chunk out of me, I'm not going to be much help to you guys if I have to crawl my way to you. Sorry, but I'm going to have to take the long road here. If you run into major trouble, let me know. Otherwise, I'll see you when I get there. Goethe out."

Goethe will bypass the agents, following the same stealthy routine he's been employing so far.

As the sprite contained in the chip attacks Synthcorp's security mainframe and uploads the virus, Chaggo's boisterous voice comes over the crew's comlinks.

"We just got confirmation the virus is doing its thing. Knew I could count on you guys! Keep your shorts on a few more minutes, 'cuz the big guns are on the way."

"I hate that ork," Donovan says aloud. Over the comlink, he grumbles to Chaggo, "Make it fast. We're about to have Synthcorp breathing down our necks."

Donovan and the crew are greeted by the sound of shouting and gunfire from Chaggo's comlink transmission. "Oh really?" Chaggo shouts over the chaos. "Good thing you said so, 'cuz we were thinking about just taking it slow and maybe having some lemonade!"

Donovan has no ammunition to offer Nail, or even a pistol for himself.

Seneth finds it trivially easy to heal Nail's wound. Seneth whispers a strange chant as he moves his hands over Nail's abdomen in rhythmic cycles. For a moment there is a flash of agony as the tissue in his gut mends back together, forcefully expelling a medium caliber bullet. Nail nearly shouts in pain, but suddenly the ordeal is over as the metal slug falls with a barely audible "tink!" onto the tiled floor.

Seneth has suffered no drain from his casting attempt.

When Seneth's short spell is finished casting, Nail gets to work finding a hiding place for the chip. He sees a power supply conduit attached loosely to the wall, and slips the chip in the gap.

Nail has made a test using his intuition + perception, which will establish a baseline for any attempt to find the chip. Nail is quite confidet the chip will be safe from even a concerted effort to locate it, at least for awhile.

The ominous sound of many footsteps can be heard appoaching the room Donovan, Seneth, and Nail are in. "Help me brace the door!" Donovan says. His body begins to glow with magical energy, and Nail sees the muscles on his thin frame swell impressively. He throws his weight against the door as Synthcorp tries to force it open from the other side. He won't be able to hold the door shut much longer by himself!

Begin combat round 1

Donovan is attempting to hold the heavy metal door shut against Synthcorp agents. This will be a str+str opposed test against the Synthcorp agents, which will be rerolled every combat round until the group fails the test or Synthcorp gives up. The test will be modified in the group's advantage if Nail can contribute some extra strength to the task.

Meanwhile, Goethe is attempting to move unnoticed through the Synthcorp building. This will test his agility + infiltration skill. Synthcorp has been given a description of Goethe and is actively searching for him, which complicates matters. He is managing to avoid detection for now. He can proceed cautiously to meet up with Nail's group, letting him arrive in 3 combat rounds with almost sure success to avoid detection. Alternatively, he may proceed quickly to Nail's group, in which case he does not have an advantage in his infiltration roll, but he will arrive after 1 combat round.

Meanwhile, 4509's explosion powers through the wall separating the research and development lab and the drain system. 4509 sees laser sight targetting systems activate from behind the settling dust, and decides to throw a flashbang grenade into the room.

From the brief look 4509 got in the room, there is a horde of combat drones too thick to count inside the room.

"Don't go in yet!" the UO agent says. "Our hackers are in cybercombat now. We can probably shut at least a few of them offline, but we need some time. We should guard the breach from this side so the hackers are protected." The man gestures behind him, where 4509 can see two of the commandos with cyberdecks fully immersed in simsense VR.

Heedless of the lead commando agent's warning, 4509 wordlessly steps over the rubble into the room. The targeting systems of a multitude of drones adjust slowly to converge on a single point of the cyborg's chest, even as he blows two of them to scrap with his shotgun...

Begin Combat round 1

Hearing that the party has run into trouble, Goethe considers heading to them immediately, but then thinks better of it. After all, what good is it to help them out if all he does is draw more attention to them immediately. Plus, he'd rather not risk getting caught in the crossfire from those trying to get at the party and those trying for him. So he'll take his time to get to the room, and maybe even get the jump on the agents with his assault rifle if they're too busy concentrating on getting in the room to notice him coming up on their flank.

4509 chucks his high explosive grenade into the group. If he has actions remaining he'll use it to fire and then take cover, in that order. Maybe he's got a deathwish, maybe he just doesn't give any fucks, but he doesn't bother retreating back into the drain or calling for commando support (though in the off-chance their balls drop and they decide to join him in the fight he'll avoid tossing his grenade anywhere near them).

I will revise this command now.

If Seneth knows he is able to, he will address the group:

"My children,.....we need help. Real help. Right now."

Seneth's eyes close and he begins to breathe slowly.

"Join us, now. Spirit of Earth, come and fight along side us. We respect you and your kin and need you now. Fight on our behalf for this brief moment, and I will release you back to whence you have come.

Join us, Earth Spirit!!!!"

Seneth has summoned, obviously, an Earth Spirit. While doing so, he has gradually raised his arms up over his head until they are straight up.

His eyes pop open and he begins to look around.

Seneth calls upon a spirit of earth to aid the crew inside the Security mainframe. While he is performing the summoning ritual, Chaggo transmits over the comlink. In the background is the sound of battle even more intense than in his previous transmission.

“You're on your own for now, kids,” the ork says. “We've got nobody to spare. These goons are pushing back hard!”

Seneth completes his ritual, and a spirit of earth materializes in the mainframe room. The spirit has chosen to assume the appearance of an impossibly large snake.

“You will have three services from me, warlock,” the snake hisses to Seneth. “Choose them wisely.”

Seneth's summoned earth spirit is slightly stronger than an average spirit of its type. Unfortunately Seneth miscalculated the toll it would take on him to summon such a creature, and has suffered three points of stun damage as a result of drain from summoning. This damage will heal on its own given some time, but for now Seneth will suffer a small penalty to all his dice rolls due to injury.

The lock on the door has been disengaged, and Synthcorp agents are attempting to force it open while Donovan and Nail are bracing against it.

(Although Nail did not specify it, I will assume he will use boost attribute – strength adept power prior to making the opposed test)

Nail operating at his physical peak is a sight to behold! The door begins to wedge open against Donovan's effort, until Nail throws his shoulder against the door and manages to push it back in place.

From the other side of the door, Nail can hear the frustrated grunts of Synthcorp agents in their struggle. “Garn!” one of the agents commands. “Knock this goddamned door down!”

“Happily, I do it,” comes the unmistakable, booming guttural voice of a troll. Even worse, Seneth can sense the power of a physical adept being activated. As magical strength flows through the adept troll's body, the beast growls with a low, deep, satisfied glee. Suddenly, a powerful blow knocks the door open a few inches against Donovan and Nail's bracing effort. They struggle to hold it closed, but it suddenly seems like a hopeless effort.

“You ready to die?” Donovan asks Nail. “If not, we can still get the hell out of here. All this machinery vents into duct system big enough for a man to fit through. Sure, they might find the chip, but it'll take them awhile, and hopefully we'll wrap this mission up first. We could have the snake-thing cover our escape.

Nail/Donovan have tied against Synthcorp in their opposed test. Although they successfully held the door closed for now, they will suffer a penalty against Synthcorp in the next opposed test if they attempt to hold it another round.

Meanwhile, the cyborg 4509 has stepped into a room full of combat drones, despite the protest of the lead commando in his squad.

“Shit!” the commando says. After a moment, he commands the rest of the group, “breach! Go, go, go!”

The men in the commando squad pour through the opening made by 4509's explosives. The scene immediately erupts in complete pandemonium, as 4509's grenade detonates among a cluster of drones. The high explosive erupts dramatically, spreading shrapnel from the drones in every direction. 4509 himself can't even be sure how many bots were wrecked in the blast.

The commandos and drones open fire simultaneously. The drones have focused their fire on the primary threat – the hulking cyborg. Dozens of small caliber rounds ricochet off the metal frame of the cyborg, and at first it seems the man/machine might be truly invincible.

But, he is only human. Even a man at the peak of techno-evolution is vulnerable to his flesh. Some of the bullets find sensitive areas of his cybernetics, damaging components that reduce his efficiency. Some others find bits of flesh that haven't been completely converted to synthetic material. For the first time since he can remember, 4509 is bleeding.

The concentrated effort of the drones in the room has managed to cause four points of stun damage (from bullets that could not penetrate armor, but still did damage) and two points of physical damage (from bullets that penetrated armor) to the cyborg known as 4509.

The rest of the commando crew advances into the room, firing short, controlled bursts at the drones. The commando hackers manage to suppress any further drone fire as the rest of the crew wraps up.

As 4509 stands over the wreckage and a disturbing puddle of his own blood, the commando veteran approaches him and speaks.

“I know you don't like orders, and I won't give you any. I'm not your commander. But to these other men, I am. I can't take risks like that again. You're powerful alright, but is it enough to finish this on your own?” The man isn't expecting a reply, but he doesn't walk away.

After a moment, Walken comes over the comlink. “I am aware you have breached the research and development labs. Good work! Unfortunately, the rest of the crew is not faring as well. Rendezvous with Nail, Seneth, and Goethe at the security mainframe. If you wish, you can leave some agents behind at your current location to salvage Synthcorp tech. There will be a reward for doing so, but it's not a priority, and don't compromise your mission to do so.”

There are twelve commandos in the team 4509 is co-leading. The veteran commando is willing to part with up to four of them, to dedicate them toward salvaging tech from the lab, but he leaves the option to 4509.

Getting to the security mainframe room will take five combat turns. Alternatively, 4509 may want to ignore Walken's order, and start sweeping through the building floor by floor to hunt for Johnson. A good place to start would be the executive offices, which are attached to a balcony with a helipad. From there, a helicopter could potentially be ready to escape with Johnson in only a few minutes. A third option is to meet with Chaggo's team to assist them. If Chaggo's team successfully conquers the surveillance room, they will be able to find where Johnson is almost immediately, and keep track of him.

Meanwhile, Goethe has spent this combat round avoiding Synthcorp agents and making his way toward Nail's group. He will arrive in 2 more combat rounds.

4509 lifts his left hand to be examined. The rings on his mechanical eyes contract as he zooms in on the smear of blood on his palm. He considers it for a moment in silence, not immediately responding to the Universal Omnitech soldier addressing him. After a long pause he finally looks to the commander as Walken's voice sounds in his mind. He responds into the comm; "Right."

To Goethe, Nail and Chaggo's comms (Seneth doesn't have one): "Support is en route. Hold those fucks off as long as you can."

Wiping the blood from his hand 4509 finally addresses his co-leader: "Four bodies in here to salvage what they can before we have to bug out. Two with me to the offices to prevent escape. You and the rest babysit the runners."

The cyborg doesn't wait for confirmation, immediately reloading and making his way up towards the executive offices and the helipad in-case the target tries to make a run for it. If the commander decides to comply and send two men along with him, good, if not, so be it. Any Synthcorp employees he encounters on the way, armed or not, he'll kill.

Nail braces the door with all his might, and for a second it looks like it will hold. Then comes Garn's low, guttural, growl, and a crashing bang that jolts the door a few inches in one push. "Great, they have a cave troll," Nail deadpans, his sarcasm coming through despite his winded breath.

It is at this time that Donovan enquires into whether Nail feels like dying, to which Nail responds urgently: "I'm all for running to live and fight another day, but Goethe is on his way. We leave now and he's stranded!"

Nail continues pushing with all his might, while the door continues to move inexorably inward. "On second thought, we're no good to him dead either. If Cobra Kahn over here can't brace this damn door a little longer, we have no choice but to blow this popsicle stand."

When he has a chance, he will address Seneth: "Hey Seneth, got any other aces up your sleeve? If so, now's the time."

Donovan thinks for a moment, and suddenly abandons the door. He sprints toward an access panel on the machinery in the room, which opens wide enough for him to crawl through.

"I want to live long enough to catch that son of a bitch Johnson," Donovan says. "We're no good to the team if we're dead. Come with me. This ductwork can bring us close to the elevator. Robot-man's commandos are on the way, and there's no way these chumps'll find the chip before the commandos get here. Goethe can meet up with us at the elevator. Seneth's earth spirit will buy us time to escape."

The snake-like spirit takes Nail's place bracing the door. It's about as strong as Nail is, and maybe even slightly stronger. It won't be able to hold the door against the troll by itself, but Nail gets the impression the spirit is tough enough to last long enough in battle to cover their escape.

Nail and Seneth may choose to stay in the room and prepare for imminent combat, or follow Donovan. Either way, the troll will certainly bust through the door soon! Goethe will arrive from behind the Synthcorp group next round, and will be able to fight in the round after. Alternatively, Goethe can change his route to meet up at the elevator.

Meanwhile, Chaggo's group has still failed to capture to surveillance office. From this room, Chaggo would be able to override security features on doors and elevators, monitor Johnson's location, and direct the assault team more efficiently with the knowledge of all Synthcorp agents' location. If the ork can capture the room soon, it will make the rest of the crew's jobs a lot easier!

"These Natives are tough, but we can't punch through," Chaggo says via comlink. "We're locked down in the main hallway on the fourth floor. A little extra firepower could be all we need, if some of you kids could make it up here."

Meanwhile, the commando leader has agreed to split his crew up. Four men stay behind in the labs salvaging Synthcorp tech, six head to the security mainframe (including the commando leader), and two are with the cyborg 4509, heading to the executive offices helipad.

When 4509 and his small crew reach the elevator to take them to the executive offices level, the elevator doors close behind them, but none of the buttons work.

"They know we're here," one of the two says. He activates a cyberdeck and prepares to enter simsense VR*. "We'll have to hack through the Synthcorp firewall to activate the elevator. Meanwhile, they can keep us locked in here, or move the elevator anywhere they want."

"Fix it," the cyborg says, almost threateningly.

The man doesn't respond directly, but says "cover me," as he immerses in simsense. He can no longer see or hear the group as he navigates through the Matrix.

Ominously, the elevator begins to move up. There's no way the UO agent had enough time to be the one responsible for the elevator's motion. The remaining UO agent glances nervously at 4509, and says "When these doors open, there will surely be Synthcorp agents on the other side. I can either help you fight them, or I can help him." The man gestures to the other UO agent immersed in simsense. "It's up to you, but I can't do both."

*Simsense VR is a mode in which hackers in the New World can navigate the digital reality of the Matrix. In simsense, the real world is almost completely reduced to "background noise" while all of the user's senses are filled with data from the Matrix. Simsense is not complete "hot sim" immersion however, and simsense users are still protected from neurological damage from Matrix attacks. In exchange, they're a bit slower and less precise in the Matrix than the crazy hot sim hackers are. A hot sim hacker will plug himself directly into the grid, and exist entirely within the Matrix while hot sim is engaged. Matrix attacks could do permanent physical damage to a hot sim hacker, but for someone not gifted with the power of Technomancy, hot-sim is the most immersive way to navigate the digital world.

It doesn't take Nail long to grumble back, "Fine. Didn't like this party much anyway."

Nail passes Seneth on the way to the ventilation shaft.. "C'mon let's go. Save those aces for a better hand."

While following Donovan into the duct-work, Nail messages Goethe by comm. "Hey, we got some unwanted guests and had to bounce early. Reconvene at the elevator. Copy."

4509 crouches for a moment to stow away his shotgun in one of his bags. When he rises, he's standing between the two agents and the doorway. "Take control of the elevator." He lifts both arms, his right's transparent casing now emitting a luminescent green. Hidden compartments on both arms slide open as pair of highly-customized Ares Crusader machine pistols are sent spinning from within his forearms to his open hands. The weapons themselves are made from the same transparent steel as his right arm, each brimming with interior computers. He readies both firearms at the doors, shielding the immersed agents with his body.

"Earth spirit, continue to barricade the door, but if they break through, please return to me! I have two more orders for you then!"

Seneth flees with the others.

Goethe replies to Nail via comlink. "Understood. Hey, Walken, since you seem to be running command for this operation, how about plotting a route for me?"

"Acknowledged," Walken replies. In a few moments, schematics of the floor appear on the heads-up display interface on his glasses. A route to the elevator is highlighted. "We have hackers attempting to override an elevator lockout on another floor," Walken continues. "4509 is on his way to the Executive offices in hopes of intercepting Johnson. I suggest you meet him there."

Meanwhile, Nail and Seneth follow Donovan into the venting system. The men must crouch in a passage much too small for a troll to fit through.

Behind them, the door is torn off its heavy metal hinges as the troll Adept bursts into the room.

"Kill anything that moves in there!" comes a shouted command from a human in the hallway.

"With glee!" the troll says as he advances on the earth spirit. Seneth risks a quick backward glance as the group makes their escape. What he sees is terrifying. The troll is a monstrous version of the most bestial race of metahumanity. The beast has two six-inch tusks growing curved in a downward angle like impossibly large fangs. Its clothing is stretched taut over its enormous frame, and it's holding what appears to be a bone handled thrusting spike.

The earth spirit shrugs the ruined and collapsed door off its body. Seeing the troll advancing, the spirit hisses at him, "My first task is complete," before fading into the nether. The troll jabs the wicked spike through the snake's body, but a moment too late. The spirit has vanished.

Meanwhile, 4509 is heading up in the elevator. Both UO commandos with him are emerged in simsense attempting to hack the elevator. Suddenly, one of the men screams in agony. He rips the equipment off his head and scoots far away as possible from it.

"He was too strong!" the man shouts. "They have a technomancer protecting the system, stronger than we can hope to defeat."

The other man calmly removes his own simsense equipment. "You attacked recklessly. He didn't want to fight," he says. "I think he's an ally." The unhurt man looks at 4509, with his weapons ready. "The door will open soon, and I suggest you don't shoot whatever's on the other side. Synthcorp isn't controlling this elevator. Someone else is."

Abruptly, the elevator stops. As the doors open, 4509 readies his machine pistols. The elevator opens into a hallway, where a backpack-sized drone is hovering in plain view, non-threateningly. The drone has a single thin appendage, which it uses to gesture in a manner similar to a military salute. 4509 recognizes extremely advanced technology and AI programing powering this drone.

Through his comlink, 4509 can hear a robotic text-to-speech program narrating to him. "This unit is here to assist your attack. How may I be of service?"

Another voice comes over 4509's comlink. It's Walken, who has apparently been monitoring 4509 using an uplink from the cyborg's artificial eyes and comlink microphone.

"Careful, asset." Walken says. "That's not one of ours."

4509 takes a half-step forward, over the line of the doors so that he can get out in case his "ally" decides to send the elevator off without warning. He quickly sweeps the area with his ultrasound emitter and checks the drone for hidden weapons with his scanner. He keeps his firearms trained on the bot, not as quick to trust a stranger in the middle of a raid as the UO soldier seems to be. "Johnson's location."
