So I Got a Jerk Warning from Twickster

Can you kindly define "jerk?" I mean I think I see a bunch of them on the board. Do mods have special "jerk" training that makes them qualified to make a 'jerk call' or warning, if you will? It's all so confusing because even some of the mods look like "trolls", if not "jerks."

It's all very confusing. Well not so confusing but I do prefer denial.

Did I miss something in TOS?

If I get another subjective jerk warning from another mod does it mean I'm banned?

What is a non-jerk?

[quote=twickster]Dear cynyc,

You have received a warning at Straight Dope Message Board.

Reason:
-------
Being a jerk

I am giving you a warning for being a jerk. Your comments are completely out of line for an MPSIMS thread.

She's right. You were a jerk.

Yes, they go through a rigorous six week course so that when someone comes along and posts this:

Have you heard the one about the glow in the dark guy who went into a bar...

It wasn't cute but it was hilarious.

You seem to know your 'cute.' Isn't there a kiddie or Hallmark card board you could share these skills?
to attack someone trying to cheer up the guy with Alzheimer's in MPSIMS, they could use their highly honed skills of perception to realize that it is jerkish.

I agree that you were a jerk.

What you should have done is just told the person that they were coming across as a complete twat.

Then you would have got a mod note, not a warning.

Like the very beginning of the Registration Agreement that says "Don't be a jerk"? Yes, I'd say you did.

Twickster screws up a lot, but what's the saying, even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while?

This was a well-deserved acorn.

I don't want a mod note or a warning, so I'll just say I agree that was out of line for anything not posted in the Pit. Accept your warning. One is not a big deal. It'll only come around to bite you if you keep making posts like that.

Only problem I have with the modding is I think it is way too lenient. I'd have given you an instaban for that completely over the top rant. However, I really doubt you're going to be around here very much longer anyway, so buh-bye.

A well-deserved acorn, indeed. I'm no fan of her moderation but this was a gimme. You were way out of line, dude.

Which is why I, for one, support your bid for being a mod.

You don't even need the jerk rule for this--you went for repeated personal attacks. And, what's worse, it doesn't even make sense. You don't even say what you were mad about. And now you don't even see what was wrong with that, let alone apologize for what appears to be something you posted while drunk?

The only reason I'm not mad is that it's just so ridiculous.

Edit: and definite kudos to twickster. Heck, this is one case where I wouldn't care how harsh your language was.

Anyone else wondering how the "glow in the dark guy who went into a bar..." joke goes?

Or say that the POST had qualities of complete twat-ishness. Then you get off scot-free.

BAD: You are an asshole.
BETTER, BUT STILL BAD: You are acting like an asshole at this point in time.
GOOD: Your post has an assholish quality.

Damn right, I am. I googled it and got this thread. I did discover a website devoted to banjo jokes (of all things!). And this:

A guy enters a bar carrying an alligator. Says to the patrons, "Here’s a deal. I'll open this alligator's mouth and place my genitals inside. The gator will close his mouth for one minute, then open it, and I'll remove my unit unscathed. If it works, everyone buys me drinks." The crowd agrees. The guy drops his pants and puts his privates in the gator's mouth. Gator closes mouth. After a minute, the guy grabs a beer bottle and bangs the gator on the top of its head. The gator opens wide, and he removes his genitals unscathed. Everyone buys him drinks. Then he says: "I'll pay anyone $100 who's willing to give it a try." After a while, a hand goes up in the back of the bar. It's a woman. "I'll give it a try," she says, "but you have to promise not to hit me on the head with the beer bottle."

If it looks like a jerk, swims like a jerk and quacks like a jerk, then it probably
is a jerk.

First, I need to say that generally these are not "subjective."

"Being a jerk" is our generalized term for misbehavior. It's short and to the point, and avoids the 8 volumes of legal and technical refinement. Basically, we expect posters to be reasonably polite to other posters, and for discussions to be held in an atmosphere of sharing and learning. (The only exception is the forum called The Pit.) Violation of the basic rules -- such as leveling personal insults at other posters -- results in scoldings (Mod Notes) or Official Warnings.

Since we're all fallible (except Cecil Himself), we tolerate a certain number of scoldings and Official Warnings. After that, we get to suspension or banning. How many? It depends on the nature and severity. We've got a lower threshhold for (say) racist remarks directed at other posters, than we do for mild humorously pointed barbs. We also watch for repeat offenses: we expect people to learn from their prior mistakes, and not to repeat. So, if you have two or three warnings for the same offense over, say, two or three years, not to worry. If you have two or three warnings for the same offense over, say, two or three weeks... well, you probably aren't a good fit for these Message Boards.

If it is for a post as jerkish as the one you were warned for, I would certainly hope so.
