How many members have to die before the SDMB admins ask you to be a mod?

Let's see. Currently, about 136,00 members, around 6,000 active (Not sure what that means.)

Assuming active members means members with a recent posting history, I'm going to venture a guess around 5,500 members have to die before they would ask me.

How about you?

I don't think it works down a list like the Presidency. If you want to be a mod, ask them. You can't hear them <snerking> on the internet anyway.

Really? I always thought they asked you.

I'm not going to ask, but still.

There are local events (usually held in your neighborhood SDMB coordinator's basement) in which you can compete in certain trials. The survivors are allowed to continue to the state and then regional tournaments. Then super-regionals are used to winnow out the weaker contestants so that only a favored few can compete on a national basis.

So, you have to ask yourself, "Self, do I have what it takes to become an SDMB moderator? Well, do I, punk?!?"

Good luck and remember, that waiver will stand up in court. Trust me on this one.

Do these involve turning liposuctioned fat into designer soaps and high explosives by any chance?

They'd shut the place down before asking me to be a mod.

I was asked, ten years ago or so, before they really knew me all that well. Because I actually like this place I felt obligated to abstain.

Don't ast, don't tell. They don't ask me, so I don't have to tell them no. I don't ask them, so they don't have to tell me no.

I don't see death changing any of that. Unless it's my death. Then I intend to come back and lock all the zombie threads.

If drafted, I will not run; if nominated, I will not accept; if elected, I will not serve. Thank you anyway. Seriously, I am honored. Good night.

Um, all of them? But by then, I won't want to be a mod because every other mod died! It must be cursed!

Besides, if every member were dead, I'd probably have started posting somewhere more happening a long time ago. Don't die, everyone!

How many mods are there anyway? Are there a certain number per forum? Is there a hierarchy?

It's quite simple to become a mod here. In fact, it's so simple I'm wondering why no one has done it before. All one must do is buy the Chicago Reader.

You think the kvetching over in ATMB is bad now? Try installing an unashamed revolutionary socialist as a mod (Great Debates, anyone?) and watch the fireworks.

If I asked whether they'd like me to be a mod, they'd probably laugh loud enough that I'd hear them in the pre-Internet, pre-telephone, etc. manner.

I think it works like this:

When there is an opening for a mod, the current mods and admins will select one candidate for the position. That candidate then has 36 hours to submit an application.

Simple enough? Well, here's where it gets tricky. The candidate is not notified in any way, but if said candidate does not apply within the 36 hours, said candidate is placed on the permanently ineligible list.

To further complicate things, if a non-candidate submits an application, that person is also placed on the permanently ineligible list.

And, of course, you do not talk about Mod Club.

Just in case anyone is getting ideas -- the OP asked how many members would have to die, not how many mods.

How many threads must a guest post in
Before you know they're no fraud?
And how many posts must a Charter create
Before newbs are instantly awed?
Oh, how many members must a Doper outlive
Before you can call one a Mod?

The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.
