Coke, asparagus and kidney stones

In 1972 I was hospitalised with kidney stones. They prescribed beer. Truly. A couple of times a day the drugs cart would come around the wards. Everybody else would get pills and I'd get a couple of cold beers. I've been an admirer of modern medicine ever since.

Well, since basically, you're trying to piss the stone out, drinking lots of water or pee-inducing liquid (like beer) makes some sense. My son had a kidney stone the other week, and the doc basically said drink lots of water until it passes.
