Pretty sure everybody sitting for a state bar has to go through a "character and fitness" check before being certified to take the bar. Despite the name, its not much more than a background check - i.e. any arrests, DUI's, incidents of scholastic dishonesty, etc. Fortunately, it doesn't require soul schmears or there would be far fewer attorneys out there.

Asshole Andrew Shirvell has been ordered to pay $4.5 million to the gay student he attacked as a Michigan assistant attorney general (he's since been fired).

One more for the good guys!

I find it interesting that the AP story you linked only calls Shirvell's blog an "anti-gay blog."

The blog was called Chris Armstrong Watch! What would he have had to call his blog in order for them to recognize it targeted one guy?

Armstrong sued Shirvell.

Armstrong was willing to settle for an apology and a retraction. Shirvell, who represented himself, declined and held his ground that his blog was a freedom of speech issue. The jury awarded Armstrong 4.5 million. Shirvelle says he's unemployed and there's no way he can pay that amount.

Wasn't Shirvell a lawyer?
