I thought I'd have a problem with going by merit (assuming you'd bunch the top players together and the poorer players together), but this league is for fun - and giving the poor performers last year a chance to beat up on each other and compete for a playoff spot is actually a great idea. I like it.

I'm essentially against what amount to arbitrary or random divisions - I'd rather just get rid of divisions. I wanted to give them a try when yahoo allowed them, but after a couple of years of essentially random divisions I decided meh.
But if we were to use the divisions in some logical way, it could be very cool. If we reorganized along some logical lines, it could be interesting. If we organized by average finish since the start, and did it again next year (or just do it based on last year's ratings) then it's interesting for competition. The top division - full of the 5 best - becomes prestigious, and the bottom division becomes shameful or at least full of newbies. To win the top division requires you to beat the best the league has to offer, but at least 1 player from the bottom division will go to the playoffs, creating a parity of sorts. It works even better if I set up the schedule so that everyone plays everyone in their division twice. Geographic divisions make sense in real sports obviously for logistical reasons but I find them uncompelling for this. Team fandom is maybe a little more logical, but I'm guessing we're a scattered bunch where there won't be any clean solution there. So anyway, I propose we take the average finish of each player and then order the divisions that way, with new players starting at the bottom. |

If divisions are going to be created based on previous performance, then they should be selected in precisely the opposite way—in order to ensure that everyone has a similar strength of schedule. So, for example, one division would comprise the #1, #5, #9, #13, and #17 players; the next division would comprise #2, #6, #10, #14, and #18; and so on. Firstly, i don't think that the people who have finished near the bottom previously (and i'm one of them) should have the benefit of playing a "weaker" schedule and thus getting a better chance to make the playoffs. I'm happy to compete against people who have done well. Second, to be quite honest, i do this for fun. I do my best to pick a strong team, i make trades, i keep on top of my roster from one week to the next, and i make a concerted effort to win each week, but in the end i really don't care where i finish. It's just about a bit of fun. I know, Senorbeef, that part of the whole game for you is trash-talking about how great you are and how you deserved to win because your team consistently scored the most points and how you've been in the top three (or whatever) every year and how awesome is that. But that doesn't interest me very much, and if you're going to have an "All the awesome guys" division and a "Point and laugh at the losers division," you can find someone else to take my team. |

Well that's unnecesarily dramatic. Threatning to quit the league a few days before the draft because - what, exactly? Being in a meaningless and random division works for you, but being in a division with people who've performed similarly to you is a grave injustice?
I can't imagine any way of organizing divisions, including a "most likely to be a child molester" vote and making the top division, that could really justify quitting over it. Could someone make a case for arbitrary or semi-arbitrary (like vaguely geographical) divisions? Because if they're meaningless I'd rather just lose them altogether. |

And before you accuse me of just wanting to gloat, I proposed a similar system in the dynasty league, even specifically mentioning the prestige of the top division, when I finished in last place that year. I just think it's a good idea that makes the league more meaningful. I don't need it to gloat. I'm going to do that anyway.

My suggestion for arranging the divisions is precisely the opposite of "meaningless and random." I would sort divisions with a view to giving everyone in the league a roughly equal strength of schedule, based on prior order of finishing. It is based on exactly the same idea as your arrangement (i.e., on past performance), but is actually more fair to everyone. As for getting rid of divisions altogether, i'd be perfectly fine with that too. |

OK, having cooled down a little since the other day, i will do the same. I still don't really like the proposal under consideration, but i've already said that i'm only playing for fun, so what do i care if i'm in the losers' division?
Of course, the type of people who gloat when they win are also often the type of people who make excuses when they lose. If we change the arrangement, and someone from the losers' division happens to win it all, i'm betting that the next step will be a few people in the winners' division complaining about how that person had such an easy schedule, and how they didn't really deserve to win.

I guess another way to organize divisions is time spent in the league, but that won't line up neatly. I was just trying to come with some justification to organize them - something logical and elegant - otherwise I'd prefer to throw them out as basically meaningless.
I wasn't able to move the draft back to the previous time - everything after 2pm or so is booked up solid. |

Can i ask what it is about my own proposal that apparently fails your "logical and elegant" test?
It organizes divisions based on past performance, which is exactly what you wanted to do. It also has the advantage of evening out the strength of schedule, so that everyone plays about the same number of good, average, and poor teams. Admittedly, you could arrive at a similar result by eliminating divisions altogether and simply ensuring that each team has a roughly similar schedule. But, in the absence of actual physical factors like travel distance, which was part of the rationale for divisions in real sports, it seems to me that an equal-strength-of-schedule division system is at least as logical and elegant as any other. |

Your proposal is essentially to homogenizes the league in a way that renders divisions pointless, so I sort of count it as support as just elimination divisions.

I am fine either way and I really see nothing wrong with the divisions. Of course, I am one of the few people in a division that has legitimate identity (GO GIANTS!). To be honest, I am having a hard time figuring out why anyone really cares about divisions vs none. Looking back, no one really got screwed over because of divisions. Points vs. Head-to-head I can understand, but the divisions are a nice way to organize a 20-team league.

What was our waiver policy on Weds or Thurs games? No picking them up until they come out of weekend waivers?
Also, after the draft, it looks like players go on waivers for 2 days. Theoretically I'd suggest that was a fine waiver period for the players on the dallas vs giants wednesday game, but on further thought, that might cause confusion since that information would have to go out to 20 people for a one time exception. |

I'm trying to figure out the new divisions and new team names but I'm missing something.
The vets division is intact - Exploding Pancakes (SenorBeef), Scissor Me Timbers (munch), Curry Porkrinds (tds1273), Return of Ryan Leaf (mhendo), Phoenix Redbirds (dalej42) The old semi-newbies lost 2 people, Hamlet and Brute Squad (Only Mostly Dead), leaving up by three (Taber), Evil Monkey (MTRG), unrelated siblings (uncle brother walker) Newbies lost Hey There Fancypants (MrSquishy), leaving Not Sure (brickbacon), Garcon's Cedilia (friend of MrSquishy), CMFD (now Overly Sentimental), Living Through Them (Gray Ghost) Giants division lost The Gusterhoids (Justin Bailey) and Varlos, leaving Court Jesters (d_odds), frosted lightning (Frosted Glass), and No Use For A Name II (Retrovertigo) New entrants are 9 inch neils (RNATB), The Fleas (Wilson), Cobra Kai (Boozahol Squid, PI), Rough and Tumblrs (Enalzi), Red Hoculi Peppers (Darth Sensitive) In previous years we've only had little turnover and just plugged people in as replacements in the divisions but we've had 5 changes this year, which mixes things up. Having a Giants Fan division losing 2 eliminates the original (and arbitrary) purpose, so it'll be sort of weird to keep it. Let me try organizing it a few ways and see if anything becomes elegant. |

Okay, with 5 new people it makes some sense to put them in their own division. So then I looked at how long people have been in the league. We've got 8 who've been here all 3 years, and 7 more who've been in for 2. So I figured we could redo divisions based on time in the league - but necesarily one division would have to have 3 third year players and 2 second year players. So I needed some way to break the tie to sort it, so I used average finish as a tiebreaker, but time spent in the league is the primary criteria.
All in all, it seems elegant enough. Not perfect, but enough people had left that plugging them in to the old structure would've been a fudging on top of a fudging. Division 1 - all three year players Exploding Pancakes (SenorBeef) Scissor Me Timbers (Munch) No Use For A Name II (RetroVertigo) Frosted Lightning (Frosted Glass) Curry Porkrinds (tds1273) Division 2 - 3 three year players, 2 two year Court Jesters (d_odds), 3 year Unrelated Siblings (uncle brother walker), 3 year Phoenix Redbirds (dalej42), 3 year Up By Three (Taber), 2 year Not Sure (brickbacon), 2 year Division 3 - remaining 2 year players Garcon's Cedillia (friend of MrSquishy) Evil Monkey (MTRG) Overly Sentimental formerly CMFD - (Overly Sentimental/Chuck) Living Through Them - formerly Sizzurp Sippers (Gray Ghost) Return of Ryan Leaf (mhendo) Division 4 - new this year Cobra Kai (Boozahol Squid, PI) - actually was with us in year 1, so has 1 year experience 9 Inch Neils (Really Not All That Bright) The Fleas (Wilson) Rough and Tumblrs (Enalzi) Red Hoculi Peppers (Darth Sensitive) Since we were going to have a really hard time finding any sort of logical geographic/fan based solution, this seems like a reasonably elegant way to come up with something somewhat meaningful. I like the result. Any comments? Last edited by SenorBeef; 09-03-2012 at 06:05 PM. |

It doesn't really matter to me one way or the other.
In my irl leagues we have always divided up divisions according to draft order. Even and odd numbers split. But like I said it doesn't matter to me, even if we eliminate them completely. |

Woops, I searched by "up by three" rather than taber when I was making the list. I'll adjust it so that you and Curry Porkrinds swap divisions.
We actually have a 3 way tie at average finish between Taber, Munch, and myself. Cause, you know, 15th in year one, leading scorer, blah blah. Still bitter. Division 1 - all three year players Exploding Pancakes (SenorBeef) Scissor Me Timbers (Munch) No Use For A Name II (RetroVertigo) Frosted Lightning (Frosted Glass) Up By Three - Formerly Donte's Torino (Taber), 3 year Division 2 - 4 three year players, 1 two year Curry Porkrinds (tds1273) Court Jesters (d_odds), 3 year Unrelated Siblings (uncle brother walker), 3 year Phoenix Redbirds (dalej42), 3 year Not Sure (brickbacon), 2 year Division 3 - remaining 2 year players Garcon's Cedillia (friend of MrSquishy) Evil Monkey (MTRG) Overly Sentimental formerly CMFD - (Overly Sentimental/Chuck) Living Through Them - formerly Sizzurp Sippers (Gray Ghost) Return of Ryan Leaf (mhendo) Division 4 - new this year Cobra Kai (Boozahol Squid, PI) - actually was with us in year 1, so has 1 year experience 9 Inch Neils (Really Not All That Bright) The Fleas (Wilson) Rough and Tumblrs (Enalzi) |

Okay, remember that this draft takes over 3 hours, and we can cut down on the time by cutting out useless wasted time, so I am going to hammer you guys about it with a stick until people stop doing it. Do not waste a lot of time with nominations.
They happen in order, just like in a regular draft. You can see how many spots to go until your nomination is there. You should be ready to instantly nominate a player. But even if you get caught by surprise by it being your turn, unless it's the last few picks when we're all trying to get $1 kickers and shit, just nominate anyone. Nominate the top guy in the list. It doesn't matter. It's not that important. It's more important that you not waste 20 seconds scrambling to nominate someone (which, after the 100th time it happens, becomes a half hour). So be ready when it's your turn, have a guy queued up, and even if you fuck that up, and you aren't ready, just nominate anyone for a dollar. |

Draft took 4 hours, which is longer than usual. We had some chronically slow people that added unnecesary time unfortunately. Next year we're going to have to go with an earlier start time - this is just impractically late.
Of course not everyone had to stick around for the 4 hours - many were done before that. Anyway, good draft, remember to set your players for the NYG/DAL game. |

I think what happens (at least what happens with me) is people simply stop paying attention. When I hear the drafted sound, I just look to see who's next and decide if I'm going to bid, or once the bid goes out of my range that I would pay, just stop watching until the next draftee. Sometimes, I won't notice immediately that it is my turn to select.
That said, I don't think it was ever more than a few seconds (10 tops) before I selected before going on auto at the end. I always had a cue available. |

I know everyone said everyone would hate their teams, but they're wrong. I love my team; I wouldn't have been grossed out by it in a 14-team league (other than my bench).

Well, my plan going in was to grab one top-tier player, but I panicked when I saw how the prices were starting to rise and grabbed Ray Rice too. I'm content with my team, but I have pretty much no bench. Time will tell if it will pay off.

I'm somewhat happy with my team, though it's really a game of injury roulette with a league this big. I probably should have grabbed one more RB (Like Royston...damn it.), and a backup QB, instead of the smorgasbord of receivers I have. Well, that's what trading is for.
Thanks mhendo for the list of draftees. I've taken it and sorted it by position of importance, then by $$$, then alphabetically. The formatting is wonky, but I think you should be able to cut and paste it into Excel. For me, one of the most fun parts of this League are the pre-mortem posts and hopefully sorting this data will help get those out. Code:

I actually like my team. I'll go in to specifics later, but my strategy was to also take 1 "stud", 2-3 mid level players, and then fill in the pieces with good value. I think I really only overpaid significantly on 1 player, so it could be a lot worse.
As deep as this league drafts, the playoff teams will likely be the ones that don't have an injury bug decimate their team. |

I'll do a recap of my team.
QB: Matthew Stafford (DET), Brady Quinn (KC) Going in, I really wanted a top 5 QB. Historically, it's the top QBs in this league that push teams over the top, and I wasn't going to be banking on the likes of Josh Freeman again. Having a backup was an extremely low priority - for if Stafford goes down, there aren't any backups at that point that are going to get me into the playoffs. Stafford, if healthy, should have a very big year. RB: Jamaal Charles (KC), Jacquizz Rodgers (ATL), Evan Royster (WAS), Delone Carter (IND), Taiwan Jones (OAK) I also wanted at least one top RB, which Charles fits into nicely. I'm not concerned in the least by Hillis, and Charles is a fantastic PPR pick (even at half a point). Rodgers gets a big boost by returning some kicks, and should see plenty of touches with Michael Turner having been run into the ground for the last 3 years. Royster is listed as the starter in WAS, but we all know that's Shanahannigans. Even still, for $3 he's worth a shot. Carter is a $2 flyer that Donald Brown will be exposed as the shitty blocker and Andrew Luck liability that he is. Jones is a great flyer in case the injury-prone McFadden goes down. WR: Antonio Brown (PIT), Davone Bess (MIA), Brandon Stokley (DEN), Leonard Hankerson (WAS), Golden Tate (SEA) Considering the prices that WRs were going for even late in the draft, Brown at WR18 is pretty decent value (some have him much higher than the current ADP). He's not Brandon Lloyd value, but I'm happy with the pick. Things deterioate pretty quickly after that. Bess is a 4th WR on most teams, and he's my #2. I'm hoping his return yardage will bridge that gap a bit. Stokley's a gamble just to get touches, as is Tate and Hankerson. I hope one of them pans out. TE: Rob Gronkowski (NE) I'm not hoping for 2011 numbers - but I am hoping for a very small elite group of top tier TEs to put points up - otherwise my big spending will have been wasted. In a 20 team league, tiers are everything, and he needs to be in rarified air to make this work. K: Garrett Hartley (NO) I'll take the kicker from a high-scoring offense for a buck all day long. DEF: Minnesota Vikings There were a few defenses that I was targeting, and Minnesota was not one of them. They play Jacksonville on Week 1, so maybe we'll see what they can do. Big Picture: I have, in my opinion, three studs in Stafford, Charles and Gronk. Brown may rise up, but he was a reach. All of my RBs have the potential to be solid contributors, and hopefully trade bait for better WR upgrades. My special teams won't harm me too much - I really like my playoff chances. Good draft - just wish it could have been paced faster. |

Quote:
Briefly, my team: QB: Tom Brady ($48): In the top tier of proven QB's (though Stafford and Newton may get there this year; who knows?) and the cheapest of them. I'm happy. But I obviously need a backup. RB: Ahmad Bradshaw ($20), Peyton Hillis ($20), Rashad Mendenhall ($15): I'm very happy with the value here and I have faith that Mendenhall will get his starting job back very soon, if not in Week 1. I like Bradshaw and Hillis at $20, a lot more than some of the bigger names at 40-60. With injuries, I need a backup, and soon. Going to be hard to find one in this league. WR: Percy Harvin ($34), Austin Collie ($7), Devin Hester ($6), Jacoby Ford ($2), Louis Murphy ($2), Ryan Broyles ($2), Keshawn Martin ($1): One stud, especially with return yardage, at a price comparable to lesser-projected receivers. And a whole lot of lottery tickets, though Collie and Hester should be serviceable. Ford should get good return yardage when his foot gets better, I'm hoping Broyles's knee allows him to be one of Stafford's favorites, and I just had a wild hair in bidding $2 for Murphy. I am bullish on Martin, mainly because the Texans don't really have anybody with his speed and elusiveness. I think he's the new WR#2 there, not Posey or Jean, and especially not Kevin Martin. We'll see. TE: Aaron Hernandez ($31), Joel Dreesen ($4): Paid a ton for Hernandez, but he's comparable to Gronk (who I think is going to have a big return to reality from 2011), and he's $11 cheaper. I hate guessing week to week what the TE is going to do, and would rather just plug in a guy that will give me consistent production. There aren't many that will (8?) but I think Hernandez will be one of them. Graham I think is going to be the monster of this bunch---the Texans could not consistently stop him in preseason---but he came with a monster price tag ($47). Sigh. Dreesen is going to be what Tamme is supposed to be, I predict. Heck of an athlete, though obviously not in Gronk's/Graham's class. Good lottery ticket at $4, and may be productive enough to start in the Flex. DEF: Kansas City ($4). Really didn't want to spend $4 on them, but it was late and there weren't many other options. I think they'll have a resurgence, and for the same reasons as Minnesota: Cassel, et al, won't be as incompetent with Charles and Moeaki coming back, which will lessen the pressure on the D. Probably should have grabbed Baltimore or the Giants though. <Crosses fingers> K: Shayne Graham ($1): The Texans should score a bit, and they play indoors. He's a veteran and that's really all I can expect from a kicker. The draft did take forever and a day. Pretty needlessly too. |

Eli Manning NYG QB $37
If Drew Brees went outside of what I wanted to pay (which he did by $1, but it was early and I still had discipline), I was going to pony up for the homer pick. I think he went at about the right price unless even years are the years he throws 20+ picks Trent Richardson Cle RB $38 Starts my week 1 woes, as he might not start. Should be a good get Frank Gore SF RB $29 Healthy? Who knows. Not much pre-season play, but did practice with first squad Mikel LeShoure Det RB $12 Out two games. Looks promising, but we'll see Rashad Jennings Jac RB $10 Hopefully my week 1 workhorse. My theory is that holdouts tend to get injured due to trying too much too fast. If proven true, this could be the steal of the year Greg Jennings GB WR $39 The only bad thing about Jennings at this price is that Rodgers has too many frikkin' targets Kenny Britt Ten WR $23 Sits out week 1. Should be good for him. Risky pick Anthony Fasano Mia TE $1 Bear Pascoe NYG TE $1 If either of these schmoes gets 2+ catches per game, I'd be surprised. I actually missed bidding on who I really wanted as I wasn't paying attention. Carolina Car DEF $1 Oakland Oak DEF $1 St. Louis StL DEF $1 Already waived two of these for players who will hopefully start week 1. Lawrence Tynes NYG K $1 It's a kicker. It's a homer pick. Get over it. Also have two other scrubs at WR. I thought most of the WR category was overbid. I have a tendency to be wrong about such things. If the Giants running game is similar to how it was last year, Manning is going to be my work horse. Richardson and Gore are not bad, and LeShoure and R. Jennings are excellent alternatives. G. Jennings and Britt can hopefully provide some points in the WR slot. DEF and TE were AFK picks. As long as they aren't negative points, I won't complain too much. |

I put the picks into Excel, and added a filter so anyone can play with them anyway they like. It can be found in my Google Docs

After the draft last night, I thought my team was a world beater, but in the cold light of morning, I only think it is pretty good. I feel like my team is really well balanced despite having paid for 2 studs. The only problem is I don't really like either of the studs I got
QB: Dalton $8, Palmer $9 I really like how this ended up, though I will have to play "guess who to start" week to week. WR: Larry Fitzgerald $44, Demaryius Thomas $24, Darrius Heyward Bey $13, Nate Burleson $4, Steve Smith $4 I feel like I paid for Fitzgerald's name more than his expected production, but I only paid $5 more than the yahoo average, so I don't feel too bad. Amazing value on Thomas and Bey. Other two are just guys. RB: Ryan Mathews $45, Beanie Wells $12, Lagarrote Blount $8, Ronnie Hillman $7, Jonathan Dwyer $3 This is where it gets hairy. If Wells loses the starting job, I'm in serious trouble. Mathews is probably not $45 of value, and I definitely should have spent the $25 for a guy like Bradshaw or Green-Ellis instead of gambling $8 on a series of backups. Dwyer should fill in for Mathews fine week 1. TE: Kyle Rudolph $11 Massively overpaid here, but he was the last decent TE on the board and there wasn't anyone left that I wanted to get in a bidding war over Defense: Baltimore $7 First year I paid for a defense, we'll see what that's like Kicker: no one cares Last edited by Taber; 09-05-2012 at 12:59 PM. |
