I put together an interesting chart. It shows how many players people drafted that they nominated themselves. It also includes a column that takes out any $1 players you bought.

1. (15) Chris Johnson (Ten - RB) $51
I fully expect Johnson to be back in top-notch form this season and it pays to have a productive back in this league. 2. (65) DeSean Jackson (Phi - WR) $31 Jackson is going to surprise a lot of people and really erase last season from memory. As a receiver, he is still a beast and Vick works well with him at number 1. 3. (77) Jermichael Finley (GB - TE) $23 Finley may have had some preseason injury issues, but he will definitely get catches when he gets back into it. 4. (85) Alex Smith (SF - QB) $11 No idea really. In theory, his numbers should go up this season with the new offense set up. Still, as long as he doesn't have a bunch of turnovers I will be happy with this pick up. I also cannot complain about the price of this pick at all. 5. (126) Isaac Redman (Pit - RB) $14 Not thrilled with this pick looking back. Hopefully he will surprise me until Mendenhall comes back. 6. (127) Mark Ingram (NO - RB) $12 Ingram should prove himself as a solid flex option when the Saints square up against weaker run Defenses. He will get scores even though he is in a carousel backfield. 7. (135) Santonio Holmes (NYJ - WR) $13 He's a receiver for the Jets. Being at the top of their list at least means someone will throw the ball to him. 8. (165) Green Bay (GB - DEF) $5 Solid defense and I would hate to basically toss this position in a league of this size. Every little bit will help and GB will provide me with some nice DEF numbers. 9. (167) Michael Crabtree (SF - WR) $16 Coming into the season with no injury issues should help Crabtree build off of a pretty solid finish to last season. It is also going to be nice to see how he works with Moss lined up on the other side. I expect him to get some solid opportunities. 10. (180) Alshon Jeffery (Chi - WR) $6 Pretty excited to see what he can do this season. Definitely worth the price considering the potential. 11. (182) Coby Fleener (Ind - TE) $4 Hopefully, catching passes from his college QB will help him do big things as a rookie. 12. (187) Ryan Fitzpatrick (Buf - QB) $11 Nice backup...why did he cost as much as my starter? 13. (245) Neil Rackers (Was - K) $1 14. (286) Emmanuel Sanders (Pit - WR) $1 15. (294) Bernard Pierce (Bal - RB) $1 |

This was my first ever auction league in Fantasy Football. I didn't have much of a strategy - not to have any money left over (duh), pay big for a couple of players I really wanted, and to not go crazy on a top QB. From reading what I have, looks like the third one is against conventional wisdom.
QB - Robert Griffin III ($15), Christian Ponder ($7) Well, this is not what I expected... I thought I was just bidding up RGIII, I was fully expecting to bid twice that later for one of the Mannings. When I got RGIII for what I think is a reasonable price, I changed gears. I knew I wanted a backup, and Ponder's OK at that price. RB - Matt Forte ($51), Adrian Peterson ($40), Bernard Scott ($8), Montario Hardesty ($2), Chris Ivory ($1) Forte is a player I targeted, and I got him for what I think is a reasonable price. AP.... could be great value at that price, could be a massive overpay. Health is everything with these two. No decent backup. Did I really spend $8 on Bernard Scott??? Hardesty is a good gamble I think. WR - Jeremy Maclin ($30), Brandon Lloyd ($27), Stevie Johnson ($18), Steve Breaston ($1) Love those top three. Maclin I may have overpaid for, but I love Lloyd and Stevie at those prices. Lloyd was a top target of mine. I really wanted Hakeem Nicks, but he came up before I had a good feel of the WR market. I should have kept bidding on him rather than spending so much on Maclin later. No bench at all here, obviously. TE - Heath Miller ($2), Martellus Bennett ($2) Meh. Not bad for four dollars. Heath is probably over the hill, and Bennett may not be all that. K - Rob Bironas; DEF/ST - San Diego (both at $1) Whatever. Wasn't going to spend anything at these positions. Final analysis - I'm OK with the team - I have a solid top six, assuming AP is healthy (big assumption). I really, really should have done what it took to get Gerhardt. I don't have any good options at flex, however. Will need to keep my eye out for quality in-season pickups. |

Ugh, the autopicker was nice enough to draft me a good team for 2008. I will have to make sure I attend the draft in full next year, auction drafts just don't work on autopick.
QB: Jay Cutler $23, John Skelton $3. Not a bad price for 2 starters. Cutler could be quite a steal at $23, but he's been on the 'should break out' list for how many years now? Skelton is a starter, and at least I'm always on top of the Cardinals QB situation. RB: Toby Gerhard $10, Doug Martin $32, Michael Bush $10, Tim Hightower $4. Well, I probably overpaid for Martin, but at least I've got 2 starters and an interesting RB in Bush. Hightower might end up on a team if there is an injury in the 1st week. WR: Roddy White $39, Jordy Nelson $36, Michael Floyd $8, Terrell Owens $1. I love having White and Nelson. I wouldn't have taken Owens for a $1, I think he's done. TE: Brandon Pettigrew $20, Todd Heap $1. I love Pettigrew, I wouldn't have probably drafted a backup if it wasn't for the autopicker. D/ST: Buffalo $6 I wanted them for the games they've got against the Jets and Dolphins. Plus, I figure they've got some late season games in crap weather. K: Yes, the autopicker drafted me 2 kickers that aren't on active rosters right now! |

I was willing to bet my remaining $4-5 on Bennett. I think he'll work with Coughlin/Manning. Manning likes the TE and Bennett is really all he'll have. But I was half dozing by that point, and missed his nomination.

That second list, with all the positions in cost order, was what I was looking for, thanks. But would you mind also posting each team's results in one post for future reference?
Self review: I deviated from my strategy significantly this year, which will end up costing me. I don't know how much I should detail my strategy lest you all use my fantasy genius against me. But in general terms, I prefer to seek value in the middle of the draft after the big expensive guys are gone and build the most efficient dollar per point team I can manage, and it's worked for me in the past. QB - Aaron Rodgers $58, Ryan Tannehill $1 One of the things I've consistently done in this league was to try to find a value QB who could maybe do 20-30% less than the best QBs but cost 1/4th as much, but every year I ended up regretting it, and often trading for a better QB. The relative values of QBs to the rest of the positions in this league changes due to the scarcity at the position relative to normal leagues. The fact that QBs are the top absolute scorers become worth more - you can't count on easily grabbing a top 12 QB like you generally can in smaller leagues, and the dropoff is steep from there. QBs gain in relative terms due to their absolute score generation in a league where replacement level players are much worse and reliable point scorers are scarcer. That said, it makes the top QBs more valuable relative to the top RBs, but I don't know if I had to really go out and spend a ton for Rodgers. In previous years I'd have gone for Vick at $29, Cutler at $23, and Roethlisberger at $18 as much better point per dollar values. I'm not sure yet if I've made a mistake. But in terms of reliable, high ceiling points production, Rodgers has got to be the single most valuable player in the league. Tannehill - well, I was down to $1 picks and in this league not everyone can draft a backup QB. Getting a starter for $1 is a good thing even if he's going to suck. There's at least some upside there. WR - AJ Green $36, Julio Jones $35, Kendall Wright $7, DeVier Posey $1. My receiving corps is young, speculative, and not that cheap for what it is. High ceilings, risky floors, only okay value. In the past I'd probably draft one $30 receiver and try to get a bunch of $15-22 guys. Not sure if I made the right call here. I'm not even sure I'm in love with my expensive guys, but based on the WR market at the time they seemed reasonable values. Posey is a pretty decent lottery ticket for when Andre Johnson gets hurt. My guys definitely have upside and chance to surprise, but maybe I should've gone lower risk and diversified more by picking up more $20 guys. TE Vernon Davis $21, Jordan Cameron $1 I like Davis this year - SF's receivers will clear out space for Davis to work, but Smith isn't good enough to get the ball to the deep receivers consistently, which is the ideal circumstances for Davis - room to run, and lots of targets. I think he's going to be the 4th TE this year, with the upside to go even higher, so pretty good value. Jordan Cameron is a lottery ticket - he's one of the basketball player converts that could surprise. RB Johnathan Stewart $16, Ryan Williams $11, Isaiah Pead $6, Alfred Morris $3, Javon Ringer $1. I list the RB position late because that's how I ended up addressing it in the draft. Just not enough resources spent here, I was hoping I'd dig up some value very late, but when the time came, everyone else was chasing after all the same potential sleepers and I couldn't do much. Johnathan Stewart is pretty solid value at $16, Ryan Williams likely becomes a starting RB and therefore decent value at $11, but the upside there is pretty limited. I'm clearly just patching in whatever I can manage at that point. Isaiah Pead can be nothing or maybe he'll be a Darren Sproles type presence in St. Louis. And at Steven Jackson has a decent chance of breaking down this year. Alfred Morris is a low cost ticket into the Shanahan Running Back Minigame. I don't like playing it, but Morris looked good so far, and he's exactly the sort of guy that springs up out of nowhere under Shanahan. Good gamble. Javon Ringer is a pure lottery ticket for a Chris Johnson injury. K/DST David Akers $2, Denver $1 Not much to say. Akers was far and away the best kicker last year and has a decent shot of repeating, so I'm willing to spend 1 extra dollar to pick him up. Denver was basically the last of the $1 defenses available. I don't like them much, but they've got potential. Overall, I like this team, but not as much as I've liked my past teams. My RB position is just too cobbled together. But a few things go my way - Green and Jones improve on their rookie season, Rodgers stays healthy, and one of those running backs becomes a solid starter, and my team is in good shape. I'm not quite sure what to make of my team, in some ways. I think there's some real possibilities there, but i also fucked a few things up, due partly to not paying attention.
Anyway: QB - Jake Locker $5, Mark Sanchez $5 Two QBS, neither one a stud, but neither a complete scrub either. Sanchez was 10th in Fantasy value among QBs last year, although i don't expect him to be that high again. He gets killed by his turnovers - interceptions and fumbles. Locker's a gamble, but i thought that the chance he would have a good year made him (possibly) worth the money. He is, at worst, a decent backup option in a league where those can be hard to come by. RB - Arian Foster $58, Maurice Jones-Drew $42, Daniel Thomas $4 Not to much to say about Foster. If he doesn't get hurt, he should put up great numbers. A few people last night were of the opinion that I got him for a decent price (based on the size of the league, and his Yahoo valuation, i expected him to go for $65-70). Still, i wonder whether it might not have been better to spend less on a less valuable player, in exchange for more depth. Jones-Drew could end up being a bargain, or the exact opposite. He rushed for over 1600 last year, but is starting as a third-down back this week, and while he's officially in front of Jennings on the depth chart, most commentators think that Jennings is really the main guy, for now at least. Thomas isn't great, and even if he gets the same number of yards as last year, he's not a guy they go to close to the line, so he's not likely to bring much in the way of TDs. WR - Wes Welker $38, Jon Baldwin $7, Doug Baldwin $6, Andre Roberts $2, Lee Evans $2 I'd be incredibly happy if Welker repeated his 2011 performance, but even if he regresses a bit to his usual numbers, he's still a solid pick. Probably not the best value in the league, but i'm glad i've got him. The two Baldwins and Roberts will make up the rest of the WR corp. Doug is solid, and Jon could have an upside that will make him a good pickup. Roberts obviously won't be a target anywhere near as often as Fitzgerald, but i hope he can improve on last year's number in yards and TDs. Evans was a waste of money. He's not even on a roster, and was NA when i bid. My fault for not paying attention, but i also think that Yahoo should make it impossible to nominate NA players in the draft. TE - Dustin Keller $8, Ed Dickson $4 Pretty decent here, although two was maybe overkill. Keller's a solid, consistent TE, and if his numbers keep improving the way they have over the past couple of years, i'll be happy. Not sure i needed a backup, but Dickson might be worth having, maybe even as trade material. K/DST Stephen Gostkowski $4, Detroit $5, Arizona $1 Happy enough with Gostkowski and Detroit, although probably should have paid less for them. Ended up with Arizona late because i nominated them without thinking, and of course no-one else was going to pay more than $1 for last year's 22nd-ranked defense. My fault for not paying attention. If i have a regret about this draft, it's that i should have spent a bit more on a more solid, mid-level WR and/or RB. I ended up with $9 left over, in addition to paying too much for my K/DST combo, so i could have done better. I guess i might end up regretting the route i went with my QB, but there are worse out there than Sanchez, and the backup could also contribute. Last edited by mhendo; 09-05-2012 at 05:40 PM. |

Can we include FAAB money in trade deals?

Yeah I don't see why not. I think we created that rule back with Court Jesters was trying to build up his team when he autodrafted via FAAB dollars, so I think it's still in effect.

Since everyone else is doing a self-review... I wasn't kidding when I said I wouldn't hate this team in a 14-team league. I've got shit for depth, but I am genuinely happy with every starter.
QB - Matt Schaub $19, Blaine Gabbert $3 Schaub is a top 10 fantasy quarterback with one knock: health. I was willing to spend big on Ryan Fitzpatrick given that, but not what he went for. So I took Gabbert, who... has a job, and might surprise me with a greatly upgraded receiving corps and a rusty ball-hogging tailback. I bet he won't, though. I was willing to go cheap at QB given that this format basically forces you to skimp at some positions. RB - DeMarco Murray $42, Fred Jackson $34, Kevin Smith $17, Bilal Powell $3, Jahvid Best $2 Here's where the money went, and boy did I get some bang for my buck. All three of my primary backs could end up in the top 10, and two probably will. I would have preferred to have a better fourth option than Powell, but it would have cost me dearly. WR - Andre Johnson $42, Robert Meachem $14, Devery Henderson $2, Vincent Brown $1 In a three-wide league, you've got to have star, and AJ is it. Having Schaub and him on the same team is a risk considering that both lose lots of value if the other gets hurt, and both are injury risks. Still, nothing ventured... Meachem looked like more and more of a steal as the draft wore on and other guys with similar value went for twice as much. Henderson will give me 500 yards and a couple of touchdowns at worst, and might finally break out without Meachem in town running the same routes. Brown will theoretically be back in Week 8, which means I'll be starting a waiver scrub in Weeks 6-7 when my WR byes begin. TE - Dallas Clark $2, Kellen Winslow $2 Yeah, I totally goofed on Winslow. No matter. I got a steal on Clark. He's all but forgotten in fantasy, but he's playing with Josh Freeman, who sometimes appears to forget that players other than tight ends are eligible receivers. He ain't gonna score, but he'll rack up catches. K - Nate Kaeding $2 He plays in constant 72-degree weather with a high-powered offense, and he's the most accurate kicker in history. The only thing that would make him better is a dome. DEF - Pittsburgh $4 This was kind of an impulse bid in the early going that worked out brilliantly. They were the second-best fantasy defense last year and came at less than half the price of San Fran and nearly half the price of Baltimore. |

As I said earlier I like my team, and I think barring injury could compete. My strategy is usually grab a stud RB, a few mid level players, and then look for players which provide depth at a value.
QB- Tony Romo $26, Sam Bradford $6 I know a lot of people hate Romo, but a Qb with a season stat line of +4,000yrd, 31 td's, and 10 int's is great for $26 with other similar Qb's going for a little more. RB - LeSean McCoy $61, BenJarvus Green-Ellis $22, Kendall Hunter $6, Lamar Miller $2, I grabbed McCoy as my "stud" this year for more then I was looking to spend for him personally. For that price I'd rather have Rice or Foster (which was a little cheaper), but they went earlier in the draft when I was still trying to figure this years market. Green-Ellis is decent at $22, I took a flyer on Reggie Bush not getting through 2 seasons in a row unscathed and drafted Miller. WR - Vincent Jackson $26, Justin Blackmon $18, Nate Washington $13, James Jones $7, Brian Quick $2, Greg Salas $1 I don't like Jackson for $26, but I didn't have a WR yet and panicked. They were coming off the board for more then I had anticipated, but looking back there was still better value on the board such as Stevie Johnson for $18. Blackmon I think will end up being good at $18, I've watched a few of the Jag's preseason games and they look a lot better this year. Nate Washington could be a steal at $13 if Kenny Britt ends up murdering someone. I took a couple high ceiling picks with Jones and Salas (high ceiling because of who is tossing the ball around, not because of them personally). TE - Lance Kendricks $2 I pretty much punted on the TE position. But Kendricks certainly has the talent to produce this year. |

I just want to mention how sneaky Cobra Kai's strategy of showing up halfway through the draft and buying everybody was, once peoples budgets had been spent.

No, I don't think so. Just making a joke. I do think that considering he missed out on all the top players, the team he put together isn't bad.

Garcon's Cedilla's $1 outlay for Kevin Ogletree is looking pretty damn good right now.

I doubt Garcon's would have started him, had his $8 purchase of Jerome Simpson panned out. Oh well; everyone's got a bad beat story. I hope I'm just getting mine out of the way early in the season. Last edited by Gray Ghost; 09-06-2012 at 06:12 PM. |

Jerome Simpson will pan out. He's suspended for a couple of games, but he should be productive after that.

Son of a bitch. I was tailgating from 6am and couldn't get on to check status. I almost started Morris with Stewart being questionable. If I had been around to check status I'd have 20 more points. I forgot that I honor conditional requests for just this situation. Damn.

Yeah, the week couldn't have turned out much better. I made the right call to put in Heath Miller at flex, and he scored. AP started and looked like his old self. Forte would have been even better if he hadn't had to share carries (and scores) with Michael Bush, but I can't complain about what he did.
In all, 7 of my 8 non-QB offensive players scored (all except Brandon Lloyd). And RGIII was damn good. My bench sucks, but you can't have everything. |

Well, barring a massive performance from Ray Rice and Jacoby Jones and a massive loss by SD, I doubt I'll be winning this matchup. Still, the majority of my players outperformed, so I'm optimistic for the rest of the season. Unfortunately, I was cheering on Randy Moss all afternoon, not realizing I left him on my bench.

Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, I believe.
Well, barring any major scoring adjustments, I squeaked by a win over Frosted Lightning this weekend. I'd have lost if it wasn't for that last drive by Stafford. I had quite a few underperformances (Ant. Brown's dropped TD, Charles not involved in any passing targets, Royster being on the Redskins, etc.). I'm going to have some serious flex/bye week issues. Should be a ride. Last edited by Munch; 09-10-2012 at 12:54 PM. |

I don't think I've ever seen a player/unit with a projected negative score. Has anyone? My Denver defense is projected to have -0.08 points against Atlanta.

Willie Parker was projected to score -0.1 points for me once. I think the projection formula thing was screwed up because he fumbled three times the previous week.

I have to make up 10 points with Julio Jones and the Denver D. And I think Julio Jones can do it. Which makes me wonder - should I just bench the Denver D and go with an empty slot? I'd feel kinda stupid if Denver made a decent showing and scored a defensive TD or something, but it's very possible Jones puts up 13 and Denver puts up -6 or something and I lose.

Between the Texans squashing their opponents and Fred Jackson, my season is already over. Sad face.
