I haven't really known what to say in this thread, but I find it very sad. Then I found this post:

Quote:
Hell this reminds me I really gotta get a new pair of shoes.
I find it really terrible that he'll never buy those new shoes.

It's the little things like this that drive the awful reality home, sometimes, isn't it.

I'm going to try and attend.

Oh, whoops. I thought it would be in Orlando for some reason. Nevermind.

Tdn, for the love of God do not post an open link to any online rememberance book. The snack pitters will be all over it with ladle references. Limit it to people from this board you know and trust, and send it via pm or email.

I'm wondering if there will be an additional service in Winter Park. And maybe one in Japan.

That makes me wonder, if there are three separate services, if he will attend all three. And if his parents will. His service in Boston will be at a funeral home. Does that mean that he's going to be there?

Not being well-versed in funerals, I don't know the logistics of these things. I just hope that he's buried in Japan. That's where his heart was.

I doubt, if his family is in MA then that's probably where the only service will be held.

Not likely. They cremate here, and most people take the ashes back.

If it's a funeral Mass as the FB post said, it will be in church and I'm assuming he would be buried in a Catholic cemetery? I'm assuming a lot from the Mass bit, though.

Apparently he is being brought back to Boston for the wake and funeral, and will be buried at a Catholic church at his alma mater. I'm guessing that his parents will be here. They live in Florida but I guess that they think of Boston as their true home.

As it turns out, he died in his sleep between classes. Of... sleep apnea? It sounds like no one really knows the cause.

The wake will be on Monday, the funeral and burial on Tuesday.

Catholic funerals don't require the body to be present, nor a burial. I've been to funerals where the body had been donated, where it was going to be cremated, and to one where it was buried several countries away.

Mod note

I removed the specifics of the information on Monday's mass near Boston. If you want to attend, contact tdn for that info.

That's not a "funeral" (Mass of Christian Burial), it's a memorial Mass. My Mom's memorial Mass was in CO for her friends there, as her body was on the way back to CT for her Funeral Mass and burial.

Not clear which is meant by the FB post.

http://www.saintwilliam.org/funerals.htm

Mass of Christian Burial with the Body Present: The preferred practice among Catholics.

Mass of Christian Burial with the Ashes Present: Having the body present during the funeral, followed by cremation, is the preferred practice among Catholics. If the body has already been cremated, the ashes are brought into the Church and are treated with the same dignity and respect as the body. This is NOT considered a Memorial Mass.

Memorial Mass with No Body or Ashes Present: This Mass is usually said when someone dies and is buried elsewhere. The Memorial Mass is held within 30 days of death so that family, friends, and the community may come together to pray for the deceased.

Just a bump. His obit is online with the funeral home now, should anyone care to post. I think most people who have posted in this thread know his name by now, so finding the obit is a cinch.

Fuck balls, I'm just hearing about this via the facebook invite. I thought it might be a bad joke of some sort. It looks like this happened while we were still without power over here, so it slipped right by. Unfuckingreal...

So long, birthday brother -- you'll be sorely missed. God damn shame we never got to share that beer...

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a "heart attack" as in the technical sense (blocked artery, "heart attack" is also commonly used to describe cardiac arrest due to other causes). At least, I hope it wasn't and it would be highly unusual if it was unless he had a family history (then why didn't we/he know about that?).

I don't have his full name, but would like to see it. Would someone kindly PM me the link to the obituary?

Thanks.

Shrug, guess it's a difference in translation then. You can have funerals corpore insepulto (with the body not buried) or corpore sepulto, so just go take it up with the people who wrote the Latin.

With my apologies for the sidetrack, but gigi, I think you're assuming that when I talk about, for example, "someone who was buried several countries away", I'm talking about someone who already had a funeral and burial. I'm not. The body was left where he died; the first Mass held after his death, for him and following the funeral rite (not memorial rites), took place back home.

Thank you for that.

I note that there is a place to type in a condolence message; would anyone like to leave one in appreciation of the Dope as a whole? I can't see that any have been left at all, yet, but don't know if that's just my browser being weird, or maybe it's just not a thing anyone does...I dunno.

He looked good. I guess they're going to bury him with his glasses on. That answers a question that I never even thought to ask.

His parents were in good spirits, considering. It was really good to see them. They're going to try to move back up here by the end of the summer. I'm glad, that way I can maintain a connection to him.

His parents lost the link to this thread, but his friend is setting up a web site that will allow us to leave our memories of him. I'll let you know when it's up and running.

Yes, the same thing was done for my Mom. The Memorial Mass "Memorial Mass with No Body or Ashes Present" was said the week she died, and then the Mass of Christian Burial (with body present) was said two weeks after her death, with the burial following.

We're probably saying the same thing.

Like everyone, I'm extremely shocked at the sudden death. I didn't know Autolycus well, but he was the only Doper here with whom I exchanged emails with, since we both got into the JET programme at the same time. Turns out we were both stationed in the north - should have taken the opportunity to visit him when I passed through Aomori.

Damn.

I decided to wander back after 6 months and saw a thread about chique in my subscribed threads which I thought was odd because I was sure it was a couple years old. Then I saw one of the recent comments was about Autolycus also being deceased and I was shocked. I had to search out this thread. Sorry for bumping it after two months.

I remember when he showed up here and he was a bit ... exuberant but also funny. Then he settled in and he was still funny but also proved to be a thoughtful and intelligent poster. He will be missed.
