I plan to go in May next year to visit friends.

I know a little about Veracruz, but nothing about Xalapa. I have only been in "border towns" before. I have tried to find information in English and Spanish online, but so far I only that it is famous for horticulture.
Does anyone have any advice relating to travel in that area? Is it off the beaten path?
