I've heard a lot of vague tales about how people on welfare or begging for money make a good living. They usually say something like 'welfare homes have color TVs, satellite dishes, etc.' or 'a guy can make more panhandling on the street than in a minimum wage job.'
I'm a bit skeptical of all this. It strikes me that people and the gov't aren't really all that generous, and that these stories may be propaganda or to convince voters that welfare should be reduced or eliminated, or urban legends. What's the dope on this? How good a living can a welfare recipient possibly have? How much does the gov't give you? I know this will vary from state to state, but I'm curious.
