How should I tweak my home theater subwoofer?

How should I figure out what to set my gain and frequency levels for my subwoofer to? I know what each of them mean, but is there any sort of test I can use to get them set just right so that the sub isn't too loud and only plays on lower notes that my regular speakers cant play?
