Scrolling over thread titles won't yield a preview. Help please.

Well, I posted this in ATMB and got nothing so I'm asking the teeming millions. Why can't I get a preview when I roll over a thread title? I'm no computer genius by any stretch. The only thing I could think to try was to disable my pop-up blocker. Yeah, well, that didn't work. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 9300 and Windows XP.

By the way, I have no trouble getting a preview on my desktop at home and at the office.

Thanks!

My WAG is you have your security level set too high, try setting it to medium and see if that helps.

When I've had this problem before, clearing out my IE temporary files did the trick.

I'll use this thread to ask a related question: Why is it that when I use IE, the previews are longer (more of the post is previewed) than when I use Firefox?

This was covered in another recent thread. Boils down to Firefox's implementation of previews. That's just what you get.

in Opera you have to find a sweet spot somewhere in the middle of the empty page. It is usually quicker to open the silly thread. Really annoying

It's already set at medium. I even disables my firewall just to see if that was the problem. I'm completely stumped.

On my machine here at work, if I do a search (right click on a folder, select Search, enter some text and click the Search button), then alt-tab to my SDMB browser, I don't get the popups. I have to close the search window to get the popups back...

I have no idea why...

Maybe your mouse isn't 'active' in that window.
When you go from one window to the next (as you did) you have to click once somewhere in the new window in order for the mouse hover to work. Just because you have that window on top does not mean that the hover will work (until you 'activate' that window with a click).

Not sure if the OP is aware of this or not....

Yeah, I was aware of that. I'm so damned frustrated by this. I'm at work so I can't try this but a friend suggested enabling something that allows "tip bubbles" to pop up on the computer. He says it may be shut off right now. I guess I 'll try it when I get home tonight.

The Chao Goes Mu, have you tried clearing your temporary files, as suggested above? Just in case you haven't done this before, here are the steps:
  1. Click on Tools in IE
  2. Choose Internet Options
  3. In the middle of the windows that pops up, click on Delete Files...
  4. Click OK in the popup
  5. Close any open IE windows, then try to go back to the SDMB and see if it works

I haven't tried it but it's worth a shot. For what it's worth, there arent' many files in the file right now. It's a new computer and I think there's seriously only about 50 files in there at the moment.

I've had this behavior with a small number of files as well; I suspect it is not a matter of how many, but instead what files are cached. The larger the number of files the more likely that one may be causing the problem, but it could still happen with just a handful.

Well, I tried it, to no avail. I don't know where to go from here. I really liked the convenience of previewing before opening a thread. Damn.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.
