Confusion on Doper names

I'm new to this board, and some of the names on here make my little brain stumble. Worse than reading Russian novels with patronymics. It came up in another thread, which made me wonder how many other names I am getting horribly wrong.

spingears I always read as Spring Ears.

Mangetout I always read as mange tout, (approx "eat it all" in my long forgotten, rusty french.) not MAN GET OUT.

Oh, and boy typer rama, whatever his real name is.

Yes, I know my name is weird, too. Dah is part of my name, fisher is what I do, and roo is for irreverence. If you have a better one, I'll listen politely.

I opened this thread to ask what Doper names have you completely misinterpreted?

Yours. Until you broke your name down, I always read it as Danfisheroo. I assumed your real name was Dan and that you like to fish. And maybe your favorite Winnie the Pooh character was Roo.

Msmith I always read as Mrs. Smith, although I think (s)he's a guy. I also read spingears as spring ears, and Mangetout the way you do.

Wow! Multiple mentions in one thread, and no one is insulting me yet!

I continue to read Ninjachick as Ninjachuck, and Gus'nsomething as Guns'nsomething (I can't remember his full username, sorry).

Of course, Spring ears - Thought it was a spaniel reference...

I always read spingears as Spring Ears, too.

Recently, ronincyberpunk changed his name, and a lot of us 'fessed up to reading it as Rouncy Bouncy Punk or something like tyhat. Now he's Improv Geek, which I read as Improved Greek.

Yet another spingears -> spring ears misreader here.

I've always read Mangetout as Mangy Trout, and pictured a trout suffering from skin inflammation and hair loss. It's always sad to see a fish lose its hair...

To me, WOOKINPANUB is WOOKIEE IN A PUB. Unlike Mangy Trout, WOOKIEE IN A PUB has a glorious coat of hair, and often enjoys a quiet ale.

I too frequently make the Spring Ears mistake and always read it as Rouncy Bouncy Punk. I'd be curious to hear from Mangetout himself* what the intended pronunciation is.

*I think Mangetout is a guy. Apologies if it should actually be "herself."

Mangetout is a guy, and has stated in several similar threads that the name actually is mange tout. I can look for a cite if you really want, but am feeling lazy right now.

It didn't occur to me that anyone would read my name as nori new until people in threads started addressing me as "nori". This was my first ever message board, and it didn't even occur to me to come up with some punny name or witty cultural reference. I just used the same name ISPs have been sticking on my email for years: first name, last initial.

I personally always stumble over YBeafy. No clue how that's pronounced, or what it means.

I also have trouble with WOOKINPANUB and read it as WOOKINAPUB, pronounced Wookieinapub.

And for some reason, I find the name quite exceptionally squicky. Sorry, WOOKINPANUB. Nothing personal.

Holy crap, I'd never noticed that I'd had that wrong before. Ditto WOOKINPANUB, except for me it's "wok in a pub," for no discernible reason.

Then there's Punoqllads. I'm not sure that's even pronounceable anyway, but ever since she explained that it's "spellbound" upside down, I've just thought of it that way.

No offense indeed! Hmmmmph.

Would it be less squicky if I explained it's "lookin' for love" as pronounced by Buckwheat from the Our Gang movies? What's that? You find it even squickier now?

As for norinew, I always thought it was a play on "no renew" like you were trying to tell us you would not be renewing your subscription here.

And when I see Mbossa , I think of "Mombassa", only I say it to myself the way Grace did when she was mocking Will on W & G. "Ah yesssssss,Mmmmmombassa"

I just saw Cunctator's name in another thread, and looking at it, it finally dawned on me: It says Cunctator. Not Cuncanator! (Sounds like: CUNK-in-nate-or)

For some reason, it just always sounded like some kind of superhero name, or supervillian, or maybe even a Transformer of some sort. But it's not. It's Cunctator. I have no more idea what that means than what Cuncanator means, but I am a little saddened. It doesn't sound nearly as Transformer-y to me, now.

On preview: I Googled. I see a Roman Commander whose name means "delayer". He does not appear to turn into a car or giant robot.

MGibson obviously is Mel despite the fact that there have never been any drunken anti-Semitic rants posted.
Frostillicus reads as Frosticulus. I guess that would be what a man gets when he skinny dips in a frozen lake.
WOOKINPANUB always seems right but I keep hearing Eddie Murphy’s voice singing it.
Batsinma Belfry I see as Batsina, not Batsinma. Minor difference I guess.

A lot of screen names for me are just like hard to pronounce alien names in sci-fi novels. Bene Tleilax or Tleilaxu in the Dune novels for instance. My eyes encounter the word, my brain quickly decides it's too much work to sound it out and from then on I "hear" it in my head as something more pronounceable. Like "tilAXoo."

For me it's picunurse. Until she posted about a nursing topic, I thought of it as "pick you nurse", when what it stands for is "PICU nurse" -- a nurse in a pediatric intensive care unit.

She's a she, and she's a sweetheart. We've discussed her name at Seattle Trivia, and many of us parsed it as "peek-oo-nurse" - kind of like pikachu. Heh. She's cute enough to pull it off.

I always assumed that Anastaseon, Aesiron, and Asterion were fans of some sort of franchise (Buffy? Naruto? Star Trek?) that I just wasn't aware of, and were intentionally patterning their names after some sort of naming convention of that series. Turns out it's just a coincidence.

As I've noted in several other threads, I took the name from the great Roman general Fabius Maximus, whose masterly delaying tactics I greatly admired when we studied him in Latin at school.

For those of a classical bent, the Latin verb "to delay" is cunctor, cunctari, cunctatus sum.

As far as I know, none of us who have "not" in our names are related to each other. Mine's a pun on JFK's line, "Ask not what your country can do for you." I have long been Nott, as in Nottingham.

There are several usernames I don't understand, though I can't think of them right now.

In case anyone is interested I am neither an optometrist nor an optimist, username was meant as a bit of a joke, actually. This is one of the few times it's worked as planned.

Bobo... I'm sure there was a good reason.

Ditto the msmith/ms smith and spingears/spring ears confusion.

Excalibre will always look like Excaliber to me. Anaamika reads as Amerika to my addled brain and Tomndebb reads like Tommy Depp.

For some odd reason that I cannot fathom, I always get Evil Captor and Crafter Man confused. Their names have nothing in common but each has one word that starts with "C".
