Just thought I'd post

Hi, everyone. I know I'm a little late, but I thought I'd post to defend my name against the acrimonious accusations that were made against me.

Do I really hold the distinction of being the first person to be pitted before ever posting?

Anyway, to clear everything up:

1. Yes, I am a lurker.
2. No, I am not a troll or a sock puppet.
3. This post has been Polycarp◄ed by the Poly... oh, never mind.

Well, what's under the key? A turtle, I reckon.
And you know what's under the turtle. It's turtles all the way down.
I've been told it's a representation of Hitler.

Well, would it hurt to allay possible concerns that some people might have by describing why you picked a name that is 50% that of an existing (but unusual) username, and 50% gibberish?

Er...for those of you that can't see it (I just checked with IE), it's a left-pointing arrow, kind of a filled-in <.

So, um, what's the deal with your username? Did you toss around alternatives, like Coldfire_ and Lynnn Bodoni, or were you a Polycarp fan right from the beginning?

A square? A left-pointing arrow? All I see is an ampersand and a number symbol between Polycarp and the 9668.

Well, sir, welcome aboard!

You can imagine my intense curiosity as to why you picked a name very similar to the one I use. I look forward to seeing the reason (knowing several other phenomena tied to our mutual name, I was not myself assuming sockitude).

No, I meant in carrot's post ... there's a square. In the neuvo Polycarp I see the ampersand, number, 9668 and a semicolon in that order.

Er, that'd be ◄, not a square. I do not see a square on the username side of the screen. I see a square in my post. That might just be the board software's rendering (or lack thereof, possibly) of the sign followed by the ...oh, hell, I dunno.

The & # 9 6 6 8 ;

Code:
is html code for the left pointing arrow head. Looks more like a triangle with one point at 9 o'clock.

It gives a null character (the square) if your charset doesn't have anything with that code in it.

Darn, I had a longer reply typed out but I lost it.

Honestly, I originally didn't intend to post at all. I only registered so I could search. I didn't think anyone would know I existed! I never really noticed the "Welcome to our newest member" feature on the main page, until I saw my name there after registering.

As it turns out, I can't see the left-pointing arrowhead I thought was part of my username either. It shows up as a square in the post text, and in the left-hand column and the forum screen where I'm listed as the thread starter, I see ◄. Inredibly, in Homebrew's quote box, the arrowhead does show up.

I guess I should ask for a username change. I'll try to think of a decent one.

How's Scylla◄ sound?

Oh come now Poly, you know there's literally hundreds of users registered here with variations on your screen name. Why, it's got to be one of the most popular there is at these boards, right after supercalifragilisticexpealidocious.

Do you think any of us will take this poseur the least bit seriously until they show the courtesy of changing their entirely unoriginal ripped off screen name? Besides, I doubt there are but one or two people at these boards who would be fooled for a picosecond by this seemingly uncouth cretin.

Hmm. In Safari it looks like a box with shadowing around the edges with a small diamond inside it with a dot in the middle of the diamond. . .
I'm not making this up.

A true poseur would have named himself Polycrap...

I see Polycarp, an ampersand, a pound sign, 9668, and a semicolon in his username. I do see empty squares in some posts here, though.

I don't know. The original Polycarp was a "Christian martyr. A student of the Apostle John, he was burned at the stake during a period of persecution of Christians in Smyrna." So it well could be a coincidence. Before you picked your username, did you search the boards to make sure there were no variations of Zen already registered? Maybe give PolycarpII the benefit of the doubt.

I don't know....he did admit he's a lurker, although he doesn't say for how long. But, he's clearly familiar with Scylla, so it's safe to assume he lurked on more than one thread. I can't imagine anyone lurking for more than, say, 10 minutes without encountering a post by, or a mention of, Polycarp.

And his OP makes an allusion to the late unlamented Grapist.

He's a lurker.

I take at face value his statement that he registered in order to search. I assume he had no intent to perpetrate hoaxes, and take as a compliment his use of a variant on my screenname. If you decide to change it, Polycarp◄, may I suggest something that does not bear close resemblance to another name, e.g., TUBAD1VA, UncIeBeer, or Dr Matrix? For gosh sakes, don't take that last comment seriously!

JFTR, I've been using Polycarp online since 1989, when I was on the staff for the AOL predecessor PC-LKink During 2000 I was amazed to learn that there was a band (now defunct) using the name "Polycarp" based out of Durham NC -- not 40 miles from me! So goofy coincidences do happen!

I woulda, and still got a chuckle out of it, but nearly four years of seeing it as unintentional typo (followed by apology) nd intentional insult, have kind of worn the novelty off it!

I haven't been diagnosed, but I often feel I am dyslexic because at first glance the letters in a word appear transposed. (I'm not suggesting I am dyslexic, just that I get that idea sometimes.)

And I'll admit it, one of those words has been Polycarp...

There is a whole theme there to be explored, Polycarp beat me to it or not the original Polycarp perhaps?

I got the impression that TWT wanted the user name Thylacine (for some unknown reason) and was noting that it was taken, rather than commenting on your marital status.

Hell, for a while here we had Aceospades and aceospades. And IIRC we still have a Fenris and a fenris.

I kinda doubt, though, that we will see an Iampunha (though not for lack of people mistakenly capitalizing it!!!!!)

Actually we had an Ace0spades 0=digit, not letter, who was banned, returned and was rebanned (and forced to change his name between the two) and an Aceospades who's a cool guy who should not be confused with the late unlamented Ace0

And I don't believe there's a fenris. There was a Fenris1 who was part of the St*rmfr*nt invasion (and was made to change his name) and there's a ferris. And even a Fenrir. But AFIK, no fenris.
