'Nother Sekrit Projekt : Support Our Troops

Okay, so maybe this one's not that secret after all.

I think most of you remember the last project we did. If not, one of our dopers was having a baby and we all got together and put up an online baby book for the new arrival. If you missed it, you can see the results here.

It occurs to me that now that we're at war, we should do the same sort of thing to let our troops overseas know that we support them. Regardless of how you feel about the war, whether you think it was justified or not, our men and women are over there now. They need to know that we at home are still thinking about them and still have our love, our best wishes and our support.

So, whattya say we do this again? Send me your letters of support for our people overseas and we'll put up a website at Teemings for them to see. I'll try to publicize it as best as I can. Any ideas in that respect would be appreciated although I think that if we get the URL to Airman Doors, he can probably start spreading the word around.

Let's do this. My e-mail addy is Eutychus55@cox.net. Let's roll.

Edited to change e-mail address

My, that was quick!

A small request.

I'm already getting some responses to this, but please when you send them in, let me know what your screenname on the SDMB is.

Thanks!

Interesting idea, Euty. Is it possible for any of the folks stationed over there to access the URL? If so, that would be kind of cool. Just don't provide a link to GD from there.

Ideally, yes, that's the point. To have the folks over there be able to see it while they're over there to know that they're not forgetten. I'd pass around the URL to the Teemings site, but not specifically to the message board.

Three responses.

Well, I guess this was a lame-ass idea.

It sounds like a fine idea, Euty.

Will there be any drives of any sort involved?

It's a great idea, Euty. I know that Airman really appreciated getting all those cards and letters while he was in Basic Training; he showed them to me, and still has them.

Airman is still in transit, as far as I know, so it might take some time to get something to him, but when I hear from him, I will pass it along.

I'm in, Euty.

My brother is currently stationed in Afghanistan, and they have access to email where he is, so I assume that means they will be able to access it.

Okay, we've got the ball rolling here on this. I've begin the site and you can see what we've got so far here : Support Our Troops!

PLEASE, if you have friends or loved ones in the service that have access, et them know about what we're doing here for them. And let me know too! I think it would be cool to be able to post on the site how many units that we know have seen it.

Thanks again! Keep the entries coming in. I'll keep on updating the site as long as people have things to say!

Euty, I've mentioned this to the family services representative for Airman's unit, and will bring the URL with me when I see her this Saturday. Hopefully, I'll have a mailing address for those who want to correspond by mail.

This was a great idea Euty. I know that the troops will appreciate the warm thoughts and prayers.

Two personal experiences:

During the invasion of Afghanistan my daughter was deployed on one of our carriers. I sent her a lot of cards and some "care" packages. I also sent some cards to her shipmates that were signed by some of the people in my office. When I took a tour of the ship when it came home, those young sailors thanked me for the cards, and told me they were thrilled that we cared enough to take the time to write to them.

When I was in Viet Nam, my youngest sister was in the 6th grade. Her class sent me a letter that had a short note from each student. Reading the comments, thoughts, questions, and good wishes from 11-12 year old kids was pretty damn cool.

I know the troops that are deployed now will appreciate hearing from folks at the SDMB.

Thanks,

DT

I've sent the link to my nephew, who is in the Air Force. He is going to try to get it to some friends who have been deployed.

Thanks, again, Euty, for doing this.
