Ok, I have a few more:

Bauhaus never even went to the school they took their name from; heck, they aren't even German.
Blood Island Raiders are from London, UK.
Breaking Pangaea are from Philadelphia, PA, USA.
Buried At Sea are all very much alive and from Chicago, IL, USA.
Chelsea Grin are from Salt Lake City, UT, USA.
Cypress Hill are from South Gate, CA, USA.
Dirty Vegas are from South London, UK.
Minsk are from Peoria, IL, USA.
Rings of Saturn are from Dublin, CA, USA.
Sir Lord Baltimore were from Brooklyn, NY, USA.
Snake River Conspiracy are from somewhere in California, but nowhere near the actual Snake River.
Underworld are actually from Romford, Greater London, UK.

OTOH, Sun Ra really was from outer space (and nothing you can say will convince me otherwise! La la la I can't hear you la la la!)

The Afghan Whigs were from Cincinnati. But they all are actually card-carrying members of the Whig Party.

The Thompson Twins aren't twins, and none of them are named Thompson.

Mike + the Mechanics does have a guy named Mike, but they are all musicians, not repairmen.

Afrika Bambaataa is from the Bronx.

Arctic Monkeys is from the UK.

Big Country is from Scotland...which isn't a very big country.

Styx does not live by the mythological river bordering Hades.

I checked my neighbor's apartment down the hall and 3 Doors Down don't live there.

Technically most of the founding members of Boston weren't from that city. They were students from other places who were attending college in Boston when they formed the band.

John Kay originally came from what was then Tilsit, East Prussia (now Sovetsk, Russia), so it wasn't all that far off.

Kaliningrad is not steppe, and sandwiched between Lithuania and Poland on the Baltic coast, it's a long way off from the steppes, comparable to the difference between say Delaware and Nebraska.

And, technically, MIT isn't even within the City of Boston.

They should have called the band and album The Boston Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Though with a name like that, they'd have to be jazz or post-punk or something, I guess.

Bombay Bicycle Club are from London, quite far away from India. To add insult to injury, they are a music band, not an actual club for cyclists.

Phoenix are not from Arizona. Or even the right continent. They are a French band.

It gets worse. Beirut? They are actually from Santa Fe. At least they named properly his hit song as 'Santa Fe'.

If you think that Okkervil River have fairly spot on accents for a bunch of Leningrad natives, think again: they are from Austin.

Insanity. Why won't this musicians stop lying about their origins?

I'll grant you that. What's more, Kay was, like Hermann Hesse, of German birth. Kaliningrad had been German since the Middle Ages, and wasn't made part of Russia until after the war.

Yes, but he changed his name to Denver because Colorado was his favorite state, and lived in Colorado for most of his career. So in many ways, while Henry Deutschendorf was from Roswell, "John Denver" really was from Colorado.

There's a Joplin in Illinois? The one is Missouri is the one that'd come to my mind (I lived in Missouri for several years and once visited Joplin).

There's a band called What Made Milwaukee Famous who are from Austin, Texas.

Heaven & Hell weren't from either.

The band +44 is apparently named after the international dialing code of the United Kingdom, but they are from Los Angeles, California.

I actually googled Joplin and it said Illinois. I'm not American- I just remember a show about some guy who murdered someone else in Joplin - he was contracted to do the hit and claimed the gun went off accidently. This Joplin looked a real dive.
