Seeing, contrary to popular wisdom, isn't believing. It's where belief stops, because it isn't needed any more.

"She heard him mutter, 'Can you take away this grief?' 'I'm sorry,' she replied quietly. 'Everyone asks me. And I would not do so even if I knew how. It belongs to you. Only time and tears take away the grief; that is what they are for'"

No matter how fast light travels it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.

You might be right.

But the version attributed to Twain is a little different:

Attributed but not sourced, I'm afraid. It seems to be a paraphrased and misattributed form of the original.

You know, I never understood that line about violence being the last refuge of the incompetent. Isn't it more often their first resort?

I suspect I'm missing something here.

I like the Schlock Mercenary take on that: If violence wasn't your last resort, then you didn't resort to enough of it.

Not the most classic, but still good, it's from two of Arjen Lucassn's Ayreon albums (01011001 and The Final Experiment)

'Tenser,' said the Tensor.
'Tenser,' said the Tensor.
'Tension, apprehension,
And dissension have begun.'

The Demolished Man might make a better movie if they figure out how to show someone reading someone else's mind. I don't think Bester gets enough credit.

I think the OP may have his quotes already, but your Frank Herbert quote reminded me of two from his psychological drama, Under Pressure. It's a short read, but a good one.

Quote:
"I'm nuts," said Sparrow. "But I'm nuts in a way which fits me perfectly to my world."
Quote:
"What's your definition of sanity, Skipper?"
"The ability to swim, said Sparrow. That means the sane person has to understand currents, has to know what's required in different waters."

You'd better look up the actual word-for-word accuracy of any of these suggestions you actually use -- quite a few of them are "off" by a bit.

The sun did not shine.
It was too wet to play.
So we sat in the house
All that cold, cold, wet day.
I sat there with Sally.
We sat there, we two.
And I said, "How I wish
We had something to do!"
Too wet to go out
And too cold to play ball.
So we sat in the house.
We did nothing at all.
So all we could do was to
Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit!
And we did not like it.
Not one little bit.

The latter is much better. "My precious" is more iconic and better known, but I don't think it's actually better. Besides, it seems like you want quotes that are instantly recognizable to fans of the work in question, but not quite so recognizable that any person who's been awake for the last three decades can't possibly miss it. Oh, and you're missing:

"A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to."

"Rinaldo is largely responsible," answered Prospero, drawing up his sword-belt another notch. "He sings songs that make men mad. Hang him in his jester's garb to the highest tower in the city. Let him make rimes for the vultures."
Conan shook his lion head. "No, Prospero, he's beyond my reach. A great poet is greater than any king. His songs are mightier than my scepter; for he has near ripped the heart from my breast when he chose to sing for me. I shall die and be forgotten, but Rinaldo's songs will live for ever. "
