What was your most recent truly unique food?
At a beer-food pairing last night one of the courses was truly unique. I realized that's sort of a rare event. I go out of my way to try anything, so after 58 years I sometimes figure there are no surprises left.
The course that made my day was a Dutch crumbled blue cheese ice cream served with peaches and lemon toasted pine nuts, with a balsamic reduction drizzled over everything. It wasn't just vanilla ice cream with cheese added, it was ice cream made from scratch using blue cheese as an ingredient.
I've never had blue cheese ice cream before. It was exquisite.
The beer it was paired with was a limited release sour ale fermented with peaches and aged in French oak casks. At some point it was inoculated with Penicillium roqueforti, the organism used in the production of cave aged blue cheese. The ale had a subtle, funky aroma attributable to the mold.
