Favorite retro hat/jersey

I recently saw someone in my neighborhood walking around with a 80s style Phillies jersey, and I thought both the color and logo were way superior to the Phillies incredibly bland current jerseys. What retro jerseys or hats do you really like in comparison to the currently used outfits?

WHA New England Whalers jersey (mid-'70s) and NHL Hartford Whalers jersey (1979, '80s)

I was a big fan of the New England Whalers as a kid; we moved away from Connecticut just before the Howes joined the team, tho.

I remember seeing the Pittsburgh Pirates with their pillbox hats back in the 70s and I thought that they looked cool. I still like 'em and I wish the Pirates would wear them.

The Mariners trident shaped like an M is clever and much better than the “gold S” or “compass with a baseball on it”.

I like the Pacers' "Flo-Jo" jersey, circa 1995, and their later pinstripe jerseys, circa 2000, much better than their current ones.

Retro Astros

Retro Nuggets

To name a couple. Definitely not bland, that's for sure.

I was going to mention that one too. That jersey is awesome. I’d get one except my wife is a die-hard Mariners fan and I’m sure it would mysteriously disappear. (Or I would.)

The Brewers' "mitt" logo from the late 1970s / early 1980s, and the pinstripe home uniform from that era, as modeled by Robin Yount.

Also, the Seahawks' original logo and uniform design.

The old Jackie Stewart caps; I still have one from Jackie himself.

And of course the robin's egg blue version of the Pittsburgh Penguins jerseys.

The old Expos jersey and logo, especially the pinwheel hat, were pretty sweet.

I never understood what the hell that logo was supposed to be. I always thought it was "elb" but I guess it's just "eb" for Expos Baseball. And then the white l part is just to make the whole thing look like a letter 'M' for Montreal. Weird.

From sportslogos.net:
Quote:
The Expos logo, often misinterpreted, is a combination of the team initials when spoken in French -- an "e" (in red on the left), an "M" (half in white, half in blue), and a "b" (in blue on the right) -- the eMb represnts "(les) Expos (de) Montréal Baseball".
One could argue that the red bit and the white bit together form a "d".

I don't know what the time limit is on "retro", but the Marlins' original Road uniform was a thing of beauty. I love how the marlin curled around the "F" of "Florida" (with the tailfin as the middle line) and the teal trim around the black letters/numbers was shiny, which really hit me when I saw it. That last bit you would have had to experience in person, the effect does not come through in photographs.

The Pirates' pillbox hats were also retro when they wore them in the 70s. They were supposed to be throwbacks to the caps worn in the 19th century.

Another vote for the Montreal Expos. I also liked the San Diego Padres uniforms and caps they switched to in 1985 better than the yellow on brown that they had previously. The pinstripes from 1985 to 2000 or so were classy.

I was going to mention the Phillies 1980s uniform as well. The team has brought them back to wear as a throwback on occasion, but they wear them at home! The powder blue uniforms were only meant to be worn on the road.

The 49ers throwbacks this year are glorious. They even used an older version of the helmet logo. They're referencing the Super Bowl season in 1994, and those uniforms were themselves throwbacks to 1955.

Those are, indeed, awesome uniforms. The 1994 versions were their throwbacks for the NFL's 75th anniversary (note the patch on Steve Young's shoulder in that '94 picture link), and as I remember it, the retro uniforms were so well-received that they opted to use them for much of that season.

Yeah, their current use is part of the NFL 100 season. The story I remember from '94 was that the team had some early-season struggles (Young was benched during a blowout loss to the Eagles), noticing that wins came while wearing the throwbacks and losses with regular ones, head coach George Seifert and the players petitioned the league to let them use the drop-shadow unis the rest of the year. It worked, they only lost once wearing them, week 17 while resting starters.

I think the current Seahawks uniform is the best in the team’s history (I even tolerate the radioactive version once a year) but seeing them suit up in the original uniform would sure make me nostalgic.

I have to take some umbrage with this. While I agree the 70s-80s powder blue unis are pretty cool, I'm a huge fan of the 90s-on jerseys and logo. I like the classic Phillies look over the "Me generation" version.

As a Philly fan, I'm not a supporter of the Kelly green "loser" jersey so many fans want to bring back, but I LOVE the old timey white helmets with the green wings. They scare me!

I notice in hockey, most older teams that try to introduce new logos eventually go back to their originals or at
least feature them on part of their jersey offerings. The Islanders, Capitols, Rangers, Sabres, Flames, Canucks, are among a handful of teams that tried doing this.

Even in basketball, the Washington Wizards usually wear a jersey that looks like the Washington Bullets.

Oh, and as far as my favorites. The classic Winnipeg Jets jersey and the Quebec Nordiques jersey. The cities seemed quite exotic to me when I first started watching hockey. My cable company in Ohio picked up some Canadian channel so I saw a lot of Canadian teams back then.
