Turns out the writer of the TNG episode “Measure of a Man” absolutely LOVES “The Orville”. She is green with envy because she and other writers would have loved to be allowed to turn in the same kinds of scripts.
She talked about it here:

A bit of news from Dark Horizons:
Seth MacFarlane says the confirmed second season of his sci-fi series “The Orville” is “going to be at least” fourteen episodes, up from the twelve of the first. The plan is also to lean on a heavier science fiction tone and pulling back a bit on comedy to broaden the appeal.

MacFarlane confirmed there’s no intention to do a full twenty-two episode season, saying: “I’d rather do fewer episodes and have them be better content-wise than do 22 and have them be filler.”

(About what the Union's fleet is called...)

I never noticed this, but you're right. The Union force of armed starships is never named; the term "Union" is applied to both the political entity and the fleet, which is odd, albeit certainly a possible thing. It's referred to generically as "the military" at least once, but that doesn't appear to be a proper name.
Providing useless posts since 1999!

Thanks. I was pretty sure I would've caught it if they ever mentioned it.

Late reply, I know. But I have read Flatland but would not know an Emerson quote. Flatland is a fun little book, ala Phantom Tollbooth. It appeals to me as an SF fan and a math nerd. Emerson is just some guy I vaguely remember from English class.
