They follow the science, subdue it, tie cinder blocks to it, and throw it in a deep reservoir.

Ayatollah Khomeini has been dead for thirty years.
He probably meant Khamenei, who is an entirely different person.

My first thought was Chinese trade war/Japanese trade war, Trump would think: "What's the difference"?

Marge: Can we get rid of this Ayatollah T-shirt? Khomeini died years ago.
Homer: But, Marge! It works on any Ayatollah: Ayatollah Nakhbadeh, Ayatollah Zahedi...even as we speak, Ayatollah Razmada and his cadre of fanatics are consolidating their power.

There has been too much violence. Too much pain. But there is an honorable compromise. Just walk away. Give us your pump, the oil, the gasoline, and the whole compound, and we'll spare your lives. Just walk away and we'll give you a safe passageway in the wastelands. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror.

Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, on climate change:
"You know, I think it's weather patterns, frankly. And you know, and they change, as I said. It rained yesterday, it's a nice, pretty day today. So the climate does change in short increments and in long increments."

Speaking to a group called Latinos for Trump (!), Mike Pence mentioned the Democrats. The crowd started shouting "Traitors!" "Murderers!" and "Lock them in cages!" Pence did nothing to calm the crowd. https://www.mediaite.com/news/latino...-in-the-cages/

We have a President and VP either tolerating or outright encouraging violence against political enemies. We have a state's Republican party encouraging paramilitaries to attack democrats. We have open white supremacists in various elected and appointed positions of power. And we have concentration camps.

Are we great yet?

I'm terrified and hopeless.

Pence wasn't just speaking to a Latino group; it's a group created by Trump/Pence/GOP to make it seem like Trump has Latino support.

Like so much else with these folks, it's a lie.

I fear for a time in the not too distant future, when GOP apologists are here telling us stuff like:

"Hey, you can't call these concentration camps! That is a term reserved ONLY for those in WWII Germany! And besides, our centers are not using Zyclon B gas. We use only VX organophosphorus gas, which is much more efficient and humane. And the sub-humans are transported to OUR centers using trucks not trains. So it's TOTALLY DIFFERENT"

The actual chant from the linked article was "Lock them in cages that they built!" which is significant, because this seems to be the new party line. Based on Trump's gish-gallop remarks today, the story about the border is:

It's a humanitarian crisis, now. It's no longer about MS-13 pouring over the border.
He wants to spend money making it better but those mean old Democrats in Congress won't do anything.
And the problem was much worse under Obama. All this kids-in-detention stuff started during the Obama Administration, but Trump is working to make it better.

The absolute bald-faced-bullshit is stunning.

2. Declare bankruptcy

Not entirely a lie. There is a core 23% of Latinos who are committed Republicans and won't care if Trump eats babies on live television. I will note that this matches John Roger's Crazification factor pretty well.

Sure, but this group was also around for the 2016 election; it's just an Astroturf group, created to generate seemingly-favorable headlines and stories, which is exactly what this one did.

A top Environment Protection Agency official who helped lead the Trump administration’s rollback of Obama-era restrictions of carbon emissions is resigning amid a congressional probe into whether he improperly aided former industry clients.

EPA Assistant Administrator Bill Wehrum is expected to depart at the end of June. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler announced Wehrum’s resignation on Wednesday, thanking him for his service and friendship.

Ethics questions have dogged Wehrum since his 2017 nomination by President Donald Trump. He long represented the fossil fuels and chemical industries as a Washington lawyer. Narrowly confirmed by the Senate, Wehrum has helped lead EPA’s rollbacks of clean air and carbon emissions regulations that were opposed by his former private-sector clients.

The Democratic-controlled House Energy and Commerce Committee opened an investigation in April following media reports questioning Wehrum’s compliance with ethics rules barring political appointees from acting on issues involving their former employers for at least two years.

Documents obtained through a public records request by the Sierra Club showed Wehrum met with former clients and industry lawyers from his former firm without disclosing the contacts on his official calendar. He also gave a closed-door presentation last year to the Cooler Heads Coalition, a conservative pro-business group that seeks to raise doubts about mainstream climate science.

Committee Chairman Frank Pallone Jr. vowed to continue the investigations into Wehrum’s conduct.

I think it relates to this.

Quote:
Fireworks at Mount Rushmore were probably a bad idea to begin with. In South Dakota’s woodsy Black Hills, the thousands of onlookers who flocked to the display had to use the same entrance, which is also the exit.

What if the pyrotechnics sparked a forest fire? And what if there were some other emergency? Those are two questions that officials at the national memorial site grappled with during the 11 years starting in 1998 that the event was held. But there was at least one other threat, something officials at the national memorial didn’t consider until a U.S. Geological Survey investigation recently uncovered it in the drinking water.
So if hundreds die in a mass conflagration, or thousands of local residents start having thyroid problems we know who to blame.

An AP factchecker article made me LOL with some unexpected snark. Most of it was written in typically dry, just-the-facts style. For example:

Quote:
Trump appears to be referring to the fact that the FBI, for technical reasons, was initially unable to retrieve months of text messages between the two officials. But the FBI was ultimately able to recover them and there's never been any allegation that Mueller had anything to do with that process.

But then a little while later, along came this paragraph:

Quote:
Trump persistently mischaracterizes trade in all its dimensions, giving the wrong numbers for trade deficits, asserting that tariffs did not exist before him, and portraying them inaccurately as a windfall for the government and taxpayers. In that respect, he was correct when he said in the interview, "I view tariffs differently than a lot of other people."

That is arch as fuck. Well played, Associated Press. Well played.
