Thanks for enabling the skin switcher.

There was a lot of potential in the new theme, and I hope TPTB will authorize continuing to debug and perfect it, but it's soooo good to be back to a theme that just works for how I read The Dope most of the time.

What is your setting for "Message Editor Interface"?

Go to User CP > Edit Options > Message Editor Interface (at the bottom of this page). It appears you may have "Basic Editor" selected. Choose on of the other two options. Specifically WYSIWYG if you want all of the bells and whistles.

Just to be clear, are you sure you're selecting the old skin in the menu or user CP?

You should see "Straight Dope v3.7.3" in the menu when viewing forums, like in this photo.

Seems to work fine in the old skin. Don't know (& don't care) about the new one.

@Crazyhorse Yes. Old skin, WYSIWYG editor. Also, I forgot to ask: You know the Straight Dope banner that used to be at the top of the page that took you to the homepage? Is that still missing for everyone, or just me?

MIS: I suggested before that you've run into other problems that have to do with your computer. And I think this confirms it.

Check your extensions. And, if you're not using GreaseMonkey or TamperMonkey, uninstall them. You can try a binary search: turn off half your extensions, then see if the problem continues. If so, turn off half of the rest. If not, turn back on half of those you turned off. Rinse and repeat until you find a problem.

If that doesn't work, you could check for any programs in your programs list to see if you see any that look like they could effect the Internet. And, if that doesn't work, you may want to google how to make a new profile, or how to Refresh Firefox.

And, if that doesn't work, I'd start looking for malware. Try some antivirus/malware scanners like MalwareByte AntiMalware. Sure, those little things aren't what malware typically does, but they can be a side effect of badly programmed malware.

I just tried it, and it works for me. (Old skin, on a desktop.)

Actually, I'd never known that was a thing before this thread. I'd always scrolled all the way to the bottom of the page to use that link.

Didn't work. I'm going to have to get someone who actually knows about computers to help me figure this out. Is it possible that I might need to reboot after getting rid of TamperMonkey? Because deleting it didn't appear to do anything, but I can't reboot right now because there's something I'm in the middle of. I'm going to try that when I'm able and see what happens.

It works for me, but the entire banner isn't clickable. You have to click directly on the image on the left side where it says

Sure.

And you could fix it by adding
pre { white-space: pre !important; }
Or you can just remove the following line from css/stvb3r.css.
pre { white-space: normal; }
Also, I found the problematic CSS that is messing up boxes inside of quotes. The following fixes it.
.converttodiv div { width: auto !important; }
And this fixes Spoilers inside quotes:
div[style*="display: none"] { display: none !important; }

You should be able to go to the bottom of the forum page, and there are three blocks for "Display Options". One of them has "From The" and the drop down box lets you select how far back it looks. Should be on either skin.

As for the code problem, I posted at the skin creator's page and he fixed it.

You can just re-upload stvb3r.css and replaced it in your forum images/ SultanThemeVB3R/css/stvb3r.css

Most of the really annoying stuff in the new look has been fixed, but I still find the older look to be slightly preferable. Thanks for setting up the option!!

You can also set the option in your UserCP to display older threads by default.

UserCP > Edit Options > Thread Display Options > Default Thread Age Cut Off > Show all threads

It looks fine, but how do I post a new thread? It seemed to have disappeared just recently, both at home and work.

OK - just found it by clicking on tools. Seems odd to hide something so basic.

The one really noticeable difference is still that issue with the search function. In the old style, you can select a whole slew of time ranges to search agains, but in the new style, you can search in time intervals of 1 year or less, but the only way to search for longer time intervals is to search "all". If we're so concerned about resources being tied up in searches, that would seem like an obvious thing to fix.

At the top of every forum page should be a big blue "Post New Thread" button.

New theme? Depending on browser, it may not be so blue. Specifically, it may be a white button on a white background labeled with white text. Probably with white 3d shadows and white highlights.

The button is there, in the place it's always been. You'll just have to poke around until it triggers. Or click-and-drag to highlight it, in which case (in my browser, IE6) it shows up as pale blue text on a while button on a white background etc.

Yeah, that's apparently what I've got. Moved my cursor around up there and where the box SHOULD be, the arrow turned into a finger. Stupid shit like this really throws me off. Make one of the most basic functions more confusing for the low-level user.

Guess it is no worse than an all black ship with black controls...

it's already set as off by the admins. You only have to check the box to show it.

It's still displaying a banner ad after every fifth post. This was noted way back in the early days of this skin, by me and others too.

The only way right now seems to be to use the old style. The new style still has it on by default, unless you use my Userscript.

Or, at least, that's how it's working for me.

Though I'm fond of being a world authority on some such nonsense, I am sick of bragging about it. I'm from Minnesota. It's unseemly and I wish to turn the stupid option off by default. While I appreciate BigT's efforts, at some point the SDMB paid for this software (we did, right?) and I expect proper support 20 years later, dammit!

It does feel like, once the old theme was added back, Ed decided to deprioritize any changes, including the ones we'd already agreed upon. As far as I can tell, there have been no changes on the test site at all since then, not even the really simple ones.

Like I said, dropzone: just switch back to the old theme. Set it as your default, and ignore the new theme until they actually work on it again.

Or use my addon. I've made some more changes, and even made it a lot faster on older computers!
