Gimme more Emoji

Would you become more one with the universe if the SDMB offered a richer, fuller, more all encompassing set of Emojis that you could effortlessly click on to embed in your dribble?

Did you post this in the wrong forum? I don't see a Straight Dope column about emoji (or emoticons) recently.

Right you are BigT. Now if I only had a Emoji that would depict shame ...

It'll never happen. There are too many old timers and sticks in the mud here that hate the idea of altering pretty much anything about the way this site is set up and will loudly proclaim their resistance to that idea. Me, I'd like a more diverse set of emoticons to choose from.

This site definitely needs to be more like Facebook ... hearts and stars and unicorns prancing ... [adorable grin] ...

The description of the smilie is "red face." Can't you be red-faced with shame?

Me, too. The Giraffe Boards has some nice smilies. Some of them are even animated.

This site has long operated on the premise that your WORDS are what you should use to communicate. That's why you don't get to insert images, that's why there is a limited set of emojis to utilize, and that's why there are no thumbs up/down opportunities, etc. So, for example, Little Pig could have said simply, "I am ashamed to say that you are right, BigT".

I use emojis all the time in my other online personas. Perhaps a little too much. I love the fact that I'm forced to convey most of my meaning here by proper use of the English language.

It's a bit of a fetish. Kind of a dumb premise when you think about it. Even Cecil's columns include a picture.

The whole deal with emojis, the few that we have to deal with on the Dope, is that they let you drop something heavy and back out of it with a wink or a grin, or get real serious with a mad face you lookin' at me? but they are merely shorthand notes to avoid real conversation. Which is contrary to the whole point of this board. I use them occasionally, more and more never. Yes I'm an old-timer. My post count does not show that, but my membership status does. You guys can have this when we're gone. Give me enlightened engagement with intellectual discourse. Except for MPSMS. Thats cool too. That's what I'm here for.

I disagree. And I'm not particularly pleased to have something I've suggested I consider valuable called a "dumb premise." It may be something that people like you disagree with, but people like me find it quite refreshing and helpful. I don't think there is any inherent dumbness to it.

I agree with this for GQ, GD, ATMB, and Elections. But the rest of the board tends more light hearted and fun, especially The Pit, so maybe just enable more for those forums...foruii...forumii or stuff.

OK, if we could get new emojis designed by Slug, in that case I would be all in favor of them.

Meanwhile, though, image emojis explicitly enabled by a site are an anachronism nowadays, anyway. Why do you want us to move backwards? We're not stuck in the past, here.❤☀

It's my understanding that several court cases winding through the system were going to require all social media include the dancing banana emoji but luckily the scrapping of net neutrality should put the kibosh on that.

That's just a bunch of ? marks on my screen. The thing is, image emojis always work. Even if, like Twitter or Facebook, you just convert real emojis to image emojis.

I think we need an emoji with little X's for eyes and his tongue hanging out listlessly, just for the OP.

My SDMB Old Smileys userscript is still around, for use with the Tampermonkey or Greasemonkey addons to any browser (except Internet Explorer).

And I've just put out a CSS-only version up for people who want to use the Stylish addon instead.

There must be an internet rule for "anything can be abused, and will be".

The guy I was talking to (Crazyhorse) has an SDMB Avatars script. Google it.

It won't make them consistent (as part of the problem is the forum software), but you can install Chromoji to get nice pretty emoji in Chrome. Clicking the button even gives you a list of them you can click on.

That's what I use on Windows 7. Windows 8 or higher may have color emoji already.

The excuse used to be that every single poster would make goatse their avatar. Or even worse. The avatar would be animated and that would make this the worst site on the internet because we are about our words and we stand by what we write and not the big-tittied animated anime girl we would all make as our avatar.

Image emojis are for losers. Real posters use keyboard characters that don't get converted. :-)

But the trick is you don't have to use them. Just being able to choose from some more, particularly in lighthearted banter type situations would be fun.

Twice we added custom smilies. Both times it started with a thread in which folks made suggestions and then there was preliminary voting to obtain the primary candidates and finally a championship match from which the winner was chosen.

These were the winners (I don't remember the consecutive order):

I never thought these events should take place too often (and thus clutter up the array of smilies with too many options). But I think it's been well over a decade and we could probably consider accommodating another one. Or we could replace one of the existing ones. No one likes the modern rolleyes; the green one was so much more contemptuous and we want it back! The embarrassed face wasn't good before (looked like a blowjob-face to many board regulars) but now it looks constipated and there's a lot of room for custom improvement.

A emoji test post I made that apparently failed for most users: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/...d.php?t=758938

Apparently cutting and pasting wasn't working, even when the originals displayed properly.
