Happy Doper Milestones thread

Diggit Camara pointed out that we have an In Memoriam thread stickied, but not one for happy life events, like births of babies, weddings (esp. between members!) and the like. So here's a thread for that.

Enjoy!

There's a reason I thought this up: on September 19th of this year, my little girl Lile Marķa was born!

Hopefully, this is in the spirit of the thread.

Three years ago next Thursday marks the very first time I spoke to jsgoddess on the phone. We were married 9.5 months ago. Like a misguided Pit thread, it has gone extremely well for me, and less so for her.

18 years ago today, I became a father. Best mistake* I ever made and tied for best thing that ever happened to me (we had one other mistake).

*Mistake as in unplanned of course.

Or is this supposed to be along the lines things that just happened, like our baby was born today If so, feel free to delete.

Unsure if this is appropriate, but...last month was the one-year anniversary of when I got my bass clarinet!

For many years we've been warned off of posting Doper Posts milestones. If that is still frowned upon, then I won't do it.

Otherwise, I'll come back soon when I hit the milestone.

Please advise?

Yes, post count parties are still against the rules, even in this thread. This is more for major life events like births, weddings, engagements, graduations, etc.

This year I completed my Concert Bucket List and have officially seen ALL my favourite bands and ALL my favourite songs done live. The last concert was New Order, with my favourite song of all time, "Bizarre Love Triangle." I just stood there freakin' right out the whole time and when the song was over I nearly started crying - all I could think was "I did it."

Well the first 10 lbs was just me watching what I ate. I had some help with the other 90; I had gastric bypass in June.

I completed the first term of my Return to College, receiving a 4.6 GPA and being placed on the Honours List, in spite of suffering the death of my stepfather on October 3rd and having to help clean out his house while still sleeping there, and then having to find a new place to live, and moving on the weekend of the first of December... and then having to complete an exam and five projects in the following week.

Also, I met an interesting woman.

A year ago today, two people who met each other through the Dope got married, and somehow managed to avoid causing the universe to implode. jsgoddess and I are happily celebrating today, and we are thankful to Cecil for inventing the internet and bringing us together.

My man and I are getting married on St Patrick's Day! We knew each other in college, spent 20 years apart, hooked up at Homecoming in 2011 and now we're in it for the long haul. Also, last week I got him to join The Dope. He jumped right in to the Celebrity Death Pool. Say hello to Librarian1900 if you see him!

Damn how did I miss this thread till now? Ok the latest ones for me. On December 11 my divorce finally was finished. It started in 2009 when I was in Iraq and was the most painful part of my life. But good news, a couple of weeks ago was my 2 year anniversary with my girlfriend. It takes a special person to be willing to take a chance on a separated guy and stick with him through the tough times.

As of last week I am 100% out of the closet. I've been out socially, to friends, family, neighbors, etc. for a long time and it has all been absolutely seamless. Work was the only last hangup.

Work has not only been fantastic, they are bending over backwards to help me and do things for me, and my latest meeting with HR repeated the theme of "you are one of our star performers, you have a perfect record of 20 years, everyone respects your knowledge, you're our best corporate teacher and your Professorship brings great PR to the company...what can we do to make you happy and comfortable so we will not lose you? Just tell us what you would like, and we will do it!" They assigned me an HR advocate and gave me her 800-number to call in case any co-worker, contractor, or client makes me feel uncomfortable or harasses me - summing up last week's meeting, "we will protect you, Una. You don't need to worry about anything," she said.

I never imagined my workplace would be so progressive about this; I was all ready to take early retirement (I'm only 44) when I went to them last week. All my co-workers are happy, my boss and VP are happy, all the people who work under me are happy, and today I came into work to find an inspirational card on my desk, signed by all the secretaries on my floor. It was so sweet it gave me goosebumps and sniffles.

Don't want to hog up this thread, but I'm very happily watching my little daughter growing up and ever more beautiful (I really hope the Photo Thread gets updated soon), I'm busily improving my Android App (for more details, look at this Marketplace thread) and now, we've reserved a little plot (about 170 square meters) which we'll be paying off during the next 2 years and on which we might one day build our new Home!

Happy Pre-Valentine's Day Engagement To Us!

Posting this on Valentine's Day, but for us yesterday was the BIG DEAL ... the third anniversary of our getting engaged (Chuck couldn't want for Feb. 14.)

He gave me a lovely pin, made of green Maine tourmalines, and an Edwardian brooch, sterling silver set with three very large champagne citrines -- provence says the stones are from the "Cairngorm mountain range in Scotland, circa 1900."

AND, this a.m. he presented me with a bonnie kilt pin, also in silver, with banded carnelian from Cupar in Fife, circa 1910, circa 1910."

Did I mention Chuck is Scots-Irish

And how a bonnie, happy lass am I

Thank you! How sweet!

I'm very happy and proud of myself - working full time and going to school is no joke, but I have found the willpower from somewhere. Nothing is going to stop me this time. I don't know how people know what they want to do when they are 18 anyway. I'm super excited!!!

Right now I am taking a course in Visual Basic, which is fun and I love making even the simple little programs we are learning right now.

A bit late to note it, but three weeks ago today, my lovely daughter Kate was born. My older daughter, at 4, is being a total champ about it: hardly a note of jealousy, instead showering her younger sister with love. The whole thing is even better than sleep.

Hey, that's perfectly in keeping with the spirit of this thread: my daughter, now almost 5 months old, was also announced a couple of weeks after she was born.

On March 17th of last year my little seven year old girl was raped by three pre-teen boys, just months after her father was deported. It has been a long hard year, but we've managed to not just survive but thrive. She's surpassed all goals set with her trauma therapy and graduated, but the big news is we finally got out of that rotten neighborhood and this past weekend we moved in to a beautiful house with a really great roommate. She is comfortable and happy with her new room and the big pool and we have three new dogs added to our brood, making us a five dog family. Life feels sweet for all of us right now, and I am tickled that there's a thread where I can share this happy occasion.

Tomorrow is the fourth anniversary of the day my wife and I brought the Firebug out of the baby house in Samara, Russia, and into our family.

He's five and a half years old now, and growing in so many ways. I'm luckier than I can say.

Seven hours from now, my fiance, daughter and I will be in the car making the overnight drive to Indiana.

Seven days from now, that'll be amended to "my wife, daughter and I".

What a cool thread!

Back in October of 2001, I met the poster known as Heloise at a massive DopeFest in Los Angeles. We really hit it off that week while I was there, and I was sad to leave for Amsterdam again.

Two months later, she flew over to spend Christmas with me.

The three years after that, we spend a lot of hard work maintaining a long distance relationship, with me flying to LA at least 4 times a year, and her popping over to Holland a few times as well.

On February 29th, 2004, we got married in Las Vegas, Nevada. On August 27th of that year, a plane touched down at Schiphol Airport, carrying my beautiful bride.

It was a one way ticket, that time. And nine years later, we're still happily married.

So, tip o' the hat to Uncle Cecil - neither of us was "looking for love", but life's what happens while you're making other plans. And I couldn't have wished for a better outcome.
