Canadian apologises to crowd for winning US Open

Bianca Andreescu won the women's US Open tennis championship this afternoon defeating Serena Williams.

Her comment to the crowd on winning: "I know you guys wanted Serena to win. I'm sorry."

Given that the whole exchange went something like this:

"What did you have to overcome in order to win the second set?"

"The crowd (pregnant pause as she realizes what she just said) I know you guys wanted Serena to win. I'm sorry."

I'm not sure how much she was apologizing for letting down the crowd as much as she was apologizing for calling them out.

Rysto, I think Northern Piper was good-naturedly alluding to the stereotype of Canadians being so nice that they’ll apologize when it isn’t necessary.

I think it is rather strange that anyone who beats her needs to apologise.

Osaka had to apologize last year. Tis tradition with Serena in NYC apparently.

Isn't there a stereotype that Canadians are exceptionally polite and always apologizing?

Sorry, but I've never heard of such a thing.

Eh...it was a nice funny moment, but I hope this is the last time, as it's going to get old very fast. The name Mike Tyson ring a bell?

*rimshot*

Is it bad that the thought of a bell makes my mouth water?

I was at the local horse race book on Saturday afternoon. Two dozen TV sets showing horse racing from around North America, and betting windows open for your convenience.

Except for one TV. It was showing the US Open women's tennis. It attracted a crowd.

Kinda funny when she plugged her ears as the crowd was cheering SW's second-set comeback.

And goddamned Coco.
