SDMB All-pro Fantasy Football 2019

Last year's thread

Provisional draft date will be Thursday, Aug 29 at 8 eastern. If that's not viable for you please speak up early.

Due to the way yahoo changed how leagues renew a few years ago, everyone automatically gets re-added to the league (rather than re-invited), so I don't actually know who is still around and intends to participate. To get around this, I booted everyone from the league and then sent another invitation. So please take your invitation if you intend to play this year, and if not, please tell us.

We will likely be recruiting new member this year - to get us back up to 12 and/or replace anyone who may not be participating this year.

I think this league has been stagnating lately, so I think we should experiment with a significant change up. One good idea is a superflex spot which would allow you to start another QB/WR/RB which significantly changes up QB value and draft strategy. I'm open to other ideas about any aspect of the league, and I may come up with some ideas myself in the next few days.

Draft is fine with me as far as I am aware.

Let's see if I can not suck as much!

After a one year stint, I'm going to have to drop out. This fall is going to be incredibly stressful and busy, and I need to cut down on my fantasy leagues. Given that I lost interest halfway through the season for this league, it seems a good candidate for cutting. When life settles down, I may decide to take another crack at it. Sorry, folks.

I recall I left this league because it was too vanilla, but I would come back if we spiced it up. Super flex is nice. Also I like the idea of doing ALL flex... Gets rid of the TE position.

My team was deleted. Could I get a new invite, Beef?

I'd be down for nearly any change - that's the nice thing about this league. I think a vampire league would be awesome, and dibs on vampire should go to the champ from last year. I'm also strongly in favor of eliminating kickers, going with 2 QBs or superflex.

Vampire sounds interesting, but would be very time consuming for the commish making all these moves between teams.

I'm in favor of the superflex as that was the best part of the Super League (well the 2QB).

Beef - can you send me another invite? Thanks.

What are the specifics for the superflex? Would we add multiple flex spots, only one of which can be filled by a second QB? I'm open to that or the vampire league.

Sorry, I've been busy this year and kinda half-assing all fantasy football stuff, so I haven't stayed on top of this. New invites were sent to Munch and Ol'Gaffer. RNATB hasn't checked in yet. Chisquirrel appears out, so we'll need to recruit at least one, and maybe Overly Sentimental will want to grab that spot.

I like his idea of actually going all flex spots, I don't know, what the hell. Maybe something like QB, Superflex (QB, WR, RB, TE), and then 6-8 WR/RB/TE spots. It would at least be pretty unusual without necessarily trying something completely new. You could start 2 QBs (although you could start another position in their place, due to injury/bye week if necessary so you don't get a zero like you would just having 2 QB spots) and then 6-8 of whatever WR/RB/TE combo you prefer.

Vampire league is a crazy and interesting idea. I haven't really thought through the logistics of running one on yahoo. This is what they're talking about, in case anyone is unfamiliar.

If we end up running with 10 this year again as we did last year, we could consider increasing roster sizes a bit to better fit the amount of startable talent.

I like the idea of going both superflex and just going crazy with the flex spots. It'd change strategy enough that it might be interesting, or it might not, but at least it wouldn't feel stale and would give this league a different feel from the rest this year. It seems like general reception to a change of that nature sounds good to those who've rung in.

If we do end up adding a superflex (second QB) spot, would you guys be content with just that, or should we just lean into novelty and have a bunch of flex slots for all the RB/WR/TE spots too? Are there any other relatively modest tweaks (not as drastic as a totally different thing like a vampire league) that'd interest you guys?

I did a full flex last year for my in-person (in addition to a standard) and to be honest it wasn't as interesting as you would've thought. The draft was actually really boring as you pretty much followed the ADP down the line. People weren't worried about grabbing an early position before a run or having to see if the person in front of you had gone heavy in RBs to see who they might draft.

What if we did the standard line up, the way we have been, but added 2 or 3 flex positions? One flex would be QB/RB/WR/TE while the other one or two would just be RB/WR/TE. If we kept the rosters the same size it would put a much greater onus on working the waiver wire and trading. With only 10 teams there is always available talent.

As I think about it the idea of all-flex probably does play the way Retro indicated. If you can't take advantage of positional scarcity that's one less available strategy for the savvy owner.

So I think that adding one super flex is the way to go. I've never done it so that will be enough novelty for me.

The Vampire league is a cool idea, with the obvious drawback of everyone wants to be the Vampire.

I’m also good with drafting this Thursday.

I really like the idea of a super flex. Having a slot we can use for any offensive player should produce some new and fun results.

Looking forward to another season with everyone!

Sorry for the absentee commishing this year.

The draft will be on Thursday at 8, as planned.

We will be adding a superflex spot. I normally hold a formal vote for this sort of thing, but since there's a lot of support and no objection, I'll just declare it official.

Other changes we can still maybe consider.

I also mis-managed the number of players. For some reason I thought we had room for Overly Sentimental, but I forgot that I already filled chisquirrel's opening with mhendo. So Overly puts us at 11 - we'd need one more recruitment to get this league back up to 12 people. I will work on that.

Also - if anyone is interested - we still need players for the Big League. I know half of you are already there, but if anyone is interested in another league, the big league tends to be an interesting one because the talent gets spread so thin and draft strategy (auction draft) matters more, there are more viable strategies with more runs on positions and opportunities that happen during the draft.

If you're at an odd number of players, I'll drop out.
I can't make a Thursday draft, and I'm not into the gimmicks rules.
I don't even know what a SuperFlex is, or a Vampire.

Superflex is basically just having a second QB spot. Except there aren't that many QBs to go around. You could easily end up in a position where enough QBs go on bye or get injured that you don't have a starting QB and there are none to pick up. In that case, it would suck to have to take a zero, so instead of just having a second QB spot, instead there's a spot where you can start any offensive player. QB/RB/WR/TE flex spot. Since QBs are the highest scoring players, it's almost always preferable to start a QB in that spot, but in a pinch you can use another position as a fallback player.

I'll see if I can recruit a 12th player. It'd be sad to see you go since you've been with us for so long, but I'll keep in mind that you're willing to give up the spot in the event that I can't find a 12th.

In the OP I wrote that the draft would be at 8 eastern, but in the actual league I set it to 9 eastern. I'm going to correct it to match the OP although I think in the past we've set it at 9.

Is either time a problem for anyone? As of now, I'm planning on going with 8 eastern / 5 pacific. But we can bump it back if needed, this draft tends to move quickly.

I would be interested, but I can't make the draft time. I have an unavoidable meeting. Let me know if there's a chance of a different draft time.

Should the QB scoring rules be lowered slightly to compensate?

Unfortuantely it's too late to change and get consent with everyone at this point, and other leagues have their draft next week. If you wanted to do a pre-rank auto draft, where you adjusted your values for players, I'd be okay with that at this point.

But otherwise unfortunately the SDMB just doesn't have that many people anymore and I think the interest in fantasy football in general is past its peak, so it has been tough to recruit these last few years, and we may end up just having to run with 10.

I don't think superflex generally do that. I don't think it's designed so that all positions are equally viable to start in that spot, but rather, than it's effectively a second QB slot with backup options so you don't get screwed if you can't field 2 QBs.

Yeah, Petey sounds like he's inclined towards bailing this year and volunteered to step out, so you can have his spot. I'll send you an invite.

Quick poll? Should we add another WR/RB flex spot too since we'll be running 10 handed and can afford the deeper rosters, or is just adding a superflex spot enough?

Always for more players playing at once

Makes the strategy for bye weeks that much more important

I'm generally not in favor of bigger rosters. It increases the chance that people just luck into having a great player sitting on the bench instead of forcing tough choices.

I think we make one of the flex spots RB Only and that still gives us two flex, one super flex, and seven bench slots

Sorry - Petey already dropped out and given that neither of you could make the draft I think we'll just end up going with 10 again this year. Thank you for the interest and you can be first in line next year if we need a replacement or go back up to 12.

To everyone else - the draft is in 2.5 hours. I'll send a PM reminder to those of you who haven't been active on the thread recently.

Last year I created a discord group for SDMB fantasy football leagues. It allows voice chat during the draft and also persistent text chat, one channel for each league. Last year we had a few people show up, and it's already set up so we may as well try to use it again.

Follow that link. If you want, set up your microphone so you can voice chat (you click on General under voice chat) or even if you don't have a mic set up you can still listen to those of us who do (under the text channels). Makes the draft more interactive/fun.

Ah that sucks, sorry. Have you tried a different browser or clearing your cache or any of that nonsense?

Yeah. I'm guessing its the crappy WiFi here. It takes forever to do anything.

Remember to check your roster today. The first game is tonight, and I've screwed myself a few times in the past by forgetting a Thursday night game and having the wrong guys on the bench.

Added extra money at the end of the draft to the waiver/FAAB budgets as per tradition. Minor bonuses for a few people. I was supposed to do it right after the draft but it slipped my mind until now.

Erm, yeah, my stats program doesn't currently support superflex. I'll add it in, but it may take a day or two. (Or an hour; who knows?)

All set with the superflex, which unfortunately was more complicated to implement than I was hoping. Still, it appears to work correctly. None of you "should have" started someone other than a QB in your superflex this week, but I manually tested when that's the case and the program handled it properly.

New this season are the Everyone vs Everyone records. I can re-arrange (or remove) any of the 10 individual tables, both up or down and left or right, so if you can think of a better way to present this let me know and I'll try it out. Right now I just stuck with the same 3 rows as last year plus added the two new EvE rows inside a spoiler box to limit thread clutter.

If you play in multiple SDMB leagues, be sure to check out your aggregate rankings in the Fantasy football general discussion 2019 thread.

Munch just scored 267.46 against me. I know you can't really compare year-over-year since we moved to 10 teams and Superflex.....but holy shit, that has to be a record.

Edit: That's more than 3 teams have scored total in the first 2 weeks.

My team is complete shit, and I'm also a shit manager! I'm the only one in the league at 0-4, and things don't look like getting much better.

My two QBs played against one another this week, and managed 12 points between them! I had a backup QB on the bench, but he would have been even worse, with 1.15 points!!! Eight sacks, one interception, and two fumbles, ferchissakes! Was the Bengals O-line on vacation last night or something?

I left Jordan Howard on the bench where he scored 3 TDs and racked up 31 points, and I picked the wrong defense, which also made a 16-point difference in my score (-8 vs. +8).
