The colon with the asterisk suggests a person who just drannk some straight lime juice. The one with the ampersand suggests a man getting a cystoscopy (I know! I had one once! :& :& :& :&!!!!)

Here's how... it's not UBB but HTML.

< img src="http://thematrix.acmecity.com/digital/237/smile.gif" >

It should look like this:

My only suggestion is use it sparingly. It is a small gif but Teeming Millions using it in each post adds up. And it takes up bandwidth not only from The Straight Dope but thematrix.acmecity.com also.

Actually, krish, I did it using the [ img ] [ /img ] command. Just testing to see if I could replicate DW3's feat. Feel free to delete the referenced post, TubaDiva.

Can we get any more cute faces? How about a green one for when a topic makes you sick (aka felching)?

Well, then where’s your smiley?

http://thematrix.acmecity.com/digital/237/smile.gif

(In fairness, one shouldn’t use it too often. It steals bandwidth from another site, which is poor form.)

Okay guys, the smileys are all cute, but we can't keep stealing bandwith from other sites.

Tell you what, get permission for us to copy these by Monday and we'll store 'em here.

Or I'll remove them, one.

(Gotta be fair.)

Your point is well taken, TubaDiva. I won't try to make the moving smiley faces...but I'd like to see a variation or two:
A frowning face with a tear or two--let's face it, in some postings it would be appropriate, if only to express that the poster had something really sad--but necessary--to say... like the frowning face with tears...
Something with "angry eyebrows" but a smile, to express a squelch or a whimsical triumph (it'd be similar to )
A face with a dopey smile and crossed eyes, to follow a weird statement or funny twist to something...

I asked earlier about variations on the smiley face, including one or two with tears; granted these may be my own contrivance and would not have enough value for other Dopers to use or want.
I would, however, like to know how to make that funny one with the tongue sticking out. I hope this wouldn't required excessive bandwidth.

The name of this topic is "Screaming 'smiley face.'" Unfortunately, isn't screaming, he's embarrassed, as in, "Is my face red!"

And if you wanna know how to make the new smilies, simply click on "Smilies Legend" to the left of the message box where you compose your works of edification and delight.
