Anyone want to clue me in to ways I can cheaply entertain myself in Jacksonville the evenings of 12/3 and 12/4?

I'm coming in for an energy services conference and will sort of be at loose ends those two nights maybe.

Where in Jax are you going to be? Are you going to have wheels? What do you like and what do you hate?

I've lived just outside Jax for all but 3 of the last 18 years... I'm no expert, but I'm prolly better than nothing... You are talking Jax, FL, right?!?

Jacksonville, FLA it is!

I'll be staying at the Sawgrass Marriott Resort. I wasn't planning on having wheels but I suppose I could rent some for an evening.

Nothing too boisterous. A nice dinner or something that would entertain or educate me. These things usually tire me out a lot so I won't have a lot of energy.

So what's good in JAX?

It's about to become screamingly obvious that I'm not in any way affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce. (That was my disclaimer)

Jax doesn't have a whole lot that's special or unique to offer. The zoo is wonderful, but not an option for an evening's entertainment. The Jacksonville Landing is not bad - if you've ever been to Harbor Place in Baltimore, the Landing is a pale, smaller version - another Rouse project. There are several good eateries there and it's on the St. Johns River so if the weather's mild, you can dine al fresco and watch boats go by.

The Museum of Science and History tries and fails... we were members, but I couldn't see sense in renewing - it's a sad place.

You'll actually be closer to the Beaches area - I haven't been there in eons, but I recall some decent restaurants. There was talk of having a boardwalk with shops and all - I think it's still talk, but like I said, it's been years.

Riding the Mayport Ferry is fun and cheap - at least we enjoy it, but we're boat geeks.

St. Augustine is a bit to the south - lots of restaurants and lots of neat old streets to wander thru.

If you were going to be closer to Orange Park, I'd meet you for a drink, but it's a work night, and I crash about 9, hence my lack of knowledge about night life. I know nothing about clubs, but I can direct you to the best marinas!!

PlanMan is a Jax native - maybe he'll see this and offer more than I can. Hope the weather is nice when you come down - that's one thing this area has going for it.
