Downloading Music

Should I be out shopping for a Rio, or some other downloaded music player? It all sounds cool, but will I be buying an '8-track' player? This question might be for Satan.

The problem with the current portable MP3 players is that you record your songs in the unit itself. You can have maybe a half-hour of songs on it at a time, but those songs can't be changed until you get home and plug the unit back into your PC.

For now, I'm sticking with my Discman, because I can carry my CD collection in the car, and swap discs for new songs whenever I want. Once MP3 players can do the same thing, I'll probably go buy one.

IMHO, it is only a matter of time before this becomes a predominant manner to own music. But we're a bit away...

First of all, people like to own things. I used to record my friends vinyl LPs on plain-old tapes, and the quality was not great and I didn't get the artwork. It's not surprising that I bought anything I really liked, even if I taped it.

Still, this new technology is making it where quality is not an issue... But it really is! I've listened to CDs and MP3's on very good speakers on my computer and there is most certainly a difference.

But as for right now, it takes about 30 minutes to download this not-perfect replica of the CD.

The expense right now for a burner and a player is more than it would cost to get a good stereo for the home and without all of the inconvenience.

I would wait for the technology to get better. The people I know who ran out and bought the first CD players were not pleased with how their merchandise (both the hardware and the software) held up after a few short years...
