Colin Quinn's New Show
Are my suspicions correct, or did someone else actually watch this trainwreck? It was the most incoherent show Comedy Central has run in a while, and Colin's rant about GE, NBC, and Lorne Michaels just seemed bitter. Anyone care to guess how much longer this one has before the plug gets pulled?

Does he not realize that he stopped being amusing after Remote Control was cancelled?

I think someone in a CC conference room said "Gosh, wasn't it great when we had "Politically Incorrect" on the schedule? I sure wish we had something like that again..."
And then things started to go horribly, horribly wrong.

The only funny Lorne Michaels joke I've ever seen is when Norm MacDonald hosted Saturday Night Live.
"A year ago I was fired from here for not being funny enough. Now I'm hosting. I haven't gotten any funnier..." |

The only funny thing I remember involving Colin Quinn was a line on SNL...it went something like..
"I see they now have the guy from Remote Control's father in the cast" HAHAHA If anyone can remember the exact quote and who said it, I would be impressed. And Kevin Nealon, as awful as he was, was nowhere near as cruddy as Colin Quinn. |

Colin Quinn was the second-worst host of Weekend Update. The award for worst host goes to the tag-team of Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey. They absolutely suck. They're like two kids putting on a very bad "pageant" in the backyard. Unfortunately, they're not in their backyardÑthey're on national televison. I get embarrassed for them.

Nope, Colin is the worst. I agree that Jimmy and Tina are worse at the actual update portions, but they were not so conceited as to try to have a spot-light half serious "rant" at the beginning of each update on their political views.
What an ass. |

Nealon and Quinn both had terrible delivery, but Quinn was obviously a funny guy, Nealon, not so much.
Fallon also has pretty awful delivery, but he's redeemed by both his enthusiasm and his partner. --Cliffy |

Colin Quinn was the worst. I thought Nealon was okay in a sort of Chevy Chase light vein. I think Tina and Jimmy do a great job. I think Tina is one of the best writers on the show too.
Does somebody owe Quinn a huge debt? Did he save somebody's life, so now he gets a show every year no matter how un-funny he is? |

Colin Quinn was terrible.
By far the best ever IMHO (even over Chevy) was Norm MacDonald. |

Denis Leary was on Conan O'Brien's show the other night and did a little bit of trash talking at Quinn's expense. Anyone know what may have brought that about? Seemes like there was something specific that set him off. |

Yesterday, probably to promote the premiere of Colin's new show, they re-ran his appearance from last week on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
Colin seemed (pick one or more) bitter, drunk, angry and bitter. It was pretty funny though. They talked about the old comedy club days, when Colin used to be the de facto boss at some club, and he'd let young comedians like Jon and Denis Leary go on when he felt like giving them the nod. Colin ranted a bit about Lorne Michaels, and did a long, unfunny bit about how he was jealous of Leary and Stewart's closeness, and angry at Denis Leary for saying "I can't picture you on safari." Yep, that's it. "I can't picture you on safari" was supposed to be a big insult that Colin was upset about. I got the impression they were fake-feuding to drum up publicity for each other. Quinn was unfocused, sipping his water (?) every 5 seconds, and rambling - I think Lorne Michaels was mentioned too. The funniest moment was when Jon asked "You do know that these cameras are on, right?" His new show sounded badly planned and chaotic, which is what it sounds like from the reponse here. I think I'll watch it to get a sense of the trainwreck before it gets yanked in a few weeks. |

God bring back Chevy Chase for weekend update
He could use the work and he was perfect Hell those great phone calls alone would get me tuning in again again "No, you don't actually blow on it. That's just an expression. Listen, I've gotta do the news. See you later. Love you." "So what are you doing? Oh clipping your nails? Bet they are nice and sharp...Uh I got to go" [ talking into the telephone ] "What are you wearing right now? No bathrobe? "[ notices the audience, hangs up telephone ] [ talking into the telephone ] "No.. I love it when you make noise. Remember when.. "[ notices the audience, hangs up telephone ] Good evening, I'm Chevy Chase, and you're not! |

My wife and I watched the beginning of Colin Quinn's new show (hey, it followed Jon Stewart). A couple of minutes into it, when that dude made the crack about "the scent of fried chicken," I started getting fidgety in bed. My wife said, "I give this another minute and a half." And I said, "I'm already done. I'm going to do laundry. You do what you want."
An abrasive, chaotic mess. At least Bill Maher managed to keep a general sense of thematic organization on his show, and occasionally did something really cool (the remote he did from that one prison was valuable television). I give Colin's show a week and a half before Comedy Central pulls the plug. They killed Chris Wylde after three weeks, and that was better than this. |

Norm got REALLY annoying and tired and boring when he kept harping on OJ Simpon and his relationship with Brandon Tarticoff (SP?) and his incessant need to insert the phrase crack whore at least 3 times in every Weekend Update segment and his ending every Update segment with some unfunny comment about Frank Stallone.

You guys who think Colin Quinn was the worst have obviously never seen Charles Rocket do the job. That is, before he was kicked off the show for saying the big F word during update.
Weekend Update anchors, in order of best to worst: 1. Dennis Miller 2. Norm MacDonald 3. Chevy Chase 4. Tina Fey/Jimmy Fallon 5. Bill Murray/Jane Curtin 6. Dan Ayckroyd/Jane Curtin 7. Colin Quinn 8. Kevin Nealon 9. Brian Doyle-Murray 10. Christopher Guest 11. Brad Hall 12. Mary Gross 13. Charles Rocket 14. Gail Matthias 15. Christine Ebersol Now that I've listed them all, I've decided that Colin Quinn wasn't that bad. God, the early 80's of that show sucked. Especially the Dick Ebersol years, before Lorne Michaels came back in from the wilderness. |

Colin Quinn was in Comedian, the documentary about Jerry Seinfield coming back to being a stand-up. He kept saying things that made all the other comics squirt milk through their noses. I guess you had to be there.
Weirdly, I was going to start a Rate the Weekend Update Anchors thread after reading the great oral history of the show Live from New York, but then I realized that the book pretty much skipped over the anchors for the lost five years that Rocket et al. were on. So here's the rest: 1) Dennis Miller 2) |

How in the world did that happen?
Anyway, here's the list, minus those I don't care about: 1) Dennis Miller 2) Chevy Chase 3) Tina Fey/Jimmy Fallon 4) Jane Curtin w/ Dan Ayckroyd 5) Jane Curtin w/Bill Murray 7. Colin Quinn 8. Kevin Nealon 9) Norm MacDonald |

For reasons unknown to anyone in the universe, I'm watching this festering boil of a show again. I think it's because I really like Janeane Garofalo. On that note, she looks so uncomfortable there. And Colin is scaring the hell out of some kid. I'm guessing this thing doesn't make it out of the week. Even Colin is admitting the show sucks.
They cancelled "Battlebots" and gave us this? I'll take the robots any day, even if I have to put up with Carmen Electra. Oh, by the way, Jane Curtin and Dan Aykroyd were the best on Weekend Update. -brianjedi |

Oh my god is this show horrible. Please replace it with something better, maybe Blossom - that was funnier, no?
BTWIMHO the absolute GREATEST person ever on Weekend Update (not just anchors) is easily Gilda Radner. Mr. Richard Fedder of Fort Lee, New Jersey wrote in to tell me that. What's that? Oh. Never mind.

I watched the opening 5 minutes or so of last night's debacle, and my God, all I could think was, "Get out, Janeane! Get out while you can!" There's something terribly painful about watching people trot out mean-spirited "jokes" that you know they spent weeks preparing, and acting like their one-liners just occured to them. I'm guessing Jimmy Fallon writes a good portion of his gags on Weekend Update. Most comedians have a style that you can spot when hearing the jokes, and many of Jimmy's have his style. On the other hand, a really good writer can write for a comedian's style. So who knows? Tina is certainly a great writer. |

The show sucked. Oh, it's a chance for an incoherent jackass to stumble over mumblings about how blacks are criminals, Italians are idiots, Irish are stupid no good drunks, 'lezzies' are hoes. With an unfunny group of guests (except for Judy Dench, who's good at standup) to match. That Jo Paolo guy just pissed me off. This was also schedule right afterthe episode of The Daily Show wherein Jon Stewart spends much of the episode on Trent Lot.
