Selective Service System--No Women Allowed

Undocumented (illegal) aliens, disabled males and males 18-25 (unless they are enrolled in some sort of military program at several Universities) are required to register with the SSS (Selective Service System.)

No women are required...why??

The SSS is a holdover from the draft, and the law is very specific about who is and is not required to be drafted. Since it reads "male persons", it excludes women by definition. Also, the Supreme Court has ruled that a male-only SSS registration is not unconstitutional. The SSS has a fact-sheet"]here[/url].

That doesn't mean it didn't piss me off 20 years ago. If I gotta register I sure as shootin' wanted everyone else to do so.

If it makes you feel any better, JC, the SSS says that women can register, should the need arise. All they gotta do is change some verbiage.

SSS

Thank you very much MsRobyn. Clearing up that I'm not a macho chauvinist, I still disagree with the Supreme Court and DOD. There are female tank commanders, fighter pilots and I'm sure some ground support personnel. I believe that extenuating reasons (like mother with children) and pregnant woman are solid reasons for exemption. What about the male single parent families? I believe the DOD doesn't feel that females can do the same job, which is hogwash.
My read on the SSS is that the government could feasibly draft disabled males while exempting physically capable females. I wish I was a lawyer I'd take this up with the Supreme Court again.

Again thank you for an answer to my question.
Have a good day!
