SIMPSONS 4/27 - Dude Ranch
I missed a couple of jokes. What was the opening credit, running to the couch sequence a reference to? What was the Marge behind the cactus gag about? Just that she's shaped like a cactus? She says something about being 18.
Hopefully your replies will not go flying over my head.

And I know this wasn't her first crush. Is this supposed to be like Bud on MWC? He lost his virginity at least a couple dozen times on that show.

Marge said "I didn't gasp like that until I was 18!"
I found Lisa's lack of interest in the ponies puzzling too. |

The catheter to IV bag joke is funny, but I liked it better the first time . . . when it was used in Catch-22. Did they really not expect viewers to notice?

Maggie's britney dance in the belly shirt was decent. Overall it was just so-so.

Lisa had a crush on Nelson and they dated for a while. She also had a crush on "Corey" and got in trouble dialing the "Corey Hotline" from school. Wasn't the couch gag just them done up as mimes?

I'm fairly certain Lisa's first crush was in the second season episode Lisa's Substitute.

So, "I didn't gasp like that until I was 18" means that when she gasps she stands like a cactus. And she can somehow tell the cactus is under 18 years old. Huh? Maybe it's not that I don't get it. Maybe it's a poor joke?

Look, it had nothing to do with the cactus. She's hiding behind the cactus to spy on Lisa. When she hears Lisa gasp girlishly at the guy, she delivers that line.

It was a pretty weak episode. It felt like they threw it together to meet a deadline.

The beginning, with the unexpected Xmas singing, and the whole Ned Flaunders song and David Byrne bit was absolutely hilarious. It went down hill from there.
I found it very out-of-character and totally offensive, not to say an extremely negative stereotype, for Lisa to be so mean to another girl, just cause she had a crush on the boy. I wish they had use the beginning for a regular Xmas show. |

The first half of the show was a classic. Watching Flanders and Rod and Todd singing along to the song was too much
.The Dude ranch set-up was funny "It says 'Take One'." The actual Dude ranch section was not as funny, but then again it featured Lisa, so that is to be expected. Still tons of laughs, and the episode moved very quickly. I liked it. 8/10. So there. |

The ep was pretty good outside of the Lisa storyline. The bit with Homer and the Indians was great. "How many decks will your dealers use?"
![]() Lisa storylines are almost always lame. |

The ending of this episode conveys exactly what is wrong with the series today. Instead of ending with a classic Moe bit ("Moe, Moe, Moe...how do ya like, why don't ya like me?"), they had to go over the top with Homer spurring the family truckster like it was a bronco.
Bigger and stranger isn't always better. |

Oh, and as far as why Lisa objected to riding the horses, as a vegetarian she is worried about animal exploitation. Riding with her crush could I suppose be seen therefore as (gasp) out of character. Which reminds me of another of Lisa's "first crushes," the Dirt First! guy. |

Everything but the Lisa plot was good, which is typical for Simpsons these days. "But the beaver is also our God. In retrospect, it was a poor choice." |

Another Lisa crush: the boy from the other Springfield Elementary (West? East?) that she twirled with all morning.

What sterotype is that, anyway? That humans get jealous? They DID blow it big time on Lisa's character, though. It's well established that Lisa adores ponies. She's had crushes before. How did they forget that stuff? |

"Stereotype," of course. Thanks to slamming the patio door on my finger, I'm not typing as well as usual.

I still think the funniest line in this episode was when Homer finally gets sick of his song playing on the radio.
"I've grown to hate my own creation...now I know how God must feel." |

I recognized the "Moe! Moe! Moe!" song as being an obvious pop song parody.
Was the "I hate Flanders" song also a parody, or was that an original tune? |
