Hoses on gas (petrol) pumps

How much gas is left in a hose when you fill up and it stops dispensing? Does picking the hose up at the droopy bit to try and get what's stored there do any good?

No. I don't know about Canada, but in all the gas pumps I've used (in the United States) have a valve where the handle is. There is a constant pressure in the line, so if you picked up "that droopy bit" none would come out unless you opened the valve in the handle by squeezing the lever. It's harder to explain than I thought, but basically you get the leftover gas from the person before you so it all works out fine.

Back in my student days, I used to run out of petrol once in a while; filling a can involved bringing the nozzle to the can on the ground - a much lower level than to fill the tank of an ordinary car; there was always quite a gush of fuel before I squeezed the trigger. I've never really understood this as I too thought that the valve was in the handle.
