Where should I stay in San Francisco?

I’ll be staying in San Francisco in a couple weeks for a few days and was wondering which hotel I should stay in. I don’t want to spend a fortune but I also dont want to stay in some seedy rathouse. I’ve found some decent deals on the 'net but have no idea what the hotels or surrounding area’s are like.

Also, I’m going to check in alone but a freind of mine will be meeting me later, so I’d like to stay someplace where I can sneak her in w/out having to pay extra. So please recommend a hotel or at least a decent area of the city where hotels are generally clean.

We might end up camping out for a night or two as well. Are they’re any camping area’s around the city?

The Holiday Inn at the bottom of North Beach (Columbus and Lombard are the streets if I remember) is fairly cheap for San Francisco and not too bad a place to stay. Also it is quite central.

It’s been about 3 years since I was there so prices and good/bad places to stay may well have changed a lot.

Generally, avoid downtown (Marriot, Hayatt etc. which are expensive) and don’t get too close to Fishermans Wharf as that is a tourist trap.

If you’re game, try the AYH hostel at Fort Mason (on the Wharf).

You can’t beat the location.

The wife and kids (ages 5, 10) and I stayed there last summer and it was a right decent place.

Closest campsite to SF that I know of is a KOA, about 40 miles north.

If you provide some hotel names, or areas where you’re looking, that’d be helpful.

www.expedia.com has fairly detailed info on hotels and what’s around them.

For hotels within San Francisco under $100 per night - be sure to confirm that you’ll get a private bathroom. If you don’t mind a shared bath, find out its hours. Some of the less-lovely places don’t keep the hot water on 24 hours a day.

Also, be careful with hotels described as near Union Square. They may be in the Tenderloin, a neighborhood to the west of Union Square that’s not exactly nice and clean. ! ! ! !

My wife and I stayed at the San Remo Hotel on our honeymoon. You have to share a bathroom down the hall, but its reasonable, charming and near Fisherman’s Wharf and trolley and streetcar lines.

I would stay in one of the bedroom communities. I’ve stayed in Half Moon Bay, which is about 1/2 hour out of town. It’s on hwy 1 so it’s easy to get back into San Francisco. There are many motels in Half Moon Bay and you can stay for around $100. per night, maybe less.

Lombard & Divisadero- EconoLodge.

About $60/night. Private bath, clean beds, clean rooms. Good neighborhood, walking distance to tons of shops/ restaurants/ movie theaters (Union St. and Chestnut St.), and not too far from Fisherman’s Wharf & Pier 39. Not a mansion, but it does quite nicely, and is a great deal. Walgreen’s is across the street.

Last time I stayed I took http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/troymccluresf/newgallery/SanFrancisco/000_0543.JPG]this picture.

Bah.

I stayed at the Harbor Court Hotel and it was fantastic. I advise asking for a city/bridge view because the “garden” view is terrible.
