Guam and Spam???

What is the connection with the people of Guam and.... Spam? They love it. Clearly something happened to cause this. Can anyone explain it? Thank you so much!!!

Uh......ok. It's just that the Guamanians (or is that Guamians?) have such a fondness for it, I wondered how that happened. I know there are military bases there, and wondered if they got stuck with a lot of it or something. Sort of a "when you have lemons, make lemonade" kind of thing, maybe?

Hawaiians like Spam® a lot too!!

According to Hormel, Hawaii consumes the most Spam luncheon meat per capita, with residents eating a whopping 5.3 cans of Spam per person last year.

The Master says:
Quote:
The popularity of Spam among Pacific islanders can be readily explained by the scarcity and expense of other types of meat and the lack or unreliability of refrigeration. Fresh meat is stored primarily in a self-propelled biounit known as a pig, which is only slaughtered for major occasions. If you're looking for a spicy bit to have with your breadfruit you can't beat the convenience of Spam.

Cecil did an article about Spam, islanders, and whether it reminds them of their cannibalistic past. Pretty recently, too (last six months to a year or so). I would link to it if I could find it.
