It doesn't. I don't have an episode name/number, but I remember Geordi saying that he can see if something is "photonic" or not on the holodeck.

Justin_Bailey: People do quite difficult degrees at university purely on fiction. I'm not putting Star Trek up there with great literature, but there's nothing wrong with a question.
