mmmmm.... Frozen banana & your suggestions on what to eat on hot days...

It has been damn hot here today and very humid; the flying ants were out in force, so I've had to keep the windows nearly closed.

I consoled myself with a cold bath and a frozen banana - you just peel the banana, wrap it closely in cling film and freeze it - despite what some folks say, it doesn't go black, it just turns into a banana ice cream stick... Mmmmmm.

Looks like it is going to be damn hot again tomorrow too; if you have any cooling food ideas, please post them here.

Sorry, I had a visual. Funny.

As for me, I try to eat a lot of salad and drink water with lemon. Both are very refreshing.

BBQ! and plenty of liquids to go with it.

Forget fizzy drinks, they just make you more thirsty.

I am not a fan of ice-cold food (ice cream, lolies etc..) I don't have the teeth for them, so that pretty much leaves savoury - i.e. BBQ.

But food and hot days don't go well together - Drink is by far the priority. Water is perfect. A big bowl of pristeen water with the sun glistening off it, such a refreshing sight, even if you are not drinking it.

A couple of people on the board suggested frozen grapes, and they are really good.

I also tried frozen orange segments, and they're good, too. If you like grapefruit, frozen segments of that would probably work as well.

Yoplait has yogurt in tubes. Freeze them. Then eat. They are like creamy freezies.

Do it. Now!

You want hot? Come on down to my neck of the woods.
Watermelon and frozen yogurt - and don't forget the frozen margaritas..with a shot of high quality tequila floating on top. (Do not try this outside in the heat. Drive safely, etc.)

References to tequila in my post, and Chefguy's post may or may not be related to the fact that we live in the same town - and are driven to drink by the HEAT!

In the south, the Southern Hemisphere, and other warm places, people go for hot (heated) things like coffee, or hot (spicy) things like curries, gumbos, peppers, etc. Think this is because these foods make you sweat, and a slight breeze will feel cooling, or perhaps because your insides reach the same temperature as the outside. Whatever.

Personally, I go for frozen grapes, popsicles and beer slurpies (discovered by accident last summer when I left some in the freezer).

Fruit salad. Make up a massive bowl in the morning and just nibble away. Keep it in the fridge and have serves with toppings of yogurt or icecream or cream or cold custard.

Fruit salad should contain peaches, pineapple, pear, pitted cherries, orange segments, banana, apple, watermelon, rockmelon, strawberries, other berries of choice. Toss all the fresh ingredients in lemon juice first.

While I'm not much of a sugar freak, a monster slurpee can induce the correct number of marginal brain freezes to make life worth living once again.

I probably should mention that the cold bath was just after lunch and the frozen banana was in the evening and I just ate it, that's all.

Yes! Frozen grapes rock...especially after they thaw a bit and are slightly mushy but still frozen. Yum, grape slush...

And in the summer, I'm always a big fan of salads, frozen fruit, and exceedingly large amounts of water. (And, y'know, sunscreen and stuff. But while I did get some of the spray-on stuff in my mouth a few times over the past few summers, it's not for eating. Mostly because it tastes horrible.)

Hay Mangetout! Try this.

Well, you can imagine it gets very hot around here, and we have LOTS of cold goodies to eat BUT...

If you haven’t had a spontaneous orgasm lately, you need to make yourself a “Creme de Mamo”.

Get a very ripe papaya, scoop out the seeds, scoop the meat out of the skin and put in the blender, add 3-4 scoops of vanilla ice cream (a bit more ice cream then papaya), and a splash of whipping cream (just a splash to help liquefy the ice cream). Blend it up to the consistency of a thick milkshake. Pour it into a margarita glass or better yet a brandy snifter. Top it with a quick pour of Liquor of Cassis (if you cant find Cassis, use black berry or Raspberry Liquor). Eat with soup spoon. Die of rapturous delight.

Frozen grapes leave nothing to be desired.

But for a more substantial snack, here's what my mom would serve for dinner on those really hot days:
Cut a canteloupe (also works with honeydew or other firm melon) in half. Scoop out seeds. Fill the hole in the center of your canteloupe half with lime sherbert. Sublime!

I made a yummy pasta salad that I've been noshing on lately...

Celery, bell peppers, onion, tomatoes, broccoli, black olives, mozzarella cheese, rotini and grilled chicken, with italian dressing to blend. The salad is about 2/3 veggies and the dressing was fat-free, so I figure it's probably fairly healthy as well.

For something sweet - frozen blueberries rock!

this is probably going to sound gross (it did to me when one of my friends suggested it), but it's actually really good.

Slices of ice-cold cantaloupe with feta cheese (the really firm kind, not the kind that comes crumbled up).

The saltiness and strong flavor of the feta cheese really compliments the sweetness and mild flavor of the cantaloupe.

Actually, you can use lime or orange juice for tossing, too.

As for me, I cannot survive the Texas summer without lime slushes.
