When I logged on here this afternoon I saw a banner advertisement for an on-line trivia game.

Now as much as these advertisements can annoy me, and as much as I usually tune them out (the Chicago Reader ones are clearly on my mental "ignore" list), I am exceedingly pleased to see outside advertising here on the SDMB. Not for any inherent value to me of the advertising, mind you (though a quick jump to the trivia game showed it might be interesting), but because it means that the SDMB may become a revenue generator for the Chi Reader, rather than just a resource drain. With all of the fuss that has been happening here lately, anything that helps the SDMB become a stronger institution is welcome.

Keep up the good work guys.

-- Bill

(P.S. You may want to check out the links on some of the ads. One I clicked on took me to the Chi Reader movie page, rather than the trivia game.)

Yes, that's a real live PAID ad.

So please be sure to click on it and show these folks how much we appreciate them.

(I do, anyway; your response may vary.)

That is one strange trivia "game". I registered over there earlier, tried to find out exactly what the heck it is, answered a few questions, logged out, and now it tells me I'm not allowed to enter again for "more than 3 hours". Very strange. Strange, but interesting. The game requires you to post messages for the other players to read before allowing you to progress to new levels.

By the way, the difficulty level you start at is ridiculously easy. Here's a sample: Complete this phrase - _ A _ _ _ MAKES WASTE. I hope this isn't indicative of the type of the level of knowledge required.

Talk about appropriate demographics though...
Straight Dopers interested in trivia? Fish in the proverbial barrel.
I'm expecting to see the OED people's banner next week.

I still can't get into the trivia site. Every time I click the banner for the trivia site, I end up at the Reader's movie guide.

Hey, UncleBeer, I had the same problem. Then I went on this morning, went up a few levels, was forced to leave messages for other wizards, and then I ran out of manna. I can't go back until tomorrow. Do they think this will make people want to go back? I just don't get it.

BTW, what's the most often used vegetable?
I think the hint (IIRC) was _ _ _ O _
