Non U.S. Dopers: How'd ya get here?
That is to say, what brought you to these boards? This board seems to have quite the range of folks from all over the globe, which I find curious given the roots of this site - a Q & A column from a small Chicago newspaper. Is the Cecil column available in any way overseas? (aside from this site) Did ya ever see the TV show? Did ya pick up a copy of the book? Recommended by a friend? Surfed on in by accident?
Although in the US, I'll start it: I first started hanging around in the AOL days after a friend loaned me a copy of the book. Been hooked ever since. Grew up in Chicago, although I never heard of the Straight Dope until I lived in Wisconsin. So, how'd ya get here? (US dopers are certainly welcome to respond as well) |

By running a web search to find out how flies land on the ceiling. How else?
![]() I was linked to one of Cecil's columns. I explored the SD main site, and would return there every now and then, but it took me a couple of years to click on the "forums" link.

Last year I Googled for 'decimate'. This got me to the Word detective. One of his columns refered to Cecil. I read a few of his columns. On a fateful day I decided to see what that message board thingy was. And presto!

I never heard of anything related to Cecil´s column, the TV show, the books, the Chicago Reeder or whatever till I found this site. I think I was looking for something about Don McLean 8don´t ask why) and I stumbled upon Cecil´s column about the lyrics of "American Pie". I took a look at the site and said "whow!" and I´ve been aorund here since.
This site is quite instructive and entertaining, every time I pay a visit i learn something and I laugh into tears, what more could I ask for?

Fark. Not much of a plot and lacking in any dramatic tension, but it pretty much sums it up.

If it's not in your "location" column under your name, would you mind tellin' where you're at? I know that most non-merkin dopers seem to be from CA, UK and AU. I also know we have dopers in Saudi Arabia, Israel, Brazil, New Guinea, Chile ( I believe). Where else?

Google. I was looking for something and landed here. Read most of the columns in a week (hey, I gotta work) then read the faqs, then the newsw and finally clicked on the forums. Turns out it's the most enjoyable part of the site.
I'm from Mexico by the way. |

The Straight Dope was used as a cite on a dutch forum and something in Cecil's style hooked me, hooked me bad. After my initial five-hour archive extravaganza I started reading every single column, then threadspotting and after too much lurking I really, really needed the search function.

I floated here from another MB that I visited on occasion. Decided I liked this one better and hung around a bit, I only started reading the columns a few months into my time here on the boards. (Cecil Adams? Who's that guy?)

Wanted a funny birthday present for a girl I know <name withheld>, so naturally I think a hello kitty vibrator would fill the spot nicely
. An innocent google brought me to a pretty funny SDMB tread about some guy with a truck who picked up a girl with hello kitty panties or something. I’d been googled to SDMB before though, so I already knew it existed.Oh yeah here it is: http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/...+kitty+panties - Rune |

Looked up something obscure with google. I don't remember what, though.
Read the columns like a mad man, and then went on lurking here. Had to give my 2cents at a "great debate", so I registered. electrozion, Hamburg, Germany |

Like many others, for me it was a web-search (pre-Google) for something impossibly obscure, something I remember being near certain that no-one else in all the world would ever have stopped to wonder about.
Despite zero expectation of finding any pages at all, that search turned up Cecil's in-depth, definitive answer to whatever it was. (Unfortunately I too have forgotten what the subject was). Then I found the columns archive and with it the answers to dozens of the other things I thought no-one else ever thought about. I didn't get a whole lot of work done that day, and have been hooked ever since. |

Originally read the column in a free San Luis Opispo weekly when I was in college, but forgot about it totally when I graduated. After I settled several years later in Seattle, took a road trip with a local freind who started talking about the Straight Dope books, and then found one or two in a bookstore stop. After reading them, realized that I'd read some of the articles before (the "poisioned" aluminum foil article was the clincher). Later found this sight by way of the Jame Randi forum.

I knew of the straightdope site via my boss at a previous job in Ireland - it was on the "favourite links" of the corporate site, and I read a few columns.
However, it was yojimbo who told me about the message board. Incessantly for months. Then I registered. The rest is history. |

My husband said it was a good boredom-cure. Oddly enough though, he just lurked and never registered.
I'd never heard of the Chicago Reader, Cecil, death-rays of any style or vintage, etc before. I went straight to the forums, got hooked straight away, and made some (probably fatuous) first post within minutes. Oh, UK. |

Hi to my fellow Dutchies gum, Tusculan and Single Serving Friend from the movie Fight Club, right?
Years ago, I bought one of Cecils books, translated into Dutch (!), at a sale (unwanted, apparently ) and liked it. Two years ago, I Googled something, came out here, and immediatly bookmarked it in fond memory of the book. I searched the archive first. I hesitated to join the board because I thought I would have to get all technical doing so. Then I got drawn in through Threadspotting, read Wevets thread"odd little habits you have" and was hooked. I wish I found this place years ago. |

I was sent the link the the blimp story too, then spent the rest of the evening exploring the MB. After only ever going to British equestrian MB's that have more rules than you could shake a stick at, the SDMB was (and is) the bees knees!!
