I use Roadrunner cable (from Time Warner) in Cincinnati. I access via a wireless router (it’s a laptop with built in wireless). My father has Roadrunner (from Brighthouse, which used to be Time Warner) at his house in Florida. When I come down here, I suspected I should be able to just steal his connection for my laptop and get broadband access to the Net. No. So I called and talked to a second level support guy at Roadrunner. He told me I should be able to steal his connection, shut down my laptop, reboot (disconnect the power) to my dad’s cable modem, and gain access. No.
Any ideas on why this doesn’t work?
When you say ‘steal his connection’, are you talking about a cable? (as opposed to your normal wireless method).
If so, then it is possible that the ethernet network adaptor in your laptop is not configured properly or is disabled, either in Windows (I’m assuming you’re talking about a PC running Windows) or in the BIOS - it is not unusual for laptops to ship with various integrated peripherals turned off in the BIOS, as this conserves battery power in use.
Thanks Mangetout. I disabled the centrino mini wireless and it now allows me to get on with a direct connection, so there must have been a conflict in the two devices. Which is strange since the laptop came built that way, you’d think that they’d set up the devices to use different interrupts. Oh well. Now for some reason my machine’s trying to re-render all the graphics, which is causing it’s own set of problems. Don’t suppose those two are connected? (It’s probably something I tampered with trying to fix the problem in the first place)
