OK, this is the second week in a row that the Slug drawing in my free weekly has been completely different than the one on the SDMB homepage. (As a matter of fact, this week's homepage pic is incomparably more entertaining. Thanks, Slug!)
So what's the deal? Does Slug cook up two or three pix each week, give 'em to the weeklies and let them decide? Just curious...

So what did the picture in the paper look like?
When I saw the picture on the home page, all I could think is "So that's why Cecil's column only appears in the alternative press." |

I dunno about last week, but editors had their choice of Slug cartoons this week, a PG version and an R version. Your paper's editor obviously wasn't ready for the R version, whereas online we don't give a damn.

That I really must applaud. Way to tell off the man, Ed.

Olentzero-
Ok, so what was your VA picture of? Don't keep us in suspense. Do you suppose it appears online, too, somewhere?

Breckinshire,
When did you get promoted to Supreme Master of the Test Post.
Was there a party or something? All this time, I thought you were just the plain ole everyday Master of the Test Post. Jim |

It was on this forum lately. It was all he could talk about.
Search on Breckinshire and TubaDiva in the same thread. There's more than one amazing discussion. |

We need it
We should have a Slug gallery on the SD website, where we can see ALL of Slug's toons.

You CAN see lots of Slug pictures, if you know the dates of issues.
Here's some. Change the date at the end for more. http://www.straightdope.com/art/2000/000505.gif http://www.straightdope.com/art/2000/000428.gif http://www.straightdope.com/art/2000/000421.gif http://www.straightdope.com/art/2000/000414.gif A few weeks have multiple pictures, with A and B and C after the date. They're all in the archives. Right click on any picture you take a liking to. Make it your wallpaper. Martha Stewart won't find out.

Well purge me with hyssop and call me Deborah! I got a response from Ed! OK, it ain't Cecil but I sure as hell didn't suck up to get it
Ed - as regards last week, the homepage pic was Slug's version of a lesbian mom cradling a baby, stomping on The Facts. The Washington City Paper's version was a judge swinging his gavel at some poor schmo's head - said schmo was wearing nothing but a sandwich board upon which was written "5 Million Moms" or something like that and the judge was saying "Do the math!" I guess DC's gay and lesbian community might have taken offense to the lesbian mom cartoon, or at least the CP editors thought they would. This is the first time since I've been on the board, at least as far as I can remember, that the pictures in my weekly have differed from the homepage. Show_Biz I can't fully describe the picture I saw this week and do it justice, but the woman is standing up, fully clothed, a puddle at her feet. The scientist taking notes is still there, though. Not getting soaked. It may be in the Art archive, as annalamerino seems to assert.

Building on annalamerino's suggestion, here's this week's web illustration and here's the PG-13 version.

Let's start the petition!

I think what I really meant to say was: "I wish that we had a massive THUMBNAILED GALLERY on the SD/SDMB site, containing all of Slug's Straight Dope 'toons." So, there, I said it! Who will join this noble cause? |

Count me in. I know we can see everything Slug's done since 1994, but I do kinda want to see the whole Signorino canon... Slug? Ed? Unca Cece? What y'all say?
Speaking of which, you ever wonder why Slug doesn't post to the boards?...

Ok, now I've seen the "PG"-ish version.
Geez. Oh yeah, that's an improvement .I wouldn't be surprised if some paper just didn't run either. |

Perhaps, but...
Cecil and the Reader ain't selling the column to Highlights or the Weekly Reader here. You've got to remember that the purchasers of the column are alternative newspapers, and the readers of those papers like stuff that's a little over the top.
Heck, I can't read Cecil's column on the subway because of where it's placed in the New York Press, the local carrier. It's in the back, with the tranny and dominatrix ads. Slug's cartoon is the least controversial image on the page. |

That wacky Washington City Paper
I haven't seen the Washington City Paper this week, but I usually do look at News of the Weird, and they publish some pretty graphic toons in that column- way past R rated, in my opinion. It's hard to believe that the same paper would have objected to the R rated Slugtoon.

I'm also thinking the text of the article ain't so innocent either. One of the most baffling things I find about Maxim is that the text of the articles are pretty filthy but they'll blur pictures of bare breasts when they publish the magazine.
which leads me to conclude that the PG Slug cartoon is for the protection of the illiterate underage. I don't suppose there was a PG version of the actual article? (then again, this article could be considered tame compared to what else has been run) right now I'm not sure exactly what point I was trying to make, but I've already typed this so I may as well go ahead and post it

How often does Slug do a (relatively) bowdlerized version of his illustration? Who makes that decision that one is needed?

For the record...
The Baltimore City Paper used the same version as this website, vaginal spalshing in the face and all.

When we were on AOL, we had to occasionally edit the columns on the site to fit AOL's Terms of Service.
Some of the papers that publish The Straight Dope in syndication cens--I mean edit, EDIT to suit themselves and their own local standards. Now that we're in cyberspace on our own, what you read is what was published in the Reader. your humble TubaDiva Administrator
