Making Riddles for Kids

Anyhoo, my daughter's 7th b-day party is this Sunday and it's a Scooby-Doo mystery theme. So I'm hiding the cake, splitting the kids into two groups and having them solve riddles with one word answers, then they'll take the first letter of each answer and use that to solve a final riddle and then they'll have the location of the cake.

So. This is what I've come up with. Any other suggestions for the riddles? I was trying to make them somewhat funny and fairly easy, but not too easy. These are all 6 / 7 year old girls.

The food idea comes from the fact that Scooby and Shaggy eat all the time and that there is food missing. Any other food suggestions that would be commonly known that start with the appropriate letter would be appreciated.

I might have a bowl on each groups' table with one of each item as clues.

Scooby-Doo Team

Llollipop I am round and sweet. To show how much they like me, people lick me until I disappear. What am I?

Oonion Peel my skin and I won’t cry but you will. What am I?

Bbroccoli If you’re feeling imaginative at dinner, you can pretend I am a little green tree. What am I?

Bblueberry A roly-poly fruit that is often used in muffins, pancakes and pie. If you eat a lot of me your teeth will turn blue. What am I?

Shaggy Team

Y - yogurt I am very healthy. I’ll help you grow strong bones. You can put a spoon in me or some people make me drinkable. Yo man, what am I?

Ddoughnut I am round and tasty. If you pick up two of me you can pretend you have binoculars. What am I?

Eegg Be careful! If you drop me there’ll be a big yellowy, gooey mess! I taste yummy with breakfast although you have to break me to cook me. What am I?

Sstrawberry My name is a little funny because it reminds you of a house made by the first little pig. I’m also a delicious flavor of ice cream. What am I?

Kkiwi If you kiss me before you peel me, you won’t be pleased. Cut me open and you will be able to eat all my yummy green insides. What am I?

Final Riddle (both teams solve together):

When you get on an elevator you’ll see this button. It will have a letter instead of a number. The letter is the 12th letter of the alphabet. If you press this button, where will it take you?

I think it's cute and sounds like a lot of fun! If you weren't already planning on doing this, I think that along with the clue, you should make it obvious how many letters are in the word, like

I am round and sweet. To show how much they like me, people lick me until I disappear. What am I?

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

It'll keep them from going down the wrong path (I probably would have said sucker on that one, but if I saw it had the wrong number of letters, I would know it wasn't right). Of course, the girls are very young so maybe it won't help much, but even if they don't know how to spell the words, showing how many letters there are will at least clue them in to if it's a long word or a short word.

Yogurt might be a bit tricky to figure out - maybe you could add to the clue If you freeze me, I make a great summer treat.

Otherwise I think you're in great shape, and the girls will have a ton of fun

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Grasshopper.

I thought about doing the _ _ _ _ _ for each word, but I don't really want them to focus too much on spelling the words correctly, all they really need is the first letter of each to solve the mystery. That's why I was thinking of putting one of each item (or maybe a picture of each item) beside the paper the clues would be written on.

I know yogurt is a little tough, but the only other food I could think of would be yam, and I don't think that would be as familiar to the kids. Any other ideas?

Yeah, I can understand how they would get too hung up on spellings. I can hear it already, "I think it's brockalee, but it doesn't fit!"

I think the yogurt one will be okay if you hint at frozen yogurt, and especially with the Yo clue. Also, I don't think they'll have any trouble with strawberry, but it would be fun to put a picture of Strawberry Shortcake with the clue. Hooray for '80s toys coming back!

Good luck.
