Well, since they are more or less within the complete contol of the Crawford Cabal, and can therefore reliably be expected to be set at the level most tending to tilt to a Bush victory,
Query:
What will the color be at 12:01 AM on Election Day?
(without prejudice to my major premise that:[foilon]there will not be an election[foiloff])
I say red also but not declared till, maybe, ten thirty pm on monday night, so there’s max effect and no time to deconstruct the bona fides of the info.
Probably yellow, maybe orange if there’s some incident. IIRC, it’s always been either yellow or orange since the alert system started. I really don’t see them raising it to red, just for political purposes, or really for anything short of a terrorist attack on US soil. A red alert is just too disruptive.
I don’t think it’s neccesarily true that just because the government sets the threat levels, the administration is going to manipulate them to help victory. That would be unbelievably crass.
Given what happened in Madrid, my personal one will be on red. I’ve already scoped out a route to work which takes me around the major stations on the subway, just in case. Did that shortly after the Madrid bombings.
It’s an amazing thing to read the world news and have to change your routine based on it. A very odd feeling.
NYC and probably DC have both been on orange or the equivalent since 9/11 anyway, BTW. Could be that other major cities will go on orange anyway as we get close to election time.
I bet that whatever the color come election time, conspiracy theorists will have a field day with it.
Red? Obviously trying to scare people into not going to the polls. Of course, this implies that those going to vote for GW are made of sterner stuff, and will head out into red alert levels to vote, while the Nader supporters will be properly cowed, and will stay at home. (It is presumed that Kerry supporters will vote for Buchanan.)
Green? Obviously the administration knows that a terror plot is in progress, and wants it to kill as many unsuspecting people as possible. Because as we all know, Mohammadans killing Americans will magically equal votes for Bush. Somehow.
Or how about: The terror advisory level will reflect what information the DHS has at the time?
Like, so disruptive , they can’t actually HAVE an election…
And a “terrorist attack”, or the “chatter” of one, was just what I envisioned fof Monday night before the election, assuming the polls continue to tank for W.
My bet is on…business as usual. So, whatever is the ‘normal’ color (yellow? Orange?), that will be the color of the day. Perhaps they will raise it a notch BECAUSE of what happened in Madrid (would be prudent :)), but I don’t think it will be politically oriented as much as from a deep seated need by Government types to CYA.
I also predict…no terrorist attack on election day. Nor do I think there will be a terrorist attack in the US between now and election day. I predict many such attacks in Iraq though (not necessarily ‘terrorist’, but insurgent oriented…ya, I know…some ‘prediction’).
I don’t like Bush, and really think he’s a good president, but it takes a lot more than that to convince me he’s trying to pull off some sort of internal coup. Do you have any evidence that he’s actually trying to cancel elections, something that hasn’t been done since the beginning of the country, in spite of depressions, wars, civil war, and other presidents I’ve disliked, or do you just dislike Bush so much that you’re willing to believe the worst things about him without evidence?
Whatever it is right now (three levels below the top, I think) unless there is an actual terror incident in the US before then. In that case, it’ll be one level higher.

I think we will reach Ernie level by election time, Notice that the Oscar and Cookie Monster levels have never appeared?
Neither the president nor DHS has the authority to unilaterally halt elections. Elections are controlled at the state level in a manner prescribed by the Constitution. The president COULD try to persuade all 50 governors to agree not to hold elections, and he COULD try to persuade all 50 state legislators not to appoint a slate of electors in the absence of a vote, and he COULD try to persuade those electors not to cast their votes when the Congress re-convenes in January, but even if he did all that he’d have to leave office on January 21st and the President pro Tem of the Senate would assume the office until a suitable successor was sworn in.
Unless, due to some major terrorist incident, he declared martial law, shut down all business and restricted everyone to their house until further notice. Talk about one hell of a stock market crash. :D. Nah, he wouldn’t try that, would he???
Again, that would require the consent of the state governments to enforce. Such an edict would have to be enforced by local police departments and the National Guard, as the military is barred by the Posse Comitatus Act from engaging in civilian law enforcement.
And I have a feeling that shutting down “all business” would cause a lot more trouble than a major terrorist incident ever could. People need to eat and have heat and water in their homes, you know.
Also, assuming the President does say “The hell with Posse Comitatus. I’m sending in the army and acting as dictator.” Why do you assume they’d do it? We don’t have an army of robots. We’ve got people in the army, who were raised with the same sort of values as people not in the army, and one of the core values of our armed forces, and our country as a whole, have is that the military should be under civilian control, not the other way around.
Further, if by some strange reason, the military does agree to it (the President uses his hypnobeam to mesmerize them), do you know how many soldiers something like that would take? It seems like it would be a lot more than we have.
