Email Campaigns On The Board

We recently removed a thread from the board concerning a teacher in New Jersey involved in some controversy over posting a picture of the current president of the United States in the classroom.

But that’s not why the thread was removed; we discuss all sorts of topics here on the board, some of them involving politics and some of them getting quite heated. Usually it doesn’t matter, as long as you stay reasonably civil.

A couple of posters in the thread went so far as to investigate the situation on their own and post email addresses of the school board and faculty involved in the situation, inviting people to write them, call them, yell at them.

That’s the problem.

It’s great that you feel motivated enough to want to put your own two cents in on the situation. It’s a semi-free country, even; it’s your right. However, we don’t want you doing it on the board.

We do sometimes allow email or website campaigns, usually in charitable causes. However, the OP must get permission in advance.

[NOTE: Formal warning previously here now removed. Sent email.]

Wow, a warning in a sticky. Two of them, even. How often does that happen?

So infrequently that it did not happen.

::cue Twilight Zone music::

If I said there was a charity called SendAllChocolatetoTuba, would I get in trouble?
I hope not.

Could I get a bit more clarification? I understand that we do not want to post contact information for private citizens, but could you explain the reasoning behind not posting contact information for public officials? If I wanted to post the contact information for my local representative, can I do that, or do I have to post the link to the search page and let people find it themselves?

Thanks for explaining further.

Very funny.

Candy is dandy, but large unmarked bills in five-pound boxes would be even better. Don’t be afraid to dream big.

Just kidding, of course. Dangit.

Most people use links in their posts here and there’s no problem with it.

What we want to avoid (like in the case Ivylass cited) is where people come to the board with something in mind that ultimately has nothing to do with the board community except to get them to DO something, in this case, harass public officials over what was perceived to be poor judgement.

This is no reflection on the original poster in the thread that was removed; she simply stated a situation and other people ran off with it in the process of discussing it.

It’s similar to our prohibition against links for commercial purposes. We do sometimes allow people to link for such purposes, but the reason needs to be a good one and they need to clear it ahead of posting it.

Remember, if you’re in doubt about a situation, you’re invited to drop any of us an email on the situation before you put it on the board. We’re happy to get your emails and appreciate you asking ahead of time. It’s always better to ask permission than forgiveness.

So no “Call to Action” posts?

Got it. Thanks!

I have a feeling I might have been involved in this situation. I’ve been away from the boards and entirely missed the warning. Also, my email address has changed, so I didn’t get an emailed warning if indeed this is the incident I think it was.

My deepest apologies for any part I may have played in this incident; it won’t happen again.

So delete the thread and DON’T start a fucking sticky thread about it… huh Tuba?

Or are you just an attention whore? …

GRRRRRRRRRR! You ****** *****! Then LOCK this fucking thread… instead of letting it OPEN for a YEAR! Bitch!

I have no idea what your thought process was this morning, if6was9, when you decided to come into a year-old sticky and insult Tuba; one would think that if you really wanted to complain about the sticky, you would have, oh, Pitted it back when it was first, you know, stuck. Nor am I sure why you thought it was okay to attack another poster (regardless of her status at the SDMB) outside the Pit.

Whatever the reason, though (drink, brain melted, etc…), don’t do it again. If you just have to vent your feelings about a non-issue, do it in the Pit. You’ve been warned.

In the meantime, this thread will remained unlocked because people are welcome to politely comment about the decision if they have a question, point of clarification, or whatnot.

WOW!! my first time to visit this board and I’m scared with the warning:)…truth to tell, if anybody whether public official or private citizen has done something wrong or has violated a policy, rules and regulations or ccommitted a crime, it is not for us to call and yell at them…what we should do is report them to the proper authorities so legal actions can be done…

my question to the admin, is it ok if I post and share a site here for jobseekers?..just want to share with everyone the site where I found a telecommute job…I know lots of people are looking for a job nowadays and it is really very hard with the slugging economy and I don’t mean just one place or country but globally…

also, what do you mean by sticky issues??..hehehe I may be a hitechmama but there are still somethings which I am quite lowtech :smack: …thanks everyone:)

regards,
hitechmama
